The fact that there is no messaging system kind of puzzles me, I bet they will add one in the future. How will Nintendo be able to send stuff to the system like it does with the Wii?
They can use their Spotpass system to send messages in that notifications thingy. I received a message from Capcom thanking me for SSFIV.

Interesting. A 3DS only costs roughly 100 bucks for Nintendo to make. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.
Nintendo is aiming to make a profit right from the start.

IIRC it doesn't take much to make Wii/PS3/360 lol.
Microsoft planned to lose money at the beginning to gain saturation of the market. But now since they've found ways to reduce costs to make each console, they all now make nice profits.

A PS3 and 360 at launch both cost way more than what it took to make. And note I'm not counting any costs for labor or marketing. It just tells you two different tales about companies.

Nintendo gets their money mostly from sales, while most of their game sales come from first party games anyways.

Sony and 360 rely more on video game sales to get their profits.

^ I meant now, not on launch. Ugh, I really need to clarify my posts. :/

I don't think DS took much on launch, though.

My Nintendo 3DS review

3DS Review by Chain-Ace

Alright guys, the 3DS is on displays at several stores such as Best Buy and some Gamestop locations, so if you're still weary on deciding to purchase it, go play it there now.

I don't own the device yet. Today, after my computer course, I went straight to Best Buy. It was empty, and I went straight to the game section. It only had the Pilot Wings demo. The game itself is actually very solid, although I couldn't see myself ever playing it for a long time were it for PSP. The 3D is just that phenomenal.

I was eager to evaluate the 3D for myself. Let me just clear a misconception for you guys. The 3D technique is not the same as 3D glasses. For the most part, they are not going for a pop out of the screen effect. The technique that they use is much better and more effective in my opinion. The sense of depth is increased a whole lot. Instead of trying to make the foreground images pop up in my face, the foreground images pop out slightly, and the ratio of depth between those objects and the background becomes more and more apparent. This makes me feel as if I could actually jump INTO the 3DS screen, were I small enough. It's not like just graphics in the background with some objects sticking out. This is TRUE 3D.

The best impression that I can leave on you, although the 3D is a million times better than what you may think by looking at these, is from this little drawing I did.

Note, I kept the 3D slider around the center, but slightly more towards the top. My eyes didn't hurt me at all the entire time, but I did wipe a tear when I got back in my car. If I had a half an hour of fun, and had to PRY my eyes to go home, imagine how much fun an S tier game like Zelda is going to be? 3DS is the real deal. You may want to wait until the summer when the high profile games start being released, but this console is legit.

The control stick is nothing short of amazing. It is nothing like the PSP control stick, contrary to popular belief. It is very responsive, not stiff, it goes along with your thumb and responds to any angle you choose. That's really all I have to say about it.

The graphics, at least on the pilot wings demo, were slightly superior to the PSP. Then again, this is a low budget release title game. I can sense that the potential of the graphics are probably a little bit superior to the xbox 1 console, at best. That's really amazing.

All in all, I think it is an eventual must buy, although I will be waiting until the release of Ocarina of Time to buy it. Battery life isn't really a deciding option for me. Who cares. 4 hours is way more than enough time to play, and more time than most people even play a handheld console for the most part. If you are on a road trip, just turn the 3d down, I'm sure you will have just as much fun.

RECOMMENDED!

I agree. This is the most revolutionary thing I've had in gaming since the change from 32 bit to 3D.

I got my hands on one today, it's fantastic. The 3D works surprisingly well and I actually am rather fond of the thumbpad.

And I have a friend who is a Nintendo hater. Says the 3DS sucks because it can't run original DS games in 3D.

/facepalm.

The 3DS is amazing, I'm excited to see someone like Link/Pit in the 3D mode instead of my Tabby cat and Husky. If the new PSP doesn't use 3D, they're behind. It was executed perfectly and really adds insane depth to games. I hate to say it but, 3D is the future.

(I still hate 3D movies hough >.<)

Good review. It seems to me like Nintendo is always one step ahead of Microsoft and Sony. We all saw the dominating sales figures when the Wii came out with its motion enabled controller. Microsoft and Sony noticed and tried to cash in on the motion enabled controller idea with their own twist. Now Nintendo moved onto another realm. 3D. So far I'm seeing a lot of good feedback and now I'm just wondering what's Sony and Microsoft's next move. Will they release their own 3D technology or just sit back and watch.

...not sure is serious?

- Super Street Fighter IV (if you're fond of fighting games)
- Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (if you like games like Advance Wars)
- Pilotwings (if you like a game where nothing is trying to kill you and everything is calm)

Sony has been using 3D for quite some time now. Just that it takes a hefty investment to use it (buying a 3D tv).

I've honestly never had a problem with 3D glasses. Don't see the reason to complain.

In any case, for those of you who have the 3DS, I have a question. One thing I enjoy about the 3D approach (if done correctly) from movies and such is that the effects can really surprise you. I'm not taking about gimmicks that are constantly being used in movie theaters these days, but imagine an Axe being thrown, and it seriously looks like it's going to hit you in the face. Does the 3DS give you that feeling or what? Or is the 3D feeling just "inwards"? I know there are no such games out yet for the 3DS, but at least an opinion would be appreciated.

I should have mentioned that I do in fact know 3D in video games has been done before but Nintendo implemented 3D technology in its handheld in such a way that it almost revolutionizes the way we experience 3D. That is the key in which I think Sony and Microsoft might try to cash in on similar technology (perhaps a handheld?). Not just that Sony Bravia TV. I'm aware the PS3 has built in 3D capabilities but until everyone starts buying 3D capable TV's (which is nowhere near soon), the 3D feature of the PS3 is just a sitting duck. So maybe perhaps Sony will release a 3D enabled handheld just to keep up with the game. I dunno about Microsoft since they've never released a handheld.

Nintendo 1-up'd glasses, which allows me to say "Ew" to the idea of using them (usually I'd agree with you, but I feel like being an ***).

The only "surprising" thing I've had with the 3DS is in the augmented reality games. I went to the kuukuu clock and I didn't actually expect the bird to "come out" of the screen at me. But that's not what you want.

Wait until one of the two RE games.

Well, if the alternative to wearing them is not wearing them, that's a lot wrong.

LOL Wave wins.

The 3DS has proven to be the most innovative piece of gaming technology in perhaps the past decade. Sure it doesn't have super duper blu-ray graphics, but it has glasses-free 3D and the interface is just absolutely superb. Good job Ninty!

Well given it's two different types of 3D (one adding layers, the other popping out), we'll see in the future which one goes further.

3DS is indeed looking good, but at the end of the day, it's a gaming system, so I'm still gonna wait until some good games come out.

Ninja'd

Though I can't wait until a console or system comes out with some bad *** graphics and some true 3D visuals.

I'll probably wait a while on the 3DS. I already have LoZ OoT on the collector's edition and star fox 64 on VC so I don't see much point in buying the remakes unless there is actually new content. I'm tempted to buy Rayman though, because when I played the game as a child I didn't know what I was doing so I sold the game. But maybe I'll enjoy the game since I'll know what I'm doing.

There is. Miyamoto confirmed that OoT is chock-full of extra content. Just google it.

In that Mii RPG thing, your T-shirt colour influences your magic spell and strenghts. For example, during the fight against a yellow shielded ghost, youc an break the shield with a yellow Mii. So if you're lucky in your hiring, you can probably start the battle with it. You can also have your friends change the colour of their Mii temporarily to help out.

Lol, I remember how bored I was one day, and made so many ridiculous Mii characters. Morpheus, Mike Shinoda, George Bush, George Lopez....good times.

Their 3D TV's still require classes, right?

Eww.
You need to take classes to watch 3dtv!?!?!? :awesome:

BTW I did get a chance to play Killzone 3 in 3d at MLG DC last year and it was amazing......I wouldn't buy a 3dtv just for that tho :awesome:

I will probably visit a gamestop/bestbuy soon to check out the 3ds....but like many others, I WANT GAMES!!!

3DS takes a while to turn on, wait 254234 more days and it might finally boot up.

I thought mine was defective or uncharged too, then 10 seconds later it actually turned on and I was all "WTF"

It is funny how so many people want the 3DS but will wait until games come out. According to the numbers most people have bought the 3DS without a game. 40-60% of people who own a 3DS don't have any games for it. One person told me that they probably bought pokemon or other DS games to play on their 3DS.
