I wanted to premnaturely end this submission round as our next job will be pretaining to our second DLC phase for Season 3. The spots ar ebeing taken up gradually! Here is our current DLC Line up. So, we will not be starting a submission round yet. Instead, we will be doing a discussion round. This means that even if yuo submit a character, I won't accepting it UNTIL the submission round. This time is to gather ideas, discuss potential ideas, and collorbotrate with one anither. The reason why I am doing this discussion round is...

Discussion Round: Surprise Character​

Our next submission is for a character who would be, more or less, a surprise addition to the roster. Now, that being said, we aren't looking for the Piranha Plant variety of surprisewhere people were literally like "WTF?!" We are looking to include more so of the Joker, Steve, and Sephiroth variety. A character that would surprise everyone, turn heads, and make noise just based on how "out of the box" their inclusion would be. Based on discussion though, I may tweak our final requirements so please keep that in mind. We are looking for a surprise that would be considered "good" by the majority of consumers.

That being said, once we get into submissions, we will be utilizing the following requirements for sure:

• Character must have been/be on a Nintendo console
• Character most be relatively popular within the gaming industry.

Artoria from Fate seems like the perfect WTF surprise character: her only Nintendo appearance is in the Fate/EXTELLA games and she could represent the more traditional visual novel video games as opposed to Phoenix Wright, whose games are more like puzzle games. Fate is an utterly massive franchise with some surprising Nintendo appearances and Artoria is among some of the most recognizable amongst them.

To be completely honest I don’t think there really are that many good characters that would be a big surprise and fit all those criteria to a T. Maybe a retro character that hasn’t been seen in a while or an indie games character would be cool and a surprise?

I'm not exactly against Bubsy but since other scrimblo 90's platformers are costumes or spirits (Gex, Earthworm Jim, Conker, Rayman) it would be a bit weird to have Bubsy just there when these are arguably more iconic.

I wouldn't exactly call Conker more iconic than Bubsy - Rayman absolutely and Gex probably, but Jim is generally remembered about as much by the same demographic and is less iconic to younger internet-raised demos; while Conker is more just a Nintendo fandom thing - not a good pick for a third party IMO. Bubsy's absolutely got a worse reputation than those other characters, but I doubt he has much worse if at all recognition.

Talking abt Conker I must say that I'm not saying that he should be DLC, he seems like more of a base game pick now that Banjo is in.

Don't actually think bubsy is a bad pick here. Not a character I actually want but would certainly be a surprise. I don't know how the majority would feel though.

Maybe 2B? She did just get a switch port so the surprise factor would likely be gone. A character from a big game like Genshin, League or Fortnite could proablly fit.

Maybe a historical pick? monkey Island, warcraft, sims, ultima. Something like that. Actually an EA character like shepherd could fit.

Honestly Geralt would be be a prefect pick for this but doesn't work for obvious reasons.

I feel like a Joker / Steve style huge game but not super Nintendo associated character is the way to go here. But I have no idea who that would be.

GTA fits well here, but I know that's a non starter for a lot of folks

Gonna put my two cents with Okabe Rintaro from Steins;Gate, the main reason why I think it could be a WTF pick is that a lot of people would be confused thinking that Steins;Gate is an anime and is "breaking a rule" while actually isn't. Saber from Fate also would fit that but I think the Fate VNs are more knowed that the VN of S;G

I use the front page a lot personally to check whether things have already been submitted or not (or if something has been deconfirmed in the past for a current job), this thread is obviously huge and it's difficult to keep up with everything we've added, so it's nice to have a central hub for information rather than forcing people to scroll through an enormous bunch of pages to see what's been added or not.

Reminder that obviously Namco would be out of the running as is Monster Hunter. Level-5 is also out of the running. A fighting game character is equally out of the running along with a big bad villain with a heavy sword.

As for the the requirements, I am open to comments on perhaps altering but, that being said, the last two are important. We need to have a character that’s appeared on a Nintendo system and one that is well known within the industry. While a character may sell within a group of people, will it garner universal sales? That’s one thing we need to think about. I have a list of potential characters that can fit and I will post it in a little bit.

I will say that Jonsey/Recruit would fit well in this job off the top of my head.

Basically separating from “off the wall obscure picks” that no one knows about for the sake of it being obscure from characters people are familiar about but wouldn’t consider them eligible for Smash. We all knew who Sephiroth is but never seriously considered him thus we were blown away. Steve was also popular but Banjo killed his chances to many people. Joker was a huge surprise for numerous reasons.

I do think Saber would count here. Series is huge in Japan, the mobile game is a huge money maker. I think a lot of people don't see her as a video game character (partly because of fate having a really popular anime, partly because of the debate around VN abd if they count as games.).

It's not a character I even really care about but I definitely think it fits here.

Imo the roster already has almost anything that you can consider "recognizable Nintendo characters", maybe Noah/Mio but their games aren't out already . Any other character I feel that could be more like a very big nitpick like add a bokoblin (that even then is an AT soooo).

And that's even if I would love to see characters like Calamity Ganon here.
