kevin, i'm not disputing the rankings rather than trying to understand why it's conflicting with the process i had imagined the panel had expressed.

Set counts are the only thing that can give data to power rankings. Thus, set counts are our primary form of data. Now, there is always going to be holes in the data simply because everyone has not fought everyone. When we come to holes in the data, this is when we use other methods, like placing and whatever the panel thinks about that person. Both of these methods are biased. Placing is biased because it largely is based off of seeding which is something that is controlled by the previous ranking period. There is also a random element to seeding. What the panel thinks is obviously biased so I'm not going to explain that. I feel like I have to explain this every time I talk about power rankings. . .

Now, let's look at the data. Here's mine:

PP: 0-??
Lozr: 0-2 (although I did take a match off of him, but this doesn't matter)
Mask: 0-2 (again, I took several matches but this doesn't matter)
Foxy: 1-2 (Even though both set losses were back to back, I'll count it this way)
Crystalnite: 1-1 (my win is also the most recent)
DJRome: 3-0
Jim: 0-0 (although I have beaten people that he has lost to)
Peter: 1-0
TC: 0-0 (again I have beaten people he has lost to)

Ok, here's Foxy's data:

PP: 0-1
Lozr: 0-1 (???)
Mask: 0-0
Karn: 2-1
Crystalnite: 0-0
DJRome: 1-1
Jim: 0-0
Peter: 0-0
TC: 0-0

Looks like DJRome and I are the ONLY power ranked players he has faced this ranking period. He also traded sets with DJ, who is lowly ranked, and has lost a set to me. We have no idea how he would do against Mask, Lozr, Peter, Crystalnite, Peter and TC.

DJ has it right here. I'm being penalized for attendance, just because you want to not penalize Foxy for not attending. Unless you want to penalize attendance, you can't give people the benefit of the doubt when they don't attend. This is because we don't have perfect data.

Personally, I think that if Foxy played how he did vs. me at Duke, he probably would place higher than me pretty consistently. However, he hasn't proven this. Also, Foxy tends to be really inconsistent (which is one of my biggest strengths) so I really don't know if he would beat as many people as I do at more tournaments. I can really see either one of us being higher ranked if he continues to go tournies often. However, this is all my opinion and doesn't matter.

We have certain facts, and they have a lot of holes where Foxy is concerned. By giving him the benefit of the doubt (assuming he will beat all the other people I beat), we are penalizing me for attending everything and also rewarding him for not going to tournaments.

i generally try to reason things out, but i feel like something is inconsistent in the considerations mostly how things are theoretically valued and how they are actually valued in this case

PR principles are ******** and apparently I've always thought of it wrong.

If Foxy or Mike want to come in here and defend Foxy>Karn, then fine. I'm indifferent now since I don't know how PRs work.

I'll make the change one day from now unless there is discussion going on at this point.

Please bring your new PR-related ideas or concerns to Karn. I will not answer them.

Foxy is more technical, better at gimping, and more inconsistent than karn. Karn is smarter, gayer, and more consistent than foxy.

Anyway, I agree with the Lord. He's right though, foxy may start beating him but he needs to shake that inconsistency off. Personally, I thought that it would have happened by now (please, take no offense Lord), but I was surprised that he was put over karn this time.

edit: don't sweat it kev, every one has their own idea of who the top 10 are and it's easy to slip up. everything is open to debate. What's important is to trust in the TP.

I mean, I don't really care about where I am on the PRs, it just seems inaccurate to me so I wanted to point it out. I guess I care a little bit about my spot, because it affects my seeding, but the difference of one spot doesn't even matter because we never know how many of the ranked players are going to show. I just figured since I'm on the panel I would voice my opinion.

The whole "who cares just **** harder next time" mentality kinda sucks imo just because if the rankings aren't as accurate as possible, why have them? I think things like this should be settled.

hmm where am i at? i think i'm being penalized for being new to the competitive scene...

both sides make consistent sense. it seems that although foxy didn't go to all the tourneys, he has similar results to karn. when two players have similar results, instead of having a tie (like brawl) shouldn't head to head sort of decide things? just sort of seems logical to me...

but with that being said, apparently foxy's inconsistent (bet he'd beat me every time though), and he didn't go to all the tournaments. so you have to go from what you see don't you?
