Ohhh, nice. Totally within budget.

If it had the 6870 instead, how well do you think, let's say, Skyrim will play?
Skyrim should run fine (even at high settings) on both. The 6870 isn't so much better than the 6850, but it's a lot quieter.

I can deal with noisy stuff. I wear headphones most of the time.

That sounds awesome, considering the ASUS G73 I just got last year for $900 seems weaker performance-wise to this.

I'll still be sticking to it though, since I don't have much of a budget right now. It'll be good to have a guide when I am ready.

I'm fairly certain the website I linked you to updates its "econo-box" pretty frequently. By the time you've saved the money, you should check to be sure the stuff you're buying is still worth using.

The CAD guy seemed excited for it. I thought the gameplay vids looked nice

Wish I had tried it out

So I'm thinking about getting a gaming pc. Idk how to build one though so I might buy a pre-made one. What brands would be good?

Fair warning: If you buy a pre-made one, it's going to cost you at least 2.5-3x the price as it would to buy parts/assemble one.

It's been a while since I even looked at prices for those...is Alienware still an option for pre-built? =P

Everything pre-built is usually grossly overpriced. =(

Even if you can't assemble it, do you know someone near you who can? =)

It's probably even cheaper to pay somebody to assemble your parts. But if you really need a site...my friend likes this one.

alienware is probably one of the worst options because everything they give you is super overpriced + they give tons of **** you don't need and charge you a large fee for a modest OC

Don't worry, its not that hard at all

Speaking of building, what do you think of my new build that i'm doing this summer
i5 2500k
GTX 560 Ti (inb4 jokes about my house burning down)
GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3
4 GB of RAM
Seasonic 620 W PSU
CM690 II case

The only thing i'm unsure of is the storage. Should a get a 1 TB harddrive or an SSD?
Help me! D:

Might want to get 8 gb of RAM. I've heard that's generally better for gaming pc's but idk, I still need to do more research.

Get at least 8. I have 12. I wanted to be future proof for a good 3 years.

I have 12 as well.

But even with all my stats, the game Minecraft STILL lags it

i would suggest get 8gb instead of buying upgrades in such a short amount of time

i was lucky and got 16gb for 100 bucks during a winter sale on newegg

also i would get the 1tb drive first and upgrade to an ssd later on

especially if you wanna make a gaming rig

So how does an SSD differ from, lets say, a 1TB SATA III?

I notice that most of the SSD that I see seems to have lesser space, like 512GB or something.
SSD stands for Solid State Drive, and it uses flash memory (the same kind of memory used in a USB flash drive) to store data rather than the magnetic disk that a normal hard drive uses. They have no moving parts, are less prone to mechanical failure, use less energy, and can boot up your computer and load programs at over twice the speed that a normal 7200 RPM HDD can. The downside to SSDs is that they are much more expensive than HDDs, and its such new technology that's advancing so fast that what you could buy today could be outdated within a couple weeks.

TL;DR: SSDs are faster more reliable hard drives, but much more expensive to

Hard drive speed doesn't typically have a negative impact on day-to-day performance, so I wouldn't worry about it. A 1 TB HDD runs pretty cheap.

So I'm trying to see if my laptop is capable of running any older games but my video card lists 2 things "total available graphics memory" and "dedicated video memory". Which one should I look at when I'm trying to compare my laptop specs to a game I want to play? I'm assuming its dedicated video memory but I just wanted to ask you guys just to make sure.

I've tried it but I never understand why the site says my video card isn't good enough when the site shows me 3 requirements and it appears my video card meets all of them.

It won't let me. I'll just tell you what it says. For Knights of the Old Republic II it says my video card isn't good enough even though it says all I need is 32 gb of RAM ( I have 1.7 gb). It also said I needed 3D (which I also have). Then it said I needed Hardware T&L (which I do have). It had checkmarks next to all 3 of them. My video card is Intel(R) HD Graphics.

Really? I thought SSDs wear down relatively quickly if it constantly reads/writes.

Ok I think I know why my laptop can't run kotor 2, its because my dedicated memory for the video card isn't high enough. So yeah my laptop can't run many games at all lol.

aside from the specific specs (the ones you seem to meet) there's just the GPU itself which doesnt really let itself be measured in direct specs, so the test just checks which one you have and if that is in the list with "good enough" GPUs. It's kind of annoying they don't explicitly tell you but thats just how it is.

unrelated: currently running 6GB of ram and I'm looking to expand it, but I'm not sure if I should go for 12 or for 24, the price is ~70 bucks for 12GB and about double for 24.

Still on Intel CPUs from around 3 generations ago? XD

IMO anything above 16 is a waste of time UNLESS you intend to do heavy-duty photoshopping/video editing/3D rendering/anything of that sort. If you're just gaming, 12 is great. Beyond that, it's not gonna return anything.

By the way, does anyone here use Dolphin?

There will come a day when my 2008 Macbook Pro will be useless. For now, it works enough for me. Medium settings for games like Fallout New Vegas is perfectly acceptable.
