I'm actually kinda mad you just compared Opeth to Dream Theater. Sure they're both progressive, but really?
I mean they occupy a similar fanbase demographic, where there are lots of people that are like "metal today sucks, except Opeth" or "metal today sucks, except Dream Theater" and they're usually fat balding guys wearing a Sepultura t-shirt or something.

that and they both aren't really ever that heavy at all even when they're trying to be but that goes double for Dream Theater.

about Scurrilous: my problem with Scurrilous that it is way way more technical, up-tempo and proggy than any of the other albums, but at the same time almost nothing stands out. It's just a bunch of fast riffs with falsetto wailing over them. Sure, you could describe any Protest album that way, but the older songs were always going somewhere interesting even if the changes were somewhat random like the little cat breakdown in Wretch or the false-ending of Bloodmeat. Literally the most memorable part of Scurillous is that section (can't remember which song) that is more or less ripped off from Bloodmeat. That or the "and all the boys jerking off, IN PRIVATE ON THE INTERNEEEEEEEET" line. Yeesh.

Well fanbase =/= similar music style. And I've never heard anyone say that about Opeth, but I know a lot of people say that about DT, idk. Every DT I know that has said something like that doesn't like Opeth, minus Damnation. Everyone likes Damnation.

And not heavy? Have you even listened to Deliverance before? I mean, I know it's not as "heavy" as some of the metal you guys post on here, but it's still pretty damn heavy.

Idk, I'm not trying to start an argument here, I just want to defend my favorite band from being stuck together with the crap that is Dream Theater.

fair enough. I am a very casual Opeth listener. I don't think Damnation is that heavy, but I'll concede on your other points. My favorite is Blackwater Park. Either way, they're a better band than Dream Theater, it's just some of their stuff bugs me in the same way DT does. Can't really articulate it.

Heritage was a good step in the right direction though, I think. whereas Dream Theater just gets ****tier and ****tier, Opeth is trying to expand themselves as musicians.

"high-stakes, intergalactic, extreme rock"

I know humor is just what he does, but being the essential auteur of Metalocalypse and Dethklok's 2 full-length albums already, it would be kind of nice to see Small's musical talent exercised in a context that doesn't involve song names like "Dangertits".

Rise of the Fenix was another disappointment for me. It's musically pretty great, but the lyrics and sense of humor continues to fall fat on its face. The self titled is much funnier and more musically memorable than Pick of Destiny. Fenix has some really awesome music parts though. That flamenco song is amazing. But I really really really prefer the sense of humor style on the self titled to either PoD or Rise of the Fenix

Ooh, I'm excited to hear new Diablo Swing Orchestra!!

So does yours.
Uhh, what?

anyways, listened to the new DSO. It's...pretty good. I'm not sure why I was expecting them to do something different, but it sounds more or less like the last two albums. Which is ok, it just bugs me when exciting and adventurous bands like DSO fall into a specific niche like they have.

also for some freakout Zappa-esque jazz here is Dan Briggs' new band Trioscapes. Briggs is a machine, being in BTBAM, Orbs and this band now as well.

gotta say, I don't think I've ever heard a sax run through a flanger effect like that.

OH YEAH, I almost forgot.

listen to Dionaea right now

Wait, was the use of "fall fat" instead of "fall flat" intended or not?

Also, new DSO is actually a bit different from old DSO. I think this is their most diverse in terms of genre use, though each song seems pretty much rooted in one genre (or one non-deviating blend) song so it doesn't have the chaoticness of their previous albums.

damn, son. Love it. Super effective bass guitar under all that plucky ambiance. Very cool. And the string exit makes me wanna hear what comes right after on the album's next track.

not so sure about the first half of that second song though lol. Was it just me or did the drummer sound kind of... off sometimes?

The first song was so, oh how can I put it, tranquil. The first minutes of it kinda remind me of that one Pianos Become the Teeth song, Houses We Die In. It has this mellow happiness that I just love.

The second song sounds like the very thing Behold... The Arctopus wished they could do. So horrendously chaotic, yet still holding my attention long enough until the song returns to the mellow feeling that the first song held. Just fantastic. Also, I love how the drummer is doing overtime in most of this song XD. I'm sold.

Then I went to hear one of their other songs. DEAR GOD, WHY DID THEY TRY TO RUIN IT WITH SUCH BAD VOCALS, AAAAAAAAAUGH!!!

Dionaea really reminds me of Psyopus. They also have the same problem that Psyopus does. which is incredible wild musicianship that is obscured by really mediocre vocals. thankfully Dionaea doesn't have TOO many vocal parts in their songs. the vocals in Psyopus **** up nearly every song to varying degrees. I think both bands should just go straight instrumental.

i get the majority of my music nowadays from bandcamp. what a great site. got me to finally start buying music again.

for older/rare stuff I will go to a record store but i really don't care for physical copies of music too much anymore unless it's a band i really really love.

if you like Battle of Mice you could try out the other bands those members are from. The vocalist is from Made out of Babies which was a awesome crazy noise rock band. I really like them, maybe even more than Battle of Mice even though it isn't as crushing.

Quite possible one of the best metal bands, IMO. I do admit that I like their older stuff much better (before the focused more on the female vocals) but still an amazing band.

"Your Gaulish War" One of their best songs.

Other bands that I like are:

Children of Bodom
Tristania
Sirenia
Draconian
Between the Buried and Me
Mortal Love
As I Lay Dying
Katatonia
In Flames
Chimera
Behemoth
36 Crazy Fists
3 Inches of Blood
Peccatum
Wintersun
Amon Amarth
Battlelore
Norma Jean
Bleeding Through
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God

I haven't been paying too much attention to newer acts nor attempting to expand my metal library. While I still love and worship the genre, I have been listening/looking for techno/trance music and such.

Old Chelsea Grin was decent, newer deathcore oriented stuff gave them a bad name, and now they got 10x better and all of the deathcore kids are whining. No offense, but a dramatic genre change is what they needed. They sound much better than their last album.

I really liked Desolation of Eden, My Damnation was pretty good. Idk the single I listened to today just felt like recycled guitar parts with bad vocal work. And some badly incorporated keyboard/strings/cleans. I probably need to listen to the whole album.

speaking of Cattle Decap, their new album is pretty much the slammiest heaviest thing ever.

anyway, played a ridiculously fun show last night where we were the only metal band, besides Entity (they're ok). I vastly prefer shows with diverse lineups instead of being on a bill with a bunch of similar bands. Much more fun and interesting that way imo

the headliner was FERO LUX who are pretty much my new heroes after their show which was ridiculously energetic. Dillinger-worthy stage prescence from everyone in the band. and to me it's the passion and energy that is way more important than playing the music perfectly. the guitarist self-built an amp cabinet to make it extra large, for the sole purpose of jumping off of it with ease. it was a tiny bar so everything was getting destroyed, lol. it was really fun.

their music is good too so check them out!! they're on tour. if they come near you you should go, even if you don't like the music because their live show is ridiculous and they are awesome people.

I thought the new Chelsea Grin song was pretty interesting. It had a bit of everything. The lyrics during the clean vocals are so lame though lol. Doesn't really fit their image. I miss the "demonic brutality" feeling I got from their previous stuff.

My favorite part of the song is when they build up from clean vocals to a scream/growl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...FLG0y_tr_4Rn2PyfkPZEmsUg&v=TFAiOzgb8O0#t=152s

Overall pretty meh. It felt like a puzzle with a really cool idea but with misplaced pieces . Might like it more as time goes by

This is some nice stuff.

The naming of the noise rock genre reminded me of Gerogerigegege and their soft, touching cover of the rock classic "Boys don't cry."

Edit: Chelsea Grin seems interesting.

hahahahaha this is awesome. I love stuff like this. it's just fun compulsive music with no concern for convention. my personal favorite japanese noise rock band is definitely Melt Banana. Agata, their guitarist, is a humongous influence on me. he does not a give a ****!!! and yet as chaotic and abstract as his guitar sounds are, he always seems to recreate the songs perfectly.

http://youtu.be/84hExmh-g3Q

coincidentally they also did a cover of an old classic rock song XD
