I have a bit of a noobish question (but then again, I am a noob): what characters are considered tournament viable in Melee? The consensus I get for Brawl is that it starts at B tier, but I just don't know about Melee.

Generally, it's considered Captain Falcon and up, but melee is a game which allows people to really excel with lower tiers, so Axe ***** with Pikachu, Kage with Ganondorf etc.

tournament viable
Lol, Dogy had a big...satire, as he called it, about all this tourney viable stuff.

Anyways, my point is, who cares about tourney viable? Just play who you like.

Though, if you want to sell your soul, you could check out Fox/Falco/Sheik/Marth/Jiggs/Peach (i dunno about Falcon lol, Falcon is smelly.)

Any character from mid tier upwards is tournament "viable". You probably won't win a tournament with a mid tier, but you probably won't be winning any tournaments regardless (i still haven't done it). Play whoever you want, you gotta have fun. Stay above low tier, and you'll have a pretty decent character.

Edit: Actually, since the San Diego Smash scene is pretty active, I may someday go to a tournament, but I'm far more interested in watching actual good people play than playing myself ;)

Is there any potential for Melee to be played online, through the Wii? I saw some video on youtube of someone playing online through the actual gamecube, but I would imagine that it's pretty hard to set up and not worth it due to lack of players. I found some forum where they had a pretty interesting discussion about getting melee online via the wii... Melee is the only smash game that can't be played online. If melee was online enabled, I'd buy a wii just for this reason, seriously. I'm sorry if this question is "stupid", but I haven't found any other threads about it. Melee online would be amazing and convenient to find competitive players and have fun. This is why I love kaillera, I can play SSB 64 whenever and it rocks. I probably wouldn't even by brawl, lol... I'd just get a wii and play melee on there if I could :0

I believe there are some methods available, but only through a PC using the Dolphin emulator.

Online gameplay usually scares more competitive players away because of latency and the issues (read: johns) people will have.

I haven't heard of a way to play over the Wii however; let me know if you find out more.

I play IaMP every now and again and if it weren't for online play, I'd have no one (save a few crew mates) to play. Latency johns are stupid, anyone who thinks online play represents anything worth johning over is also stupid :bee:

I dunno, I have zero online experience with any fighting game, but I would love to try online Melee if given the chance and enough RAM on my work PC lol.

Ok, thanks for the thoughts. I have tried the dolphin emulator on kaillera myself, but I get lag with SSB melee on the emulator even without playing online... it's just too much for the PC to handle. I have heard very few people who have gotten it to run smoothly, and they probably have top of the line hardware to run it the way the do, so melee on the computer, at least within the next few years, probably won't happen. I just wish there was a way to play online on the wii, like people can with brawl. I play SSB 64 online (on the kaillera galaxy64 server) and it's a lot of fun, I just wish there was a way to play melee online, because it's really hard to join tournaments and find competition in real life without driving really far. Anyone live in the Chicago suburbs area or know of any tourneys in the area? There's a chance I'd join some time, but I'd have to do a lot of practice because I haven't played melee in a while :O I've been playing a lot of ssb 64.

Need help with L-canceling

I have been practicing L-canceling lately and Im just wondering do aerials need to be fast fall'd or do I need to wait until the aerial ends and then continue to fast fall L-cancel. Also is there such a thing called auto canceling. I main as falcon and I notice that the Bair can be canceled without hitting LRZ is this true.

you do not need to FastFall when L cancelling but i does make the whole process of aerials etc move faster

Auto cancelling is just when you land in the first few, or last few frames of an aerial, causing yourself to only land with normal landing lag, as opposed to the increased landing lag from an aerial, To L cancel properly you just need to hit L/R/Z as you are landing and the landing lag will be shortened, - it is more noticeable on aerials with high landing lag e.g link's down air.

Falsoms bair does auto cancel in s hort hop if you do it almost straight away after you jump and do not fast fall, if you fastfall you will not auto cancel it as you will land too soon

L, R, or Z. The best button is whichever you're most comfortable with using.

What do you mean by making your shines shorter? Are you asking how to cancel your shine faster? If that's what you're asking, you simply jump out as soon as you can.

there's a button on the top write of the text entry, looks like an 'A' like fading into black, just left of the button that says 'wiki'

I have a question regarding Melee.

Often in falcon videos i see people grabbing the ledge and popping up to sweetspot a knee or even a dair. I was wondering how they do that since I can only either roll back on, clamber back onto the stage and attack, or jump awkwardly into the air back to the stage. From ledgegrabbing position.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

drop from the ledge and then very quiclky double jump and hold towards the stage. Its called ledgehopping.

you can do it right after you grab the ledge with invincibility which is nice.

pressing down or away while holding the edge makes you let go. After you let go, use your double jump to jump on stage. This is called a ledgehop. What you are describing is commonly referred to as a ledgehop knee or ledgehop dair.
