So I've been looking at venues at TCU, and I've come up with a couple of options...

The most flexible one would be the room called the chambers;

The problem with this room is that it's kind of small, and the desk/table things don't move, so it would be similar to the intimikill setup. On the plus side, there are multiple power outlets on each of the desks so setups wouldn't be a problem.

The other options would be the ballroom, which would be an amazing venue, except it's pretty much booked through the semester already; the only saturday that it's free is the Saturday before Easter, which means it's a holiday and the building closes at nine. The building closes at nine when school isn't in session, so after May.

Then there's four conference rooms right next to each other that could work, as seen on this floor plan

http://www.union.tcu.edu/files/BLUU_3rd_Floor.pdf

Miller/Hillel/Clinkscale/Zeidman

Each could comfortably hold like 10-15 people, but it's not really conducive to an organized tournament.

UT/Houston folks...what is your all's status?

I'm going through the process of getting Smash Club reregistered. After that, we should be clear to reserve rooms at UT again.

I'm trying to join the Gamers on Campus community at UTA. They are already doing a LAN/console party Saturday that includes Smash Bros Melee. It isn't for money or anything though and I didn't see a time on the add, but it's in the second floor of the UC building. Glad to see planning happening

EDIT: boo, they have items on for their tournament too. I'm going to see if I can be put in charge of setting up future tournaments at UTA.

That venue actually looks kinda cruddy for a smash tournament on terms of having room though. However, the multiple outlets spread at every desk will make setting things up extremely easy (no need for power strips etc) and chairs/tables are easily accessible. However, the cramped up spacing on the chairs (how far do they pull back?) might make for uncomfortable playing.

A different venue would be better, but that room is tolerable IMO.

my bad doh i never looked at the rooms till now.

i like the chambers except mt is right its a little cramped, but no more so than UT's endless challenge room (well, maybe a little bit) but definitely workable. not for a statewide tourney tho, it seems like it couldn't hold enough people comfortably (when they're not playing matches it doesn't look like there would be much room.)

however i see no problem with using the four different conference rooms. if this were indeed a statewide tourney and the rooms were decent sized, think of how quickly we could run the tourney. we could do diff sides of the bracket in diff rooms, have two rooms for loser's bracket, one for winner's and one for friendlies. or whatever combination you want.

either way, Kudos on finding places doh!

What about using the ballroom on the Easter Weekend? This would involve you *****es getting to the venue on time, and making sure matches get played so we could be out of there before they close at nine.

The way I envisioned using the Chambers room would be similar to intimikill2, so we wouldn't have setups on every table, but rather on every other row so you can either sit in the chairs or tabletops a comfortable distance away.

I could get part of the ballroom on a Sunday instead of a Saturday. I feel the 3rd that's not taken up (there's a standing reservation for Jesus people or something every weekend) would have plenty of space, and they are only there from like 2-7. How would people feel about a Sunday tournament?

Also, on the first floor there is a big lobby connected to an auditorium that would work. How do you guys feel?

Sunday would work fine as long as I take the following monday off, and seeing as it's easter weekend that would be likely. Seems like a spacious venue and could turn out really well.

And will there ever be an IT3? Where the hell is dilling? :/

Gamelot is willing to do smash again. It's also doubled in size recently. The closet as we all know it is now huge. They literally knocked down the wall next door to expand. Only downer is the collection of CRTS got sold off ages ago, so we would have to start from scratch for setups.

If I threw a pot bonus in (like $200 for OOS) I'm sure we could get people down here. Of course, it's a lot to put that money. I know I wouldn't be able to defend TX from out of state players, so we should put our money where our mouth is.

Next time we try to get a Melee major off in Texas, some of the top players should put up that pot bonus for OOS only. It'll give more motivation to keep the money here, no splits or forfeits, and we should be able to attract some top talent.

Why don't you just use the money you, SOS and cliff are going to profit from "running" the tournament as your oos bonus?

Also, why should we cough up money out of our own pockets?

Geesh, this again? FYI, every cent Alamo Gaming (my new company) has been put towards buying new equipment, such as monitors, tvs, and copies of games. Granted, we don't have any CRTs just yet (we are looking to buy some very soon though), but that's what it's always been dude.

Also, it's not even enough to make a decent pot bonus. $50 bucks isn't going to make M2K fly down here.

And Cliff? He runs a business dude. Electricity, air conditioning, and the new expansion all cost money. He has to see a return on his investment, or he'll go out of business like many other game stores have in the last few years.

I know you're on a different side of the fence, but get over this dude, we'll obviously never agree on this. You also seem to think I only do tournaments for money, when I've thrown dozens of tournaments for free or where I lose money.

As for asking players to put up the money, I was saying it as a dare. Quite frankly, it's no different to expect me to put up hundreds of dollars of my own money as it would be for anyone else. For example, iirc Darkrain put up a pot bonus for his tournament, Event 51 or something like that (in his Kansas City days).

In the end, it's unfair for one person to be expected to donate his money to the pot. I think it should be a community effort. We would all benefit from being able to attract bigger names to the tournament.

It's that or find a sponsor, and it's tough with Melee being such an old game.

We need hype. Melee is all East vs West with very few midwest guys. Texas is hardly known anymore. If we want revival, we need to step up our game and challenge either coast. Im sure we are all close to their level. We just gotta prove it to them by beating them. I can understand the feeling because I live 6hrs away from new smashers. But once I was able to prove my skill, RGV is now recognizable. Same will happen with Texas.

Even that crew cant beat RGV. IMO Best texas crew would be Dark, D'oh, Me, Cloud, whoever. its between jake, vash, oscar, tirno. unless wobbles joins then our crew would be stacked. Texas can even pull out a good 10 man crew if it was neccessary.

That's want I mean, we either put up a pot bonus or challenge them to a money match or crew battle. Sure we can talk trash all day, but it's another thing to get them to travel down here.

And if they do come down here, I'm sure FLT would be interested in coming back. He was asking me about any upcoming tournaments after he won Endless Challenge.

Anyone in the Kingwood area? I would love to go to a tournament hosted nearby... Totally for reviving Melee.
I'm from Kingwood, but I'm in Austin right now. You should contact Noc, he's prolly the best Melee player in Kingwood, but it doesn't exactly have a smash community, lol.
Any nearby tournament would be about 45 mins to an hour drive (aka Houston).

We should decide on a date for the first circuit event. The UT Smash Club is reregistered and active again, so we can reserve the room. I don't have pictures of the rooms in which we could hold the tournament, but it'll pretty much the same as the room in which EC was held.

You wanted my input and here it is bro.

Melee and brawl DON'T split the smash scene. It's a matter of choice when it boils down to the wire. If you want to play brawl, melee or both....totally up to you. Brawl and Melee are actually the same game with the same concepts of Directional Influence but brawl is actually rather harder to play.

Brawl requires more patience while melee all I have to do is gimp you and your gone usually the first or second time around. It's not as easy as I claim it to be but for most cases that's usually the deal. It's more detailed trust me but this is just my personal opinion regardless. You REALLY REALLY have to know what your doing in melee or you'll get ***** early and easily. Obviously the more you play melee the more your reflexes improve and thus the road to becoming a worthy melee player begins.

Isai Falcon

Melee is more fast pace and deciding how to combo your opponent and what moves to use is more easier to decide rather in brawl you really have to know how to space your opponent and look for opportunities. Patience is your greatest tool for brawl. If your used to rushing in and beating someone with some Isai knees your going to be heavily disappointed. The physics are also a fact between melee and brawl obviously. I'm not saying that reading your opponent is easier for brawl or melee but it's harder for me in brawl due to the physics and how slower the game play is. There are just more tools, glitches and factors involved in the game than in melee. It's easier for me in melee...just read your opponent, wavedash to their position and keep going.

Batou Falcon

This is what splits the community up. People want to play both but aren't skilled enough to do both or they are quick to decide which game requires more skill to play. This concept of internal conflict is pungent especially in cases like Mvc2 vs Mvc3 or Street Fighter Third Strike vs Street Fighter IV. The two games are similar but have different elements and tools for you to learn....and thus people begin to complain...which one is better? Which one requires more skill? Which game is best for me to spend time on? Also people love to troll on both sides o.O

Both games are enjoyable.
Just learn to have fun with both or the game of your choice.

As far as tournaments are concerned I would love to come back to melee tournaments myself. I love melee AND brawl....I can totally play both. In fact I'll give melee all the props in the world. My melee team...I was the team specialist. When it came down to teams my Roy was representing even against tough Falco, Fox, Marth and shiek players. Guess what i'm good at in brawl? Teams.

I"m all up for it. Post as many melee tournaments on my boards as you want to. You have my blessings and I hope this goes well for the remaining melee players. I'd love to host a smashfest with both melee and brawl players so we can all learn from each other....after successful variations of both, I'll host tournaments myself to help the revival.

-Batou

PS: If we work together to create a huge brawl/melee scene and support each other, Smash will stay alive a lot longer than usual. Let's do our part and rep both to the fullest :)
I'm sorry that I'm quoting an old post but:

You tried to argue why Brawl is a more difficult game, but instead provided your shallow opinion on the metagame and actually ended up supporting why Melee is the more difficult game.

You must have been incredibly embarrassed for making this post. God damn.

I haven't been active since I left UT, but I think now would be a perfect time to plan some tournaments for the summer. Nothing has to be definite right now, but a good plan -instead of spitballing ideas- would be nice.

What's your guys' take on coming to our Melee tournaments in Tucson, Arizona and we go to yours? I'm not talking about every single monthly, but perhaps we can switch off going every 2 months (every 4 months, we travel...every 4 months you guys travel) and we can have larger tournaments 6 times a year.

We've been getting at the lowest, 16, and at the highest 29 Melee players for attendance. We don't do Brawl at these tournaments, but I can make an exception if we have enough OoS players who want it.

I can bring my recording set up if need be.

The biggest players we have at our tournaments include: Axe, Taj, Forward, GamerGuitarist7, Jetfour, Tai, Silly Kyle, Rubyiris, and myself.

Let me know what you guys think!

I'd try to drive out there, it'd be a fun road trip. Houston is on the opposite side of the state though so it would probably be a 1-2 day trip depending on how fast you drive.

Well, we're planning on hosting some tournaments in Austin, which is something like 15 hours away from Tucson.

Houston's probably an extra 2 or so hours on top of Austin, so like 17 hours. Texas is freakin' huge.
