Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

On a more serious note, I've wanted Maxwell ever since I first played Super Scribblenauts circa 2009. :p I just haven't been too vocal about it because he's such a long shot, haha.
Same, exept the Scribblenauts Unlimited port to 3DS is what sparked my intrest. He's a super long shot, but there were those Mario and Zelda things in Unlimited on the Wii U.

Tracer would be cool but my OW Smash pick is Diva. Maybe I miss transformation characters more than I thought.

I was listening to this game's soundtrack while finishing up some projects and this song popped up I need Smash Bros to enable me to beat someone up to a remixed version of this.

Any personal picks you guys want that probably don’t have too big a chance to get in? Mine would be 9-Volt, who got a slightly bigger chance, but still pretty unlikely.
My sig is full of support threads for characters that are of suspect likelihood. Well, ARMS characters are guaranteed in the long run but we're unsure about the base game.

So with Pokemon Trainer back and no 3DS limitations, do you think we might get a newcomer that utilizes transformations? I’m just throwing the idea out there, I’m not sure if there’s any potential newcomer besides maybe a gen 7 Pokémon trainer that could utilize transforming between characters.
No, people have to realize that each individual character used for a transforming character requires just as much work to make as any other character. Another character like Pokemon Trainer would require the work of three unique newcomers to make, with each individual pokemon requiring the work of a complete newcomer (plus the additional work needed to get the complicated transformation process to work right), and even if you wanted three new pokemon, why tie them down to a gimmick that is already being used? Not to mention the balancing difficulties if you want to make actually utilizing the transforming gimmick practical over just using the character you like most, without crippling every character involved in the process.

Because of the excessive development workload they require that could be utilized on multiple individual characters and the unpopularity of transformation gimmicks in general, I'm pretty sure we won't see a character like Pokemon Trainer or Zelda/Sheik again; with Zelda/Sheik and Samus/Zero Suit Samus Sakurai didn't even bother reimplementing their transforming ability in Ultimate.

There was something I, and thankfully, another guy on reddit noticed about a way part of this was worded compared to what Sakurai said about Geno.

For Geno fans, this article seems to be a net positive for his inclusion, as the article says the K Rool Amiibo costume was a way to give him a short notice nod, almost verbatim to what Sakurai has said previously about the Geno Mii costume.

The reddit post in question:

Compare this quote from the article

"they had no idea that the character had any popularity. And that's why we got the Mii costume in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, that was more of a late, last-minute eleventh hour consolation prize, as a little nod saying 'K. Rool, we had no idea, this is the best we can give you right now. There you go.'
to Sakurai's quote

Sakurai: Yes. He's incredibly popular. Even though he's an old character, we keep getting loads of votes and requests for us to put him in the game. Even though he still isn't in as a playable fighter, I made sure he'd be in as a Mii costume so his fans would at least feel that they got something. "
Seems rather promising that Geno might be getting the same treatment?

---

Any thoughts on this?
I mean, i'm already predicting Geno so this only adds legitimacy to my predictions.

I’ve wondered if a Dixie/Kiddy Kong tag team character was scrapped due to technical issues on the 3DS, similar to the scrapped tag team Diddy/Dixie in Brawl.

Maybe we could get a transforming character on a smaller scale, though, so the secondary character only has smaller differences in their move set and is thus effectively an echo? Maybe something functionally similar to, say, Project M Samus where she can switch to an ice moveset that has a few altered moves but is otherwise the same.

Not that it’s necessarily a good idea unless we have just the right kind of character(s) for it, but it’s a lot more practical.

It's a stretch, but if Banjo-Kazooie get in, Split Up might be a thing. Not sure how that would work without leaving the other character in danger though.

So I see they don't label Dark Samus as a female at all here. I think I prefer that too, just for convenience.

I gotta hand it to them. When I think of all of the problems Samus has historically had, "she wasn't floaty enough" was definitely the top of my list!

Sakurai: "Let's see who won the ballot... ...Oh ****, K. Rool!? Dammit, we don't have any resources for him! Quick! Throw something together! I'll get started on the next game's project plan!"

It lends weight to the "Bayonetta was the top scoring of all the realisable characters" thing. They were expecting certain characters to score highly, but they didn't.
You mean kill the wabbit. Although we still kind of need him for Sub-Zero...

Hey, since Charge Shot can now be charged in the air, you can better take advantage of that every time you happen to get launched to near the corners of the screen since you can stay out of harm’s way for longer.

Anyway, though, IDK if that means DS’ actual air handling is floatier, or if they’re just referring to DS’ animations. If it’s the former, there goes another current “rule” about echoes, ahaha...

I assume it means the most literal thing which is that Dark Samus falls slower. I was mostly just trying to be funny, but I truly do not believe in the potential of the Samus moveset dark or otherwise for real. Just what a long and "impressive" history of mediocre performance...

Yeah, I'm definitely team D.VA if we were gonna see an Overwatch rep. Tracer is the most likely, but would D.VA be the second most likely? Genji? Thoughts?
