  • Enough with "how can we make platform fighters more popular", more "how can we make platform fighters more fun".
I don't know if this is post-3D All-Stars negativity speaking, but between Peach Showtime's devs and Mario's VA in Wonder, the "you'll find out in the credits" thing Nintendo has been doing lately is really starting to raise eyebrows for me
I've been watching Kingdom Hearts world speculation videos lately, and it's weird to me (even if not necessarily unexplainable) that KH speculation seems to be more civil than Smash speculation (unless I've only been lucky enough to encounter the right channels) - like, surely a KH world is a WAY bigger deal, near-infintely so, than a Smash character, right? There's less worlds in a KH game than a Smash game; KH worlds have entire mandatory plots with multiple speaking characters that often serve as outright sequels; and going back to old worlds is the exception and not the norm - Smash characters, on the other hand, rarely get removed from instalment to instalment; are ultimately little more than just a cameo of a single character you can choose not to control; and are part of a huge pantheon that keeps on growing. Obviously this is the result of the way Nintendo markets and distributes Smash characters (CGI trailers, Amiibos, mystery passes) actively promoting toxicity and grandstanding (intentionally or otherwise) and not just a case of KH fans all being good noodles, but there's still a cruel irony to it. KH fans seem to keep their cool when talking about nutjob ideas like live action remakes or The Simpsons, Smash fans will create a warzone if you suggest an idea as inoffensive as Lara Croft or Angry Birds.
I made this a long while back and forgot to post it.
Does not account for taunts, victory animations, and the simple "this move now deals less damage" stuff you'd see in balance patches. Made within the context of a casual game.

    Mario:
    -Happier disposition
-Cape is swapped for tanooki tail. Functionally the same

    -Classic Voice
-Headbutt involves DK slamming a barrel. Functionally the same.

I've been watching Gaming in the Clinton Years lately, and now I think about it, a lot of the common criticisms of non-Smash platform fighters are a tiny bit... George Woodian. You tend to see the sentiment of "The gameplay's better than Smash, but that doesn't matter because the roster is all OCs/there's no story mode/there's no items/character X is missing/e.t.c." a lot, which feels very GITCY
"They should make the next Sonic/Smash/Kingdom Hearts/whatever T-rated!"
I'm looking at all the Palworld character designs, and I feel like half of them are genuinely kinda cool or cute - I really like the dopey Xatu clone, moss mammothm, and edgy Bellossum - but the other half hits a really weirdly specific uncanny valley I cannot put my finger on.
The ending of Designing For's Waluigi video was kinda ****ed up, even if most likely not an intentional way. I think the notion was "what was hated becomes beloved with time as people with different perspectives are able to speak, isn't that great!", a good message, but in execution it came off more as "We did it Reddit, we bullied the Waluigi haters into hiding!". No matter how much I love Waluigi, the erasure of old internet articles expressing disdain for Waluigi is not a good thing.
So, Elon Musk thinks AI is going to be "woke", but also thinks AI will be "smarter than all humans combined"?

    Self-owned I guess.

    Oracle Link
I mean Trained Ai can certainly be woke I mean there is an Ai Who generates everyone across History
as a Minority or Woman ... Including German soldiers from a specific era!

And You can be both smart and woke like the ai Knows what the truth is yet delibaratly lies! Dioes this make the ai smarter than all humans combined... probably not although i would say ai is pretty smart Evil (in both directions) and dangerous but smart!
    Champion of Hyrule

Oracle Link Oracle Link did you just unironically use “woke” like it’s a term that actually means anything anymore?
    Oracle Link
    Oracle Link
I mean it doesnt really mean anything anymore! But still if you go by some definitions of that word that Ai Counts as just that!
Obviously its not actually woke as nowadays you could say broke and it usually means the same thing!

But yeah that word is pretty dumb!
So, even Clippy Deniers can agree that Duolingo is a video game, right?
why does mega man 6 have two racist bosses
With this recent talk of indie vs. corporate, I honestly fail to see any reason to work with a corporation on a creative product beyond just the IP catalog (whether that being using it or getting inducted into it). Like, at most you get more marketing, but most corporations pay on commission instead of royalties so you're not particularly impacted by the marketing one way or the other. Otherwise, you don't keep the IP, you can't talk about your time at work in depth, you're beholden to strict schedules, and don't even get me started on those focus groups. Even the upside of having someone else handle budget is negated when corporations don't like working with people who don't have established portfolios. I dunno, maybe someone with better corporate know-how can well-actually me on this.

Marketing is whats incredibly important though. People think/thought the advent of the internet was supposed to usher in a renaissance of indie publishing, but all it really did was increase the signal to noise ration significantly. In order to get your work known among a deluge of information you need a big voice and that usually means lots of capital. And that usually means signing up with a professional publisher.

The other issue is, believe it or not, distribution. You would think that digital media would have solved this problem, but it actually turns out that you need technical knowledge to truly publish your works independently. All of these media platforms usually have stipulations in their ToS that they own the rights to your work and can do anything they want with it. A lot of what is being considered as indie publishing isn't truly indie publishing thanks to this. If you wanted to actually publish on the internet you would need to know how to build your own website and make use of networks like torrents or IRC or something like that.

But it is kind of an amalgamation of things that can do it. The collective negotiations and legalese that comes from distributing on various platforms with their own rules and restrictions as well as things like PR and marketing can overwhelm small teams. Signing with a publisher essentially gives you an indefinite service that handles all of that so that people can concentrate on creating in the first place.

But that's really only if you want big profits or to become popular/famous. Because of this insanity I think creators should just focus on making a quality product instead. You might not make enough to live off of your work but at least you can be free to actualize your vision to the best of your ability.
A Kingdom Hearts game directed by me, someone who knows nothing about Kingdom Hearts and only cares about the Disney characters.

Disney Worlds: (in gameplay progression order)

    1. Polynesia (Moana)

    6. Kuzco's Empire (The Emperor's New Groove)
    7. The Axiom (Wall-E)
    8. The Great Before (Soul)
    9. A Galaxy Far Away (Star Wars)
    10. The Muppet Show (Mini-game world, could go anywhere in the game order)
    Square-Enix worlds:

    1. Della Duck
    2. Oswald & Ortensia
    3. Phineas & Ferb
Insane how the message of Sakurai's competition video was "having competition is good and will make your game better" and the takeaway the comments of it are getting is "smash clones will never be good and should stop trying".
    Wario Wario Wario

Also he said the quiet part out loud again. This is why Pokemon and Smash (the two Nintendo franchises with the biggest impact on Nintendo's wider bottom line outside of the single game, and the most disillusioned fans) aren't preserved as well as Nintendo's other IPs - Melee would be as easy as looking up which revision is the correct one and choosing that one, a majority of DS games on the Wii U VC lost as much from losing multiplayer support as DPP and BWB2W2 would, but neither series' legacy titles would introduce people to new plastic figures like the new games would.
I'm going to try and play (and maybe complete) every Virtual Boy game at some point - I just want to acquire some 3D glasses first - and the fact the first game on the lineup alphabetically is called "3D Tetris" is somewhat anxiety inducing. Tetris-gimmick-variants are always either the best or worst thing ever, there is no inbetween.
The Nintendo Monopoly variant is 1. very clearly meant to mess with Google results about the 1980s, 2. based around the very bizarre conciet of buying Nintendo characters (I really hope that means their sports contracts), 3. places Wario and Waluigi as having the lowest price, which is complete slander, and 4. stretched so hard to give Metroid equal representation to the other franchises that they made Samus' morph ball form a seperate character.

The weird number formatting is a holdover from an earlier version that only mentioned those first 2 points.
I rarely if ever make Smash suggestions as jokes, everything I vouch for, even if it's a fundamentally comedic idea like the Sega logo or something, there's always some underlying logic or cool factor... that being said, if I was put in charge of a Real Actual Smash game, I would pull a "grimdark Epic Mickey" and just make a fake roster filled with the most stupid Nintendo references that would never ever work no matter how creative you are just to test what Nintendo allows - Who's ready to fight as "Zelda key piece from Nintendo Cereal System" or "Torn out page from Nintendo Power promoting an aborted contest to appear in the cancelled Mask 2"?
I can't help but think that if you removed just one of the Nintendo 64's staple first party or Rare games from its lineup, it would instantly collapse like a Jenga tower into the 3DO/Jaguar zone in public perception. In terms of quantity, the canonical "good games" just barely make up a full library. It's weird too, because I can't say that about GameCube, which had a very similar historical context to N64 - I can imagine a world where the GameCube is beloved without a major game like Monkey Ball 2 or Smash Melee, I cannot imagine a world where the N64 is well-remembered without something like Pokemon Puzzle League or Mario Golf just barely contributing to keeping the tower stable.
It baffles that people used to have such a hard time grasping that the Nostalgia Critic is satire. I don't mean the Nostalgia Critic's meta-critics, I mean other critics who were inspired by the Nostalgia Critic. Old Mr. Enter is probably the most well known example - like, they get angry, play clips from other movies as reactions, and format their reviews as "clip - commentary - clip - commentary" in chronological order like NC, but compared to NC they never do silly slapstick acting and always try to be genuinely analytical with their own opinions instead of a funny forum nitpicker who compares everything he sees to the intimate body areas and fluids of popular characters.
    Internal Frickface
    Internal Frickface
i like most people who never understood that the angery parts of the reviews were meant to be funny or jokes, so people like old mr enter like you mentioned, just came off as less funny or hysterical, and moreso just came off as genuinely unwell and angry and theyre pissing themselves over a spongebob cartoon where squidward makes patrick cry or something
I think my biggest regret with DriDim was not having it set as a "Double Dash" type game from the beginning. Would make our iconic team racers and crossover seasons a bit difficult if not non-existant, but seeing Harley and Taz drive together in that MVS McDonald's advert makes me severely regret not taking the opportunity to have Squidward and Chun-Li share the wheel on Optimus Prime
The idea of a "YouTube fighting game" is funny to me - it's typically brought up by people who like kid-skewing YouTubers like Markiplier or MatPat who have larger-than-life stage personalities that probably translate well into movesets, but if you look at it from my YouTube viewing habits - which tends to skew towards analysis-comedy video essays, with bit of straightforward comedy/memes and serious breadtube stuff thrown in - it is completely incompatible. The idea of Kevin Perjurer having a Michael Eisner jumpscare super move or debating the legality of the Ashens couch stage is hilarious.
It's really weird how people talk about reasons given for not exercising or dieting, valid or otherwise, as "excuses" - like, excuses for what? What obligation do they owe you? It's not like odor or something where it could prove intrusive towards others, it's their body, you don't gain or lose anything from how they handle it.
