No preamble, ill just get right into it.

So something thats been bugging me for a while; is it just me, or is smash bros. by far the 'gayest' video game community?

Over the last five years ive participated a lot in the Battlefield series, DotA, WoW and some nintendo and IRL gaming communities. In all that time I have never seen such overuse of the terms 'gay', '****', '<3' and endless references to 'meatriding' etc whenever someone does something good, as I have in the smash bros community. Granted i've never really been a part of console gaming communities, my experiences are mostly from a PC background so I dont know how things are in Halo, SF etc.

Now I'm not homophobic or anything, I frequent the Lucario chat, which should say a lot lmao. Anyway Im just wondering is it just me, or is smash bros. really the 'gayest' gaming community out there? Every time I see people saying 'I love you' or simply '<3' in response to something they agree with it just gets on my nerves, was there not any other way you could have expressed your agreement? I have never seen this style of posting in all my years of living on various game forums.

I go to a university games club and most people there dont like, or even hate, smash bros and the reason is generally because smash bros is 'gay'. When I view SWF forums with this in mind, its not too hard to see why people might think that. Especially when just about every character has a 'gay' playstyle or 'gay' attacks as referenced by so many.

Or is it a case of smash bros simply having a much larger proportion of players who may actually be gay, and have no problems with telling anyone and everyone? Is there something about the game that attracts these people?

I got the urge to post this after someone asked why there was a p3nis in my signature... I truly can not believe how someone would see that >_<

why would anyone say **** in the brawl boards other than the ice climber? You as in controling. and why are you surprized? dude I was thinking about trying brawl again and I looked at some guides, wtf chain throwing is a most have skill for king dedede to win? unescapeable chain throws all over the place? laser, leg and other locks? metaknight and super campers? And this is only some of the retarted stuff I saw.

we had none of that in melee and people still say things are gay sheik wyf, but reason being that mother F***ing gay or playing like a little B**** and worse it's not hard as any of the few melee infi's I,ve wobbled and waveshined before for but it's not like I geuss I win because you have to have perfect frame data(little less for waveshining).

people have always said this is retarted then other people when like oh no stop insulting the mentaly handicapped now it's gay with same thing I predict the next thing will jewish, because they are always geting srcewed over.

Get a grip? wtf theres not a problem with it. Its to others that see it. Like at the games club I go to,
"hey does anyone wanna play smash?"
"lol smash is gay"

._.

I'm just trying to understand why smash bros (specifically, SWF) far and way is the most 'affectionate' gaming community. I dont see any real links. Check out AIB, or any other smash bros website. It is no where near as prevalent than it is here.

Gopo is too pro Lol. That was amazing.
We're playing a party game designed for casual play, we're not going to exactly have all the hardcore competitive gamers are we. We're going to have many casual turned competitive ones, who are more social then competitive.

Then tell them to **** off. Jeez.

"Lol Smash is gay" is like one of the lamest things I've ever heard. If that's the best retort they can come up with then honestly they're not very worthwhile company. -__-

Must be something in the water.

But seriously, when those guys say "Smash is gay," are they actually referring to the community? As in, they've been on Smashboards and they think it's gay, or are they just making fun of Smash because it's Nintendo and it's rated T and it's got a bunch of cutesy Pokemon type characters as fighters?

Fake homo affection is pretty much typical on video game forums where the majority of posters are guys. But a friend of mine from another gaming forum did say that the Smash community is more of a "real community" than other gaming communities. SWF is well established and good at organizing events where people meet each other in person, more so than some other communities where people might do tourneys now and then but don't socialize much outside of that.

Also, as Nixernator pointed out, Smash is a party game, so it can be played non-competitively, which increases its appeal to people who just want to use it as a social activity.

tl;dr - Yes, we are all gay.

All three iterations of this game are 'gay' in their own regard.

But, and I know there are a lot of gaming communities who are big enough to admit it, but there are a lot of gaming communities out there that actually envy the community we have.

Not every person is going to like every game they see. It's a fact of life. I get bored with MMORPG's really quickly for instance. People here will defend smash to the grave, but then refuse to see the competitive scene for pokemon, arguing that Red/Blue/Yellow was the best generation even though the current generation is well and truly the best competitive battling generation ever.

Using the word 'gay' for something people 'don't like' shouldn't really be read into. I can see where you're coming from with this blog, but my only answer is that words like 'gay' and 'homo' take on a different context in our community (when talking about smash).

tl:dr - NO UR FACE IS GAY <3 <3 <3

Then I will now argue that Halo is most certainly gay, as all you seem to hear from those twelve year olds is how much they want to **** you and stick their **** in your face.

Yeah, I said it. Get at me. Halo is most certainly a gay community. They're all in the closet about it of course, because they think talking about those things is totally straight, but you know the truth.

El Nino's basically right about it though, so I'll just follow him.

Is it really?

Like I said, Ive lived on WoW, BF2/2142, DotA and general Nintendo forums. All dominated by guys. None of them get within a million miles of the amount of 'gay / **** / <3' useage as SWF does.

Well, I actually think it's more because of the serious Smash discussions. Whenever other discuss tier lists and it gets to heated up, they'll say:

"Ok, stop it guys, we're turning into Smashboards".

I guess then find that gay. I mean, gay attacks, lol? I think they didn't have anything to say.

That could be because our community doesn't use Geeky words like 'N00b'...

Looks like someone doesn't know how the European WoW forums were back in 2007-2008. Namely the off-topic section. (Because the rest of the forums were all "nerf my counter-class nao pl0z!", so the OT was the only place worth reading)
SWF looks like a homophobe compared to how that place was. (And yes, "was".. The mods didn't like it and decided to perma-ban almost every regular from there, who then made their own forums.)

*scarred for life*

The thing that makes Smash different from WoW is the fact that Brawl's WiFi capability isn't all that great (maybe it sucks). To play Smash competitively, you would need to go out and meet people. So then what you have on Smashboards is a community of people, many of whom actually know each other outside of the Internet. That's a different level of socializing than just online socializing. I'm more likely to go all <3 on someone I know in person rather than an online buddy. And I actually use smilies. None of that's really gay; it's more like, "Haven't seen you in months, hope you're not dead? *sadface*"

Also, Smash is a game that was never in the arcades. I remember, back in the day, you could play people in Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Calibur just by going to the arcade on a busy day. But to play Smash competitively, you'd have to met up at someone's house or something. So you'd start off in your own circle of friends and expand from there. At the arcades, on the other hand, you'd be playing strangers in the beginning.

These things just make Smash more "social."

So, if this all looks like one big homo party, that's because a lot of people here just know each other well enough that it's funny. <3 is just how to say hello.

And for the rest of us, it's because we really are homo.

EDIT: Did I just spend fifteen minutes psychoanalyzing the behavioral patterns of a gaming community? What is wrong with me?

I rather an overly "welcoming" community (if we can put it at that) than some of the more absurd things I've been hearing about other communities, and from what I've actually seen.

People are really dumb in WoW (I'm (or was, thank God) no exception), and while Dota is a good game, it's much better played in a small group of friends, the battle.net community is just awful.

You know, Phantasy Star Online was a great (MM?)ORPG until the servers went offline. C.A.R.D. Revloution was the same thing although I never was good in that game.

also heres is my deep affectionate love for you, total stranger, from far across the internet with love <3

may you be as totally gay as they say and may your hand masterstroke the other gays you look up too

DotA, Wow and other games don't require the intimacy of smash. Every majorly successful event for smash bros has been offline and required people to travel. Regardless of what Brawl tried, the vast majority of the community still go to the face to face tournaments.

Smash, as opposed to any other competitive community, is mostly player driven. Successful tournaments are not generally held by gaming centers, but rather by the players themselves. Tournament directors rely on the players to bring setups. No other community requires people to travel that much, nor do they expect people to provide there own stations. Smash is unique and because we as smashers built it, we are VERY hesitant to accept changes to that style. That might be considered "gay" to your friends, but most veterans of the game appreciate it's uniqueness.

MVC2 is gayer.

What I really hate is that if you main a girl character, casual smashers and non-smashers alike don't take you seriously. See, my brother (who thinks that Brawl sucks) said I was a ****** for picking Peach, and when my friend (who likes Brawl) asked who I main, I said 'Peach, with ZSS as a secondary' and he's like 'Oh, I bet you just pick them and say, 'She's sexy, she's sexy, she's sexy...' and I'm like 'WTF?!'

im a female and i dont main female characters. While i've played Sammy, ZSS, Zelda/Sheik, Peach, ivysaur, nana and love them for what pros they have to offer; i didnt feel comfortable playing them

they're pretty immature if they honestly believe its due to sexual origin

Did you make fun of him for checking out a video game character?

I used to main Chun Li in my Street Fighter II days. My brother and a couple friends used to main Ling Xiao Yu in Tekken. I think the prejudice against using girl characters goes away the more serious you are about a game.

You should have read our conversations in the Ike boards xat while we were doing our round robin tourney >_>

Every second line contained <3, ****, sexual references, goblin **** (yes, goblin ****) and how one or more of us was "just a lil' homo". In fact, out first idea for a name for our xat was "The Man Chat", and the description was going to be "Teeny bit homo". We ended up going with "Ike Babies".

It was good fun though. See I don't think it's so much that a lot of smashers are gay themselves, but certainly a vast majority are not in any way homophobic. It makes for a more fun and carefree environment, and I like it.

Why is it that when someone says "gay" these days... It was never intended to mean "happy"?

♥ My post count is my age. Deal with it.
@ OP:
Wait. The gay as in:

1) Homosexual.

or

2) Gay = dumb, idiotic, for childern, etc... (incorrect and mistreated definition)

It is obviously not the happy = gay.
Define gay.

Because you have two "gays" usage going in your original paragraph, so the title is misleading.

Well. . . . we do have spadefox, spadfoxes boyfriend, and yuna.
i would go gay for DDD, in a heart beat

non-sarcastic response; while back in the 40s gay really meant happy, it has been modernized into something that means its "unfair, or something REALLY dumb"

im not sure about the homosexual community here at SWF, but i've found some homosexuals to take offense to that when the term "gay" is used out of context as stated above

Haha, well you know, all of my mains in fighting games are girls, and I'm straight. I got used to it. I played Mortal Kombat with my friends when I was little (lol, it was ok), and I sucked with everyone but Sonya. So I played her. Same for Tekken. So I only main girls, idk, they're fun.

Smash - Peach, 2nd: Zelda
Dead or Alive - Lei Fang, 2nd: Hitomi
Tekken - Anna and Asuka.
Street Fighter - Chun-li, 2nd: Rose
Soul Calibur 4 - Seong Mi-na
Naruto series - Sakura

So yeah ;d

Probably because we don't want to devolve to like, the Halo community or something where people are shouting at each other on Xbox Live with racist comments every five seconds and being total morons.

Regardless, it doesn't matter. Okay, so we jokingly say things like "I love you"...we as a community do a LOT of things most people don't do. Which is probably for the better, considering most people are stupid...

Also, people saying Smash is "gay" aren't talking about that kind of thing. They mean it in the immature, "oh that's stupid" way. Why? Because they're idiots. I doubt they know anything about the competitive community. Except for dumb misconceptions that most people seem to pick up, like people who hate Brawl only hate it because it lacks wavedashing and L-canceling.
