Discuss your favorite metal bands from any different sub-genre like thrash, death and progressive. I'll start off by saying Animals as Leaders is absolutely amazing and to go check them out.

Well, I wasn't sure if you were one of those diehard wolf t-shirt metal purists who hate all forms of -core. just listen.

Hmm, well for me, I really prefer the classic stuff like The New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Thrash. My favorite band of all time is of course Metallica though I don't limit myself in music.

Sunn O))) is probably the least metal band I've ever tried to listen to. I can't believe they are considered metal at all. I guess all you have to do is dress up in hoods and turn the bass knob on your amp all the way up. And no I don't think droning guitar distortion at 40 bpm is very brutal or heavy at all.

Metallica are a bunch of douches and most of their songs are really outdated (IMO). I'm also not really a fan of classic metal in general, though there are exceptions. I love power/fantasy metal like Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. I also like early death metal like Death...But mostly, the stuff is too tame for me :/.

Here are some other modern bands that are pushing the envelope and actually doing something different and interesting with the genre. You might not like if you don't like experimentation, or things that aren't generic.

HORSE the band. Synth driven music. They also use an actual Gameboy to create samples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTJ2v0cpd5Y&feature=related

Rolo Tomassi. This is one of the weirdest bands I've listened to. They're kind of similar to HORSE but a lot more abstract. I'm not even sure what you call this type of music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjQDyhiiVms&feature=related

Dillinger Escape Plan. I'll be honest, I only just started listening to them after seeing them live. SEE THEM LIVE EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEIR MUSIC. Crazy as hell.

Metallica's first four albums were incredible. After that, it went to pretty good, then to meh, to terrible, to pretty good again with DM.

80's thrash metal is the ultimate metal in my opinion. Megadeth and Testament's early stuff is simply mind-blowing from a musician's standpoint. But I also love Black Sabbath stuff. "The Mob Rules" is amazing, and I'm not just saying that because I like Maximum Carnage.

As for newer stuff. Dream Theater is currently my favorite band, but I've heard there are better prog bands, so that might not be the end of it.

You keep saying trash. Do you mean thrash?

I'm gonna bring up Between the Buried and Me up again. Dream Theater was a huge influence on them, but I think BTBAM is a lot better.
I feel stupid now yes I know its Thrash I really dont have a clue why I spelled it Trash.. lmfao sorry bout that never have thought it was Trash just a mistake that somehow happened twice thanks for pointing that out to me I guess its because the h is kind of silent and I wasn't thinking when typing

Drone is a sub-genre of Metal influenced by early Metal. Metal doesn't have to be "brutal," it's always so fun to see someone bring that up.

Well, I think there should be a certain heaviness to the music to consider it "metal", and heaviness is more than "loud as **** and full of bass". I just hate drone and especially Sunn O ))) so I'm going to stop talking before I get really argumentative.

Sludge is one of my favorite sub-genres.

But enough about that, let's all agree that Symphonic Metal is the punchline of the entire genre.

They are metalcore technically, but BTBAM are untouchable. Every member are master musicians and they one of the most consistently technical, on-point precise bands out there. Not to mention, they have such a wide array of styles. They can play anything.

This guy knows his music. Thought I'd call them more progressive metal, they are still one of the most talented and creative bands on the market in ANY genre, the range of ability in this band is remarkable.

On another note, some of my other favorites:

Darkest Hour: If you like metalcore with a thrash twist, you'll love these guys.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=978-uD8UaRE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lh6fFYRP1s

Arsonists Get All The Girls: Definetely an original sound, I got hooked on their music from the get-go.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY1L8lY8qUg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa6KGreoNAY

Job For A Cowboy: Just overall fun death metal (lol idk how that makes sense, but it does), it's not too technical, but it is very good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-x95Q0SJfY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl-qaTmazB0

Whitechapel: Beautiful guttoral vocals, great metal as a whole.

That's just the tip of the iceburg for what I recommend, if you like these I'll be back with more!

Definetely I am in love with Metal music ^_^
Whether its Deathcore, Metalcore, and Black Metal.

Some of my favorite have to be

Cannibal Corpse (George Fischer FTW)
Cryptopsy (I want Lord Worm back!)
The Black Dahlia Murder
Killswitch Engage
As I Lay Dying
Oceano
Whitechapel (Definetely)
Suicide Silence (Kind of dissapointed with new album "No Time To Bleed" its ok though IMO)
Parkway Drive (Favorite Metalcore band)

I wish I had friends that listened to metal though -__-
I am currently am working on a metalcore single composed by myself with my brand new Line 6 X3 multi-effect pedal.

How can they be better then any band mentioned in this thread when its a metal band that doesn't even have a drummer and all they do is have the bass turned all the way up and let it just ring without any changes in their sound <_< this is garbage

Opinions are opinions. But some opinions are wrong:

and yet, they're better than most every band mentioned in this thread so far.
e.g.

But, yes. Sunn O))) is music. It's just not particularly interesting at all.

I've given them chance after chance, and tried to glean anything more than aggravation from their music so it's not like I just heard them now. They are a step above Merzbow in the "I know many people claim to like them, but I can't imagine someone really listening to them" category.

And their whole hooded getup is a joke. Is it supposed to be or are we supposed to get wrapped up in all the DOOM.

A lot of drone music is just ambient music with rock instruments, and a darker tone. I love ambient music though...hmm

ANYWAYS. BTBAM's new album leaked. It might take a few listens but it just might be my number 1 album of the year, in any genre. The Dream Theater influence has grown a LOT, but they do it better than DT has in the past couple years. Here's some highlights but really just listen to the whole thing when it comes out!:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttwBFIhlPnU <very heavy Mr. Bungle influence here

I love avenged sevenfold. I'm not too informed about genres so correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they're considered a metal band.

A7X is nu-metal, yes. They're pretty good, especially their older stuff. What makes me angry is that a lot of people who listen to them seem to think their guitar stuff even touches stuff written by Dave Mustaine or Tony Iommi. It's good, but it's not Mustaine good.

What? I'm going to get a list of all the people who think that and like in Jay and Silent Bob, I'm going to their house 1 by 1 and I'll.....give them brownies filled with laxative

Lol well this is actually pretty funny
I know someone who always brags that Synyster Gates (lead guitarist of A7X) is a guitar god
XD XD XD
Its pretty hilarious due to his humility of bragging about Syn Gates so much, because IMO, Syn is good with his licks but not a guitar god.
