I wouldn't go so far as to call a video game a sport. Video Game tournaments are REALLY boring to watch if you don't have an orgasm every time some one uses a combo.

I've been to a tournament. Its a boring as hell even if you compete in it. You can't play with items, you can't use select stages, you can't play as certain characters. Why does Nintendo bother putting updates in the game if most people think using them is bad?
You cannot use certain terrain for certain sports (or rather: most sports are terrain-specific). You cannot use certain performance enhancing drugs, equipment, etc. in almost every sport in existence. Certain tactics are banned in almost every sport in existence.

Also, there has been zero updates for Brawl. Melee got v. 1.0-1.2 + PAL and none of the changes were banned (in fact, most of them were embraced). So I really don't get that part of your rant.

you can't play as certain characters.
Only at really stupid tournaments nobody credible would ever attend except maybe for spare cash... or friendlies in some Scrub's basement.

Umbreon, it's not the same thing. Movies are something most people enjoy. And people who do not enjoy watching movies usually do not spend the time and money required to go the movies to go to the movies with friends because "it's more fun".

We're not talking about people bringing their girl-/boyfriends along who may be Smashers or gamers themselves or who are interested in the game, budding gamers, etc. We're talking about people bringing bfs/gfs who are obviously disinterested in the game.

Cruisin in my Jeep.. I wish.
i feel like theres two main reasons why guys bring their gfs to smash tournaments.

1, to show off the fact that they have one.

or

2, the girlfriend is also interested in smash and wants to play too.

yes. yes there is.

if you think a guy brings a girl to a tournament simply to make YOU feel bad, or to gain him an edge in smash, you're making the assumption that the game is the most important thing to him, not just wanting to spend time with his beaux--probably a projection on your part, no?

and any non-top level player, any smash player that doesn't place in or around the money, that takes smash seriously enough to consider it the most important priority in their lives, is...well, stupid.

i mean, don't get me wrong, far be it for me to tell you how to live your life, but it's like someone that ABSOLUTEY LOVES PLAYING BASKETBALL even though he's completely awful at it. i mean, let's be sensible.

You don't know the relationship of the two. What if she wanted to go because she likes brawl...or watching her husband/boyfriend play video games period?

The last time I checked coney, it's up to you to waste your time doing whatever the hell you want...if that means being serious in Brawl then so be it. If they aren't the best brawl player in the world, who is going to tell them that they are wasting their time sucking or doing average? Who cares? Even if you did care, your not being "sensible" enough because you don't know why they feel that way........passion overrides success and I rather be happy doing something than to feel happy beating everyone to prove a point.

You could have just said "stupid people who agree to attend events that do not interest them," then. <_<

You ask "why bring the girlfriend" and I ask "why not"
My girlfriend likes to play Brawl with me from time to time. For whatever reason she prefers to just watch me play video games(weird I know:chuckle:)
I don't see a problem with dudes bringing their girlfriends to tournaments...as long as she wants to be there.
I say, the more people at the tournament, the more opportunities there are to make friends and meet some cool people.
So why discourage people bringing girlfriends or anyone else to the tournaments?

I think u guys r retarted....

Maybe they are interested in the game/ the people at the event

I tried everything to get my ex to stay at home but she would just want to come regardless. Whenever I'd go on break to go eat or toke we would chill but I wouldn't let her get in the way of the day and I certainly wasn't insecure or all this bull****. In the end I think this topic is retarted and whoever made it was prolly drunk at the time...
You are a ****ing idiot. You walk into a topic that has alot of intelligent discussion, throw random *** insults around at people you dont even know, and then leave like a ****ing little prick. If you wanna talk **** why dont you read the ****ing thread first ******

Anyways... I agree totally with Yuna.

And to everyone else who is arguing "why not" and "because"... those are not good reasons at all. If you have relationship experience at all, you should know by now that that kind of attitude isnt going to get you anywhere. You dont just bring your girlfriend/boyfriend to tournaments nonchalantly, and not give a **** about whether or not they will enjoy themselves or end up being bored.

Also, of course there are girls who like video games and are good at them. I said that in the first post. Learn to read.

uh, isn't that what i'm arguing? i clearly said that anyone that thinks dudes bring dudettes to smash tourneys for a psychological edge is probably taking the game too seriously, and is making assumptions that are clearly absurd. read harder!

The last time I checked coney, it's up to you to waste your time doing whatever the hell you want...if that means being serious in Brawl then so be it. oh sure, it's whoever's right to suck at whatever they want, that's cool. but for someone to get passionate enough to spend ~$30 and a day off every single weekend, all to participate in something they're clearly not especially talented at...seems a tad wasteful. there are so many other things you could be doing that don't cost money, especially on your day off, to come to tournaments every weekend just to place last isn't especially smart.

If they aren't the best brawl player in the world, who is going to tell them that they are wasting their time sucking or doing average? Who cares?
no one, but not for the reasons you think. higher level players like another pot-filler, middle-level players like the free win.

Sad but true story, And before I tell it, I hope this never happens to any of you guys who just decides to bring their GFs to tournament. Sit down and Listen children. Ehem.

So in 2007, I was at a Melee tournament in queens. I played my first round in tournament and won. After I won, this random girl came up and asked me "Are you Jash?" and I replied "Yes I am". She went on to say "I am a big fan of your Young Link and I wanted to know if you can give me tips on mine?" As innocent as this sounds as I couldn't help but say yes. So we started talking about Young Link for like 4 minutes and then all of a sudden the subject switches into "What do you do in your free time?"

First thought on my mind was she was trying to be my friend and keep in contact, so I answered it truthfully. As the questions went on it got more personal and ended up with "Hey Jash, do you have a phone? I would like to call you sometime *smile*." Now right there, I would think she was single and she wanted to get to know me more. This is where things got ugly.....real ugly. After I gave her my number, I noticed this guy looking at us, and after hearing him scream at her, found out that was her "*BF*". He was just standing there after he finished his tournament match and watched us talking like an assassin stalker.

I walk up to the guy and apologize to him because it was very disrespectful of me EVEN THOUGH I had no idea that was his girl. Angry as he was he said "Don't worry, It's not your fault, I guess I shouldn't have told her to come today."

It was very tragic, I hope this doesn't happen to anyone. :(

PS: I won that tournament, I have $340 for singles :bee:

This is the most player story I have ever heard. But yeah I guess that's one downside to bringing girlfriends to such events.

You're too much of a nice guy. I wouldn't have cared for the other guys feelings at all.

Edit: I just noticed I was in your sig....

if the girlfriend wants to come then let her. whenever there is a tourny coming up i always invite her to come just cuz its the nice thing to do. And i dont get mad at her or anything if she says no. But i am really really happy when she says yes. Its for support and her being there already makes me feel better and less nervous. Usually my girlfriend doesnt really WANT to come. But she does anyways just for me. I do thing that does really sound fun, but if she wants to do it, ill do it also. its how any relationship should go.

I don't think my girlfriend would be able to sit around for 6 hours and watch me play a videogame LOL.

Thanks, but no thanks.

But if your girl knows how to play and enters, then it's perfectly acceptable.

I think my girlfriend would get creeped out if she knew I was this obsessed with this game.
You never know until you actually find out. It might seem a little wierd to her at first... But then if you turn it into you winning money then a shopping spree, she'll be cool with it.

That's basically what I did. lol I might not win no money in the tourney but hustlin' with Young Link is just what I dew best.

But yeah. If she's really down with you she shouldn't care. Everyone has side hobbies.

It's a common thing for couples to share aspects of their lives that aren't necessarily thrilling from each others perspectives, but you do it anyways to make them happy. Just remember that if your girlfriend goes with you, to do something special for her afterward.

We all know that girls are a rarity in any gaming community.

In the Smash community some girls like to come because they love the game. Some girls come because they know that they will get attention just from being there.

But what I cant wrap my head around is why a guy would bring his girlfriend with him to a tournament. If I was a girl I would imagine that the last thing I would want to do is come watch a bunch of sweaty, smelly random guys play an old video game in a cramped and crowded room with a lack of chairs for hours at a time.

I get that our girls want to bond with us, and might want to do what we want to do from time to time. They might even tag along just because they want to spend time with us, even if they may not have our full attention. But overall, a tournament is one of the last places I would wanna take my girl if I had a choice. Its just not a good place for a date.

Anyone else agree/disagree?
Wow dude, you just keep on ****in up. LMAO

I agree with Jash's story completely. I definitely have stories and history with smash girls and guys smashers' girlfriends. I've told some people my stories. They know who they are. Some girlfriends of smashers be cheating their a$$ at tournaments/smashfests. I see it all the time. Trust me, I know. I've had first hand experience lol ^_- Lady Uuaa, tell your man to tell you the story I told him unless he told you already. You'll be surprised.
