  • I do have to admit, a lot of us are hyping up Sonic Racing Crossworlds as being cheaper, but it does have a Digital Deluxe Edition, so if the base game is $60 and DX is $20 dollars more, a lot of us would be paying $80 anyway. Sega hasn’t actually announced the pricing yet, though, so I’m merely spectating.

(Although, it does have the advantage for me of not needing to buy a new console since I already have a good PC, plus PC doesn’t require a $20 subscription for online.)
Anyway, when’s Sonic Racing Crossworlds news?

We know for a fact that there’s stuff in that game that Sega hasn’t shown off yet. They’ve only revealed about 1/3 of the tracks that the website claims there are, they haven’t yet properly explained how Extreme Gear (hoverboard) vehicles work (although whether or not there’s actually anything functionally unique about them besides stats and character animations is yet to be seen,) and they haven’t shown all of the content included in the Digital Deluxe version yet either.
Now I’m thinking about how much returning content Kirby Air Riders in general will have.

What if… it brought nearly everything back? There‘s 16 tracks (a standard amount of tracks for a Mario Kart game to bring back, plus the fact that 7 of these are Top Ride tracks that are tiny), 20 vehicles for Kirby across all modes, 2 alternative characters, 1 moderately big city map, and ~13 (?) small areas for City Trial’s Stadiums.

I don’t know how much staff they’re devoting to it, but, if it is notably higher budget than the original (it has a fancy CGI teaser after all,) it doesn’t seem impossible that most of the original stuff could return alongside a similar amount of new stuff. Or it could be all new stuff and they’ll put the original game on NSO. I’m excited to learn anything about the game beyond the trailer, really (although I don’t expect much info about it until after MKW’s release.)
I wonder if Top Ride is returning in Kirby Air Riders. Like… Air Ride is the obvious mode that must be included, and City Trial is such a colossal part of the original game’s identity that it‘d be incredibly weird if it didn’t return, but Top Ride feels like it is just kinda there, you know?

It‘d be neat if Top Ride gained vehicles to choose from beyond just the two control schemes.
Wouldn’t it make more sense for powerscaling debates to use the median power level of a character, instead of their highest feats? Like, if you list every instance of a character and rank them in order of power, you should use the one in the exact middle, to eliminate the influence of outliers.
Although I’m really just sick and tired of characters’ greatest feats being brought up again and again and again, instead of thinking about how a “standard” fight would go.
Don’t mind me, I’m just continuing to be frustrated that Sonic Rumble keeps running events that begin and end before the global launch (May 8th.) Like maybe I wanted to play as AiAi and MeeMee and Opa Opa?? Nope, sucks to be me I guess.

What's sega's own personal track record with this stuff?

Wouldn't surprise me if a rerun, if ever, takes place in like... several years or so. Which sucks.

MartianSnake MartianSnake I’m not an expert on Sonic mobile games so I might be totally wrong, but other relevant Sonic mobile games (like Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces Speed Battle) haven’t actually had crossovers quite like this, so it’s hard to say.

Sonic Dash did have an Angry Birds collab a long time ago (well before Sega bought Rovio) that I don’t think has returned, but I don’t think that’s the same thing as this.

A lot of other event skins (that don’t involve third parties, such as the Paramount movie skins and LEGO skins) in both Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces Speed Battle do return from time to time, though, and all of the crossover characters shown so far here in Rumble are clearly owned by Sega, so they might return eventually. I just want some confirmation from the devs or Sega, though…
Can we get Formee from Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive! in Smash as a create-a-character? We’d have every character ever in Smash, even if they have to be weird wobbly 2D representations with elastic limbs. Like, it’d be the next Miitopia-face-paint, it’d go crazy.

In case you’ve never played that, you really can make pretty much anything you can think of (as long as you can figure out how to build it out of 20 or fewer premade shapes stuck together.) And, no matter the proportions of what you came up with or the specific quantity of limbs you chose to give it, the animations are procedural, so it’ll automatically work out.
I’m imagining if the new Tomodachi Life were to get a freeroam mode, where you can wander around the island on foot to watch the Miis do stuff (as opposed to the disembodied flying camera you usually have.) Although, it’d have to be first person only since the player in Tomodachi Life games is never seen aside from their hands and arms.

And then, I realized it’d be the most LEGO Island 1 thing in ages. Just walking around a weird island in first person watching weird people do weird things. If this does end up being a thing, I’ll have to try playing the Lego Island OST in the background to soak up all the vibes.
I want to see Puyo Puyo Tetris branch out into more puzzle games. Like, I want to see the chaos of 4-player matches where every player is playing a completely different game.

Even beyond the idea of including stuff like Panel de Pon and Dr. Mario in a Switch 2 exclusive release (the Panel de Pon fairies would fit in pretty well with the PPT cast, wouldn’t they?), why don’t they at least include Columns? Doesn’t Sega own Columns?
So, I’ve been thinking about how a 3D (arena) platform fighter would be designed.

Since you can’t input “up” or “down” in a 3D game, I was thinking a couple of the triggers would be devoted to “low stance” and “high stance” so you can still do your up and down tilts/airs/specials/smashes. But then you can’t play it on a GameCube controller without a weird control scheme.

Although, for there to even be a point to there being so much space to run around in (other than making it easier to stall and run down the clock,) all of the characters‘ movesets would need to have a crazy amount of stage control, wouldn’t they? It would be an interesting opportunity to think about some design ideas that‘d be absurd in a 2D game.
You know what feature Animation Versus REALLY needs? A desktop pet mode. You know, so the stickmen are fighting on your own computer’s desktop. You could either play standard matches using whatever windows you have open as custom-arranged platforms (although obviously this mode would be local multiplayer/vs CPUs only) or you can let the CPUs fight while you use your mouse cursor to troll them.
You know, I think I am getting Sonic Racing Crossworlds first, and maybe getting Mario Kart and a Switch 2 later down the road. Mario Kart’s going nowhere, after all.
Or maybe I’ll get neither. If I wait, Sega games always go down in price. But then I don’t know how long Crossworlds’ online will be active. Team Sonic Racing’s online died incredibly fast, but it also didn’t have crossplay, so hopefully Crossworlds will fare better since it does have crossplay.

I’m just wondering when Sega is going to share more information about it. They haven’t even announced a release date. I’d imagine they were waiting for Nintendo to announce the Mario Kart release date so they can plan around it, so hopefully they have a release date in mind now.
I have to admit: as much as I loved Kirby Air Ride back in the day and played it for hours (much of that being just messing around in the free roam mode of City Trial,) I can’t really realistically imagine I’d play Air Riders quite as much, even if it has way more content.

I think a big part of that is just the fact that, as an adult, it’s harder to just enjoy, like, existing in a game’s world. Gotta experience all the functional content, gotta move onto the next game…

In regards to MKW’s giant overworld, the idea of exploring it gets my imagination going but I’m not sure if it’d actually be that fun, at least as an adult.
Interesting thing I noticed from MKW footage is that, instead of you holding the item button to drag items behind your vehicle, all items are automatically dragged behind you. And I mean all items (that aren’t orbiting triple items.) I assume that might mean that people can steal your beneficial items by bumping into your rear bumper, so watch out. Admittedly, it’ll be nice to not need to hold the item button for ages (if I do buy it, idk yet.)
The main thing during the Kirby Air Riders teaser that made me think it might be Air Ride was the fact that Kirby was trying to grab onto the flat side of the Warpstar (in a Kirby platformer, he grabs onto the thin side instead.) I might be too much of a Kirby nerd.

Also, props to Kirby for being a total boss and nailing the perfect glide landing after freefalling out of the stratosphere (also confirming that perfect glide landings are a returning mechanic.) I would’ve crashed into the ground and gotten the laggy awkward bounce that slows you down.
Based on the title “Kirby Air Riders”, I wonder if it might have more playable characters. It’d be cool if you could pair any character with any vehicle (unlike the original game, where Dedede can only exclusively use his specific Wheelie Bike and Meta Knight can only be on foot.) A big advantage of this system is that the other characters would be usable in City Trial (if it returns) too.

I wonder how they’d manage to make the other characters as interesting and fun as Kirby with his ability to copy enemies for a variety of distinct moves, though.
Did you know there’s a brand new non-remake Katamari Damacy game releasing tomorrow?
    …exclusively on Apple Arcade.

I’m watching a Japanese livestreamer playing it right now since it’s already April 3rd there.

Thats kind of sad, love the Katamari games & had no idea a new game was coming. Hopefully it becomes more widely known or available later or at least does well enough so we get another game that is.

Yeah, I wouldn’t have even known it existed without said livestreamer playing it…

The title of the game is Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE if you want to look it up.

The narrative gimmick is that the King of All Cosmos became an influencer and is livestreaming the Prince doing requests for people, so there’s always a fake stream chat on one side of the screen. Other than that, it seems to be just like any of the console games.
Just tried some ranked Fall Guys since that just released today. The difficulty level is insane right now since all the best players are still in the low ranks (although, I'm pretty good myself, so I still managed to get a win after a few tries.) The gameplay isn't really much different than non-ranked, so it's mainly an extra thing to work toward each season, I think.
March 31... what a boring day in gaming. All the cool stuff is April 1st or April 2nd.

Before you tell me that April 1st consists only of jokes, a bunch of stuff is already pre-announced:
And, Landfall (the devs of Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, Content Warning, ect.) usually posts something significant on April 1st. They could possibly shadowdrop their next game Haste: Broken Worlds for all we know (TABS was also shadowdropped on an April 1st.) Or maybe they have something completely different planned? Who knows?!
People say that people would be alienated if they drastically change veterans’ movesets, but… if they drastically change every veteran’s moveset, so everyone is alienated, nobody is alienated, right? We’d all be in the same boat learning our new characters.
Because of the fighting game Animation Versus being an upcoming thing, I finally actually watched Animation vs. Animator (although I didn’t watch all of the other animations yet that are outside that subseries.)

It’s crazy how high-quality the animation gets as it goes on!

I also had kinda assumed it was mainly a relic of ancient YouTube (which the earliest episodes were,) but the most recent episode of the main AvA subseries released only 3 months ago, and there are even more recent animations than that.
Today, Neopets released its 56th Neopet species, the Varwolf, which is the first new species they’ve released in the last 11 years! It’s currently only available in an “early access” state if you have Premium, and won’t be available for everyone until the summer, though.

This design was actually created back in 2005 as part of an April Fool’s prank where they claimed they were adding 50 new species. So, it took them 20 years to actually use it.

I like the fact that, since every Neopet has a Flash animation introducing it, they had to make a Flash animation for the Varwolf too. A Flash animation in 2025, can you believe it?
This is the kind of game that I’m really excited about the release of, not because I plan on buying it and playing it myself, but because I’m really excited to watch videos and livestreams of people way better at it than I am playing it.

Also, the little foxes that appear in a couple of the modes are cute.
Goofy game pitch: in a new Luigi’s Mansion game, King Boo accidentally addresses a letter to Waluigi instead. After Waluigi shows up alone to the spooky mansion, E. Gadd, having no idea who Waluigi is and not trusting him to use his latest and greatest Poltergust, instead gives him a modified Chiritorie to catch ghosts with.

So there goes Waluigi… trying to catch ghosts with a tiny remote-controlled Roomba… with a remote that only has a single button on it…

Luigi shows up later and has to work together with Waluigi despite their complete lack of any kind of chemistry. Insert funny cutscenes with 10/10 Next Level Games animations.
I remember seeing someone having a thread on Twitter asking how people would react if the next Nintendo Direct sucked. The problem is, I’m finding it hard to imagine what could possibly realistically be in the Direct that would lead to me thinking it absolutely sucked (as opposed to “that’s disappointing but at least I saw thing.”) Like, it’s pretty much guaranteed to have Mario Kart info in it and that alone would be interesting enough for me.

I guess it hypothetically could only talk about the system‘s specs but they wouldn’t do that. …Right?

Actually, I might also be pretty disappointed if they don’t show off the system’s OS at all. I think that’s a more realistic worry.
I wonder if Icarus (the guy in actual mythology, not Pit) will ever appear in Kid Icarus.

He might not be a kid, though, given he’s a regular human and the timescale of the series. He might also be a little angry, actually, after faceplanting into the ground and having to crawl his way out of the Underworld (the entrance to which would probably logically be at least briefly unguarded after the defeat of Hades and most of his underlings.)

In the tutorial of Kid Icarus Uprising, Pit directly asks Palutena who Icarus is since the game is named after him.

But Palutena just brushes the subject off without answering. Presumably because she doesn’t what the reveal of what happened to Icarus’ wings to upset Pit.
    MBRedboy31

It just occurred to me that the series might have a different name in Japan, and it does, “Light Mythology: Mirror of Palutena”, so…

I mean, Icarus could show up anyway, since he’s still a well-known mythological character, but still.
Have you ever thought about how cursed an actually 2D game would be?

You know how we 3D people essentially only see in 2D, even despite having depth perception? A truly 2D game would have a 1D display. Merely a vertical or horizontal line with colors.

Maybe it could still have depth perception, which I’d represent by making the line thicker when objects are nearer. If the game is a side-scroller and not top-down, I’d also say the protagonist has eyes on both sides of their head and thus display both directions in splitscreen. Even with all that, navigating this environment would be pretty challenging…

(At least it isn’t a 1D game, in which the display would be a single pixel.)
I had an Apple Arcade free trial, but it ended today, so I finally stopped procrastinating and speedran nearly all of Sonic Dream Team (I had only beaten the first two levels beforehand) to beat the final boss in one day. Maybe I shouldn't have waited until the last day, but it was pretty cool still.

(It's very hard to play it with touchscreen controls, so I connected a PS4 controller to my iPad to play it, although needing to do that is a big part of why I was procrastinating in the first place.)
Thinking about it, I see only two avenues by which pre-gaming Nintendo can get representation in Smash.

    1. 9-Volt gets in and he has Ultra Hand or hanafuda cards or something in his moveset.
    2. Toy-Con House from Nintendo Labo gets in as a stage (there is a framed picture of Napoleon from old Nintendo hanafuda card boxes on the wall)
It really is a “Mickey gets in only as the keychain on Sora’s Keyblade” situation.
I kinda miss when we got “generic” DLC Mii costumes in Smash 4. I get that they probably didn’t sell that well compared to the ones based on characters, but it was fun seeing them release and thinking about what Miis I could pair with them.

The Business Suit DLC was my pick for my personal Mii Swordfighter in Smash 4, and I continued to use it when it appeared in base game Ultimate.
