Sonic Lost World is my favourite modern Sonic game, but that's mostly because it doesn't even try to be a Sonic game. I'd say that's better than trying to replicate what made Sonic so great and failing.

Celeste is one of my favourite indie games gameplay-wise, but the plot feels very unsubtle to me. I'm not against platformers having plots, or even emotional plots for that matter - but Celeste feels super pretentious.

Then again, if it helped people get through hard times like I've heard, it was all worth it. Plus I can't really judge since most times I try to conceptualise a story or character I usually put in a little too many emotional beats.

I find the appeal of Geno really hard to understand. He's a wooden puppet with a gun for a hand who's possessed by a star. An original and interesting concept, don't get me wrong, but even when compared to other Mario RPG characters he's not that unique. A cloud who can control the weather and was raised by frogs, a transgender witch-ghost with fire hands, a narcissistic but heroic warrior made of beans, deranged rabbit versions of existing characters - I can see why people like ol' Howdy Doody over there, but I don't get why he's so popular.

Turns out chess is basically the Smash Bros. of real life sports - takes equally as much effort and passion, is equally as intense to watch, but people just don't take it seriously because of gameplay differences. I never knew about the "is chess a sport?" debate and just assumed it has a competitive scene, therefore it's a sport - which I still stand by.

In the UK we never had the classic Christmas movies like Charlie Brown and Rudolph - we just watch a bunch of random animated movies that have nothing to with Christmas.

People often say you need conflict to tell a good story and I feel that's kinda true to an extent, but if you've got good enough characters and write them well enough, anything can be entertaining - even going to the store to buy some milk or hell, watching paint dry! - but you probably would need to get the reader/viewer/listener invested in the characters first (hence why "fluff" generally works better as fanfiction or one-off episodes of TV shows) and would need characters more fit for mundane situations.

I feel memes like this that I loved when I was 15 or so has not only impacted my sense of humour, but also my sense of story telling.

Me and a friend write fanfiction AUs together, and his ideas are all normal things like "what if this character was the opposite gender?" "what if this character was that character's sibling?" "what if this character went through the adventures that character went through?" and mine are always like "WHAT IF THIS CHARACTER WAS A LIVING FOOD PERSON FROM A LIVING FOOD SOCIETY WHERE EATING ONE ANOTHER IS CONSIDERED NORMAL AND ACCEPTABLE BECAUSE THEY CAN ALL REGENERATE AND THEY HAVE PEOPLE RESTAURANTS" or "WHAT IF THIS CHARACTER LIVED IN A WORLD WHERE BEING GROTESQUELY OBESE IS HEALTHY AND THE NORM AND THEY'RE THE SIZE OF 3 PEOPLE FROM OUR WORLD STACKED ATOP EACH OTHER."

One thing I've been saying for years is that Nintendo should release their legacy games on rival platforms. Nobody's gonna buy a Switch (Online Membership) just to play retro games, but Steam or PS4 ports of tried and true classics like Yoshi's Island or Ocarina of Time could make Nintendo millions.
