My Nintendo 3DS review
3DS Review by Chain-Ace
Alright guys, the 3DS is on displays at several stores such as Best Buy and some Gamestop locations, so if you're still weary on deciding to purchase it, go play it there now.
I don't own the device yet. Today, after my computer course, I went straight to Best Buy. It was empty, and I went straight to the game section. It only had the Pilot Wings demo. The game itself is actually very solid, although I couldn't see myself ever playing it for a long time were it for PSP. The 3D is just that phenomenal.
I was eager to evaluate the 3D for myself. Let me just clear a misconception for you guys. The 3D technique is not the same as 3D glasses. For the most part, they are not going for a pop out of the screen effect. The technique that they use is much better and more effective in my opinion. The sense of depth is increased a whole lot. Instead of trying to make the foreground images pop up in my face, the foreground images pop out slightly, and the ratio of depth between those objects and the background becomes more and more apparent. This makes me feel as if I could actually jump INTO the 3DS screen, were I small enough. It's not like just graphics in the background with some objects sticking out. This is TRUE 3D.
The best impression that I can leave on you, although the 3D is a million times better than what you may think by looking at these, is from this little drawing I did.
Note, I kept the 3D slider around the center, but slightly more towards the top. My eyes didn't hurt me at all the entire time, but I did wipe a tear when I got back in my car. If I had a half an hour of fun, and had to PRY my eyes to go home, imagine how much fun an S tier game like Zelda is going to be? 3DS is the real deal. You may want to wait until the summer when the high profile games start being released, but this console is legit.
The control stick is nothing short of amazing. It is nothing like the PSP control stick, contrary to popular belief. It is very responsive, not stiff, it goes along with your thumb and responds to any angle you choose. That's really all I have to say about it.
The graphics, at least on the pilot wings demo, were slightly superior to the PSP. Then again, this is a low budget release title game. I can sense that the potential of the graphics are probably a little bit superior to the xbox 1 console, at best. That's really amazing.
All in all, I think it is an eventual must buy, although I will be waiting until the release of Ocarina of Time to buy it. Battery life isn't really a deciding option for me. Who cares. 4 hours is way more than enough time to play, and more time than most people even play a handheld console for the most part. If you are on a road trip, just turn the 3d down, I'm sure you will have just as much fun.
