Okay, now that I'm actually awake, I want to go into a bit more depth with my "Smash killer" talk from yesterday, hopefully in a more coherent manner.
I'm not against the term "Smash killer" because I think Smash is a perfect product with absolutely no imperfections. It isn't, and I'm glad all of these new platfighters are focusing on areas of the genre where Smash fumbles.
My problem with the term stems from the fact that... well, it has never been true. Slap City wasn't a Smash killer, Rivals of Aether wasn't a Smash killer, NASB wasn't a Smash killer, and I don't have much faith in Multiversus being a Smash killer either. Not to say that these are bad games, far from it. It's just that they failed to make Smash obsolete. The reason as to why is likely due to Nintendo being a major player in gaming rather than a fault of any non-Smash platfighter, but saying each and every platfighter is going to be a "Smash killer" just comes off as desperate these days.
Not only that... it's kinda disrespectful towards non-Smash platfighters? In most cases, they're not even trying to directly compete with Smash, at least not in the way that fans are playing them up. Rivals of Aether has amazing pixel art and teaches players the ins and outs of the more technical side of platfighters, NASB clearly has a lot of dedication towards the competitive scene and Nickelodeon fans, and Multiversus' emphasis on team-based gameplay sets it apart from pretty much every other platfighter out there. They are
so much more than "Smash killers", "Smash clones", or anything like that, so to see the identity of pretty much every non-Smash platfighter boil down to being described as those terms really downplays the vision and work behind the teams who make them possible.
Smash is probably never going to be irrelevant. That on its own makes the term "Smash killer" a ridiculous claim at best. More than that, though, it paints the image of the platfighter scene as being simply "Smash and all its clones" when it is really more diverse than that. I know folks here don't do this kind of stuff, so I hold no ill will towards anyone here. I just hope that the platfighter community at large can stop playing up all these great games as Smash killers and simply enjoy them for what they are without the idea of knocking Nintendo down a peg.
