  • I have this false memory of Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue getting a unique startup on the original Xbox as to not scare young children. Turns out that was never a thing. I wonder what that idea came from... I was probalby getting confused with a Signapore-exclusive limited edition Hello Kitty Xbox.
People are saying the new Battletoads is kiddy as if an 80s TMNT rip-off where the animals turn their arms into drills isn't already kiddy.

    KirbyWorshipper2465
To be fair, the arcade game allowed you to drill enemies to the point of bleeding and decapitate Karnak, so.

It's kind of like going from 2003 Turtles to Rise of the TMNT, but with even busier visuals. Seriously, it's difficult to follow the action in the new Battletoads. At least people liked the animation in RoTTMNT, so I'm honestly not sure if that would be enough here.

From what I've seen the ones who are giving the new Battletoads real criticism are mostly talking about how, as a Battletoads game, pretty much lost it's 90's edge and aesthetic. The art-style and character designs have also dropped in quality in comparison to previous Battletoads appearances, which may be intentional because it looks like the devs are aiming for a younger target audience.

If this is the case then it's fine to make a different iteration of Battletoads. But why does it have to look so ugly?
The thing about modern Jim Henson shows is that they're animated as if they were using puppets. Sid the Science Kid's movements look very surreal and sporadic due to a lack of squash-and-stretch and a lot of over-acting, while his design is somewhat unnerving with the strange colours, but had he been a puppet with real human physics weighing him down, facial expressions that only change when they absolutely need to, and a furry texture he'd probably be really charming
I think Smash should be just as much about bringing attention to the little guys as it is about celebrating the big franchises.
Oh my god, why aren't people nostalgic for Despicable Me yet. I'm 18 now, I want to feel old in a way other than YouTube giving me constant Manscaped ads.
    Shadow drops > Directs.

Had Origami King been revealed in the Direct Mini alongside the ARMS rep, nobody would've been talking about it at all. The Cadence of Hyrule DLC reveal probably would've been bigger news too had it been shadow dropped.

Case in point, I heard that the reveal for that and Pikmin 3 had gotten a really good amount of buzz simply for showing up by themselves. Hell, even the president considered just dropping the Direct format entirely for a different method of news distribution.

Otherwise, it's always just the same old habit of people expecting things that were never promised. Why would people bother to watch Directs if they'll never be satisfied with their content anyway? Reaction videos? Reaction vids are just as valid for shadow drops (Arlo had one for Pikmin 3).

Also, I find it odd how the Cadence DLC wasn't saved for Nindies World.

I think the reason people like directs is because they're constantly getting fed tons of info non-stop, but to me that's the reason I dislike Directs - most people aren't fans of all types of games, so you'll either wake up at an absurd hour to see a ton of anime fantasy games you don't care about, or a ton of furry platformers you don't care about - shadow drops work much better since you don't have to wait through a trailer for something you don't care about to see the stuff you do care about, instead you log on to your gaming news site, see - for example - "Mole Mania 2 confirmed!", and if you like Mole Mania or puzzles you watch the trailer, and if you're not a fan or familiar, you just move on and wait for something you do care about.
Tried to make a Smash roster with 90 fighters and 9 echoes. I learned an important lesson making this: less is more.

Damn solid roster, I've always loved your tastes in video games and this is clear evidence of that!
Personal favorites are Krad, Mini Kangaroo and Bubsy

Truth be told all 3 of those I probably wouldn't include if I weren't trying to make a 99-character roster - I've actually never played a Metroid game, at least at length, in fact most of these characters I have no particular attachment to and simply included because what little I know of them makes them sound like good Smash material.

    I know!
I enjoy them because they make your personal picks really stand out. Muddy Mole and Space Invader wouldn’t really be special in a roster full of characters like them now would they?
Mii Brawler basically has a perfect Muddy Mole moveset with the Suplex and Shot Putt, I really wish they'd release a Muddy Mii costume. The proportions and size would be off, sure, but it'd be better than nothing.
I just got a YouTube ad with steak in it, like actual cow steak. It's such a surreal experience seeing meat in an advert in 2020.

Personally I don't care where my food comes from, how it was made or what it's made of - if it tastes good it tastes good, end of. I don't get why people would build their entire identity around not eating animals. You're not a long-oppressed minority, you're not making social change - you're just not eating certain types of food.

It's more about a moral choice. Animals of any kind are living beings and eating them means ending their lives. The types that sidestep that choice by saying things like "They're just animals" are running away from that choice, in the same way that people who endlessly bicker over the status of a fetus or religious objection are running from the moral choice abortion is. Some people do adopt those movements as identities, but ultimately they should be about putting those conversations back into focus: whether or not the benefits outweigh the potential moral costs.

Though setting aside whether or not eating meat should be done; there is an important discussion that needs to be had over the horror show that is factory farming. You can still eat meat without the horrors that factory farming produces and enacting an intense amount of suffering in the name of profit.

I actually have a Gizmondo and they feel like rubbery licorice. I have no games for it because the prices are absurd just look them up.
Me and a Discord friend were talking about how the Ghosts would play in Smash.

They'd function similar to a mix of Shulk and PKMN Trainer - basically imagine if you could swap between Mario and Doc mid-match, they change stats, moves don't change animation-wise or general concept-wise but do have different functionality.

Blinky (red) would the powerhouse by process of elimination, Pinky is the speedster given her ambush tactic in the original Pac-Man, Inky (blue) is the all-arounder given how his AI shifts between the other ghosts' AI, while Clyde (orange) is the heaviest with the biggest shield given his habit of running away from Pac-Man

They'd have a long laggy animation for switching (they turn into TURN-TO-BLUE, then become the next ghost) - when they're in TURN-TO-BLUE form they're super vulnerable, which makes them launch far if hit (I'm not sure yet if that's in the "broken Jigglypuff shield" way or "hit by a golden hammer" way)

Given that colours are the only real way of identifying the ghosts, they'd be the same colours for all alts.
    BonafideFella
    BonafideFella
The Ghosts gotta be what I call “predator” characters
Leading you into a specific corner, cutting off all escape before lambasting you with stronger attacks. The other half to what PAC~MAN is at heart, the freedom of options slowly being cut down in hot pursuit.
One game I'm surprised nobody is making an indie spiritual successor to is Pac-Man 2. its strange concept would be much more warmly received nowadays.
    KirbyWorshipper2465
    KirbyWorshipper2465
It's very oddly specific, in fairness. As in, they'd need to go out of their way to even know of it (which isn't surprising, since the only thing Pac-Man is even remembered for in the general public consciousness is running around in mazes).
If you ever just wake up one day and think "gee, I sure don't feel anxious enough today", look up Kuru Kuru Kururin speedruns.
If I have to see that air pollution ad where the woman screams about nothing and that somehow gets rid of the air pollution one more time...
Sorry to rant, but I need to vent this:

If you think AT promotions should be free or discounted DLC because they're "aLrEaDy In ThE gAmE", you have NO CLUE how game design works. The SSBU DLC characters are ALREADY absurdly cheap for what they're worth, and just because a character already has a model and a couple of animation doesn't mean that it'll be cheap or easy to make:

    a higher poly model
    balancing
    extra animations
    a stage
    coding
    a moveset
    a trailer
extra models for projectiles and cameos
    music remixes

    and COUNTLESS other things.

It’s still special treatment for for something that’s ALREADY IN THE ****ING GAME. All that other stuff I‘m okay with, but it’s still rewarding of shameless paywalling for a character who was given the AT role in the first place.

But fine. Whatever. Happily shell out $6 for a character who was already programmed for an assistant role, only to have their playability locked behind a paywall.
    BonafideFella
    BonafideFella
Quite frankly, you said it best
They were programmed for a assist role, not a fighter role, I’d imagine it’d take considerably more time and effort and a completely different approach to make them a playable character.
The only things the assist and character would share is the character. Everything would have to be rebuilt.
    Wario Wario Wario
    Wario Wario Wario
It is NOT paywalling. Paywalling refers to intrusive MTX, such as those you see in mobile games, a good example would be "The Simpsons: Tapped Out", OK - but let's assume "paywalling" just means paying for someone or something already in the game. Let's say Waluigi got in, if you were paying to be able to control the AT with JUST the kick attack, that'd be what you consider "paywalling", not a fully fleshed out playable Waluigi with a balanced, fully coded and animated moveset that actual work was put into - there's more to a character being in Smash than just "hey look! insert character here is in Smash!"
You know, I think obscure Mario characters have a good future:

    K. Rool in Smash was HUGE. It'll be a moment in Nintendo history which cannot be overstated, that probably lit something or other inside Nintendo's walls, considering that a year or two after K. Rool came aboard, mobile Mario spin-offs started embracing lesser known characters - we saw Baby Wario from Yoshi's Island DS get his PHD, King Bob-Omb; Nabbit; and Dixie Kong took to the tracks, Goomba got its third playable role, even the dolphins got in on the fun.

Now, you could mention the Origami King interviews, but considering how long game development took that probably started development around the time of K. Rool's reveal, before they knew there was a demand for classic characters to come back. Remember that Sakurai said he had no clue fans wanted K. Rool until the ballot.

KirbyWorshipper2465 KirbyWorshipper2465 I think the safest bet for a Mario spin-off character to put in a Mario game, specifically Kart, would be either K. Rool or Ashley. Their popularity is one thing, but it's also that someone unfamiliar with the extended Mario universe can take a quick glance at these characters and tell exactly what they're all about - K. Rool is clearly a greedy yet goofy tyrant, while Ashley is clearly a moody pre-teen witch. You could add them to a Mario Kart game and casual fans wouldn't think much of them. Character design goes a long way for a series like Mario.
    KirbyWorshipper2465
    KirbyWorshipper2465
In regards to Ashley, her situation is peculiar; other Nintendo divisions have been so hesitant to use characters made by the WarioWare staff that she showed up in Badge Arcade, the title screen for a tank game, and literally nothing else besides the usual Smash cameos. We really don't know if or when they'll take that first step, especially since we don't know if WW is getting something on Switch.

    K. Rool is increasingly looking like a shoo-in for sure, since DK already has established presence in Mario spin-off stuff.

I get what you're saying, but I don't completely agree. I feel that there is like a split between Mario Games, with some games having the extremely limited cast (2D Mario Games & Paper Mario with Yoshi, Jr., Koopalings, lots of Toads etc), a few getting more leeway (Sports, Kart, Party with Wario, DK, Rosalina etc.)) and then a few characters that would be lucky if they got a trophy/spirit (Paper or M&L originals, characters from DKC/Warioware with the sole exception of Kremlings/K Rool Strikers/Super Sluggers)
Remember when people genuinely believed Poochy and Adeleine would be DLC? I'd happy with either of those 2 but there's no denying that's pretty bottom-of-the-barrel for a series that doesn't even have Waluigi yet.

Basically, yeah. Him showing up in a Koizumi-made Mario game is a bit of a big deal.

Even if he isn't playable this time, we're starting to run out of major Mario characters to add as fighters in Smash, so he'd be a logical addition for one of the next choices. Not to mention that recent Yoshi games had him featured in promos and the box art.
    Mamboo07

Agree, Yoshi hasn't gotten a newcomer for years. (Same as Wario.)
People joke about anti-vaxxers/anti-maskers also being anti-seat belt, but funnily enough I've actually met someone IRL who thought he was too good a driver to wear a seat belt.

He was a taxi driver, I don't know if he still is, but I doubt it.
I started maining Mii Brawler for the memes - you know, jump into quickplay and embarrass some kids by beatin' them up with Garfield, Squidward's House, The Noid, or 7 Grand Dad - but I kept maining Mii Brawler for counter throw. Let me tell you, some moves are just made to be countered. DK's F-Smash, Falcon Punch and Mario Fair are some of my favourite counter targets.
I feel the reason a lot of people find Crash games "Dark Souls hard" is because they play them as if they're 2D Mario games. Despite appearing derivative at first sight, Crash games are about precision where Mario games are about exploration. They're the very definition of "linear", which is their strong point IMO. A Crash collectathon makes about as much sense as a Banjo corridor game.
I'd say refusing to use a character for not being "relevant" is more out-of-touch with younger generations than adding a forgotten character.

The internet has been readily accessible to consumers for almost 4 decades now, meticulous fan wikis get tens of thousands of visitors every day and retro games are in fashion with younger generations. Kids know who characters like K. Rool and Geno are, even more so now than when he was first introduced in the case of the latter.

Hell, those who aren't familiar with such characters will still appreciate them - you don't need the full backstory and lore to confidently say "I will play as the fat crocodile king this round".

(I should note I'm refering to any sort of multiplayer game that uses existing characters, not just Smash)
I'm not a Kirby fan so I may be missing out on something, but honestly a generic Waddle Dee sounds way more enticing as a newcomer than Bandanna Waddle Dee - they have bows, axes, balloons, swing ropes, missile launchers, cars, snowballs and parasols - why limit them to just a spear?
    Pokelego999
    Pokelego999
Cause Bandana is a separate character. A main character. He is a sort of leader to the Waddle Dees. Adding a regular Dee would make no sense, as Bandana is a main character. Bandana could also pull those things out of his arsenal too, theres nothing stopping him.
Question: if Goku and SpongeBob ACTUALLY got in Smash, be it as Mii Costumes or proper fighters, would y'all still accept them as additions to the roster? honestly I'd be 100% cool with it, through it obviously won't happen and isn't worth campaigning for in the slightest.

I'm still of the mindset that smash needs to include only characters who's origin's have been from videogames. I know some will try to point out rob or lucario, but both those characters despite not "technically" appearing as game characters first, were designed with a video game in mind. Lucario was another pokemon, who happened to just make his big debut in the cartoon first. ROB was a toy designed purely for the purpose of being used with a video game. (this also means any of those "toys to life" characters like from SKylanders could technically be on the table...)

But more importantly those 2 characters are also first party. And nintendo can do whatever they want with those. But if it's 3rd party, then it really needs to stick to the video game characters only rule, whether for costumes, or actually playable.

But...this is also sakurai and he's shown time and time again that he'll do w/e the hell he wants, so if Spongebob, Shrek, Goku, or any other meme non-video game character got in, there's not much any of us could ever do about it anyway.

    ...

You know what? so long as Geno Gets in I really don't care anymore tbh...
One of the game concepts I'm working on I want to be a 90s cartoon throwback in the same way Cuphead is a 30s throwback - that includes "limiting" the game to 4:3 30FPS on even the most powerful of PCs, and using that as a selling point. I want this to be a "CRT gaming" sort of game.

pretty sure games in the 90s were still 60fps.
No sentence makes me more immersed in a fantasy steampunk world more than "Now available on Steam and PlayStation Store, rated T for Teen."
After years, I finally realised why they call it "Doug's First Movie" despite there being no "Doug's Second Movie" - because Doug was airing on Disney's 1 Saturday Morning at the time, it was a sneaky way of forcing name recognition!
To this day it confuses me that Palutena was revealed at E3 but that same year Pac-Man was revealed behind closed doors. You'd think the more niche character would be the closed doors reveal and the only video game character who rivals Mario in popularity would be their big E3 reveal.
I like how the fish from Balloon Fight being on the Summit stage implies a Black Box shared universe.
A remake of Simpsons: Hit and Run should be called "The Simpsons: Hit & Run: Reran" - the game's got "run" in the title, and it's based on a show with millions of episodes and known for commenting on the media. It's perfect.
I think it's awful to celebrate death, it could be a mass puppy-corpse-rapist and it'd still be a tragedy, that being said...

"Anti-masker dies of COVID-19" just feels satisfyingly karmic. Sometimes I disgust myself.
The "Daisy is a recolour" argument is super weird to me considering Luigi is basically the same - in fact, if anything Daisy has more distinct traits from Peach compared to Luigi to Mario, both design and personality wise.
