I think people are undervaluing the usefulness of VC. Sure, it's better and easier and cheaper to play on an emulator, but think about what this means new-people wise- probably not a lot to most of you, but I for one have a couple of friends who have been refusing to play smash until now under the "It's illegal/keyboard sux and I don't want to go to the trouble of buying controllers/meh TV is better than computer defense."

Finally. It's been so many years since I've so much as laid eyes on this title, on a screen other than a computer. So simple, so fun, just as I remember it. Good times... good times, indeed.

I'll just stick to a emulator and online 64; no thank you.

However it is nice of Nintenedo to finally have it on the virtual console. It gives our new smash breed(young kiddos that play brawl) a chance to play some oldschool smash on their wiis. They prob. don't have 64s' or wouldn't know how to set up a emulator on their computer.

I'm sorry if this seems really newbish, but has anyone checked to see if it's possible to Z-Cancel with L in the Virtual Console version?

Thank you! :]

It is, though it feels awkward if you're used to L-canceling in Melee.

The virtual console trashes the **** out of the 64 version. N64 controllers are completely garbage. Even if SB64 was designed to be played on the 64 controller, I feel that I have infinitely more control over my characters with a GC controller.

This is why you go for PC gaming. Superior gameplay, superior graphics, superior controls, and it ends up being cheaper in the long run.

Oh ok. So tournament hosts are gonna start carrying n64 -> gcn adapters to every ssb64 tourney they host?
GC Controllers are completely superior to N64 controllers.

^Actually, this game plays great with the GC controller. IDK why, but it feels A LOT better than the N64 controller. But maybe its just me and Rubyiris that feels that way.

Anyways, I got this for a few reasons:

1. I don't like emulation unless it is for rom hacks. I don't think my computer could handle it anyways without slowing down.

2. To see what it feels like with the GC controller. One word: GREAT

3. So I can play all three Smash games on one system.

4. Save money so that I don't need to get 2 N64 controllers that work. Mine broke a while back.

So yeah. I'm having a lot of fun with this one. Also, it finally being on the VC means more kids can enjoy a classic.

I would say Classy Controller is better, but grabbing with using the Classy Controller takes time to get use to. I hate the GC controller is the reason I avoid trying to play most GC games, lol. I'll try this game with GC to see how it feels.

Like I said its simple to get used to. I would never practice on it, but its just something to have just to have you know? Graphics are smoother. But playing is no where NEAR comparable to the 64 controller. For instance it's sort of a ***** to DJC with Yoshi. Everyone has different ways to DJC because of where the 4 C buttons are located, but i dont see how anyone can use the C Joystick on the GC controller, and X and Y buttons don't flow too well.

Z (or L canceling) is not as easy as actual Z canceling.

Also the joystick itself screws with my jumping. I have 3 controllers (one loose) and tried them all and it feels jumping is very sensitive with these joysticks, and I never use the joystick to jump.

why lots of people love so much the 64 controllers, when its a proven fact that the joystick is a failure...?

is your brain made of brick?
LOL!

Really, wheres the proof besides personal experience? The joystick on my GC controllers, besides 1, are pretty **** loose, and looks hard to replace unlike the 64 controller. Also, the 64 controller joystick is cheap to replace as well.

So, Failure.

Lasts about 2 or 3 of months in perfect shape at most.
Not being perfect and having a flaw != failing.

I estimate the joysticks last something like 500 hours of SSB play before the deadzone starts to affect your play. When feeling out a joystick, it's easy to tell the difference between one in perfect shape and one in good shape, but for all practical SSB playing purposes, one in good shape works just as well.

It depends of the player.

In my case, i have sensitive hands and i demand controller precission to do well. Others dont bother that much about not perfectly precise controllers.
Hopefullyi'll get and try a hori minipad soon

On the other hand, i've been using PS2 and GC controllers for about 6-7 years and they are all still in perfect shape or almost perfect.

The GC controller works great, i didn't had any problems not even while utilting (I get more of that on Melee) but i would like to get one of those adapters so I can use my N64 controller.

This is why SSB64 on VC was good news. people who never touched the N64 controller shouldn't have any problems playing the game, also no more of that "I would do better but the Stick on the N64 controller is bad!" nonsense.

Yeah, I also prefer the GC version. Probably because I'm used to Brawl and Melee, but I find the controls just to be better. I also don't emulate because you can't have on couch multyplayer(I think) which I find the best kind of multiplayer

>implying you can't hook up your PC to a TV
>implying you can't use every type of controller ever with emulation

I gotta say, I am pretty excited about this because my friends and I love the original, and it is always such a ***** to find 4 working N64 controllers now days. They honestly are flawed big time. I used to work at a game store and every N64 controller we ever had had a crap joystick that was loose as hell and sucked. GC controllers have a much longer lifespan. I kind of hope that this boosts SSB64 back into competitions

I gotta ask though before I buy.. Can anyone tell me all the exact controlls on a GC controller?

Sure.

L/R are shield. Z is grab. X/Y/C stick are jump. Control pad is taunt. B is for special attacks. A is for normal attacks.

Basically, Melee minus C stick for smashing/aerials.
