Literally the most confident I am in a third party series returning after the “big four” of
.
The treatment of Castlevania is actually very comparable to Mega Man IMO - and is of similar historical impact. The team clearly has a deep love for it, going as far as to give it a surplus of new music and some perks that you don’t often see from third party series such as an item and a second character(ish) out the gate. Not to mention it was a base game add, and Konami seems more than satisfied just dishing out their series without strings attached. One of the third parties not to get a DLC newcomer, so there obviously isn’t any special condition and I doubt much has changed since then.
People undersell Konami’s cooperation. Yes, the company sucks. But Nintendo clearly doesn’t care and this obviously does not make it harder to collaborate with them. Plus… these guys were actually added because of the ballot, so not only all that other stuff but they are considered popular, fan favorite newcomers. Unsure if their playtime correlates with this (probably not tbh) but regardless. Fan demanded additions, popular among the Smash team, easy to get back, deep history with Nintendo, more content than virtually any other third party series… come on.
And about getting new games… look, if it didn’t matter then it doesn’t really matter now. People aren’t judging Mega Man too critically on this front either, and he’s almost always retained, so I hope that isn’t the excuse. Honestly relevance used as a sticking point for characters who have already jumped this hurdle like K. Rool doesn’t make sense to me. Yeah the roster will be smaller but why are they suddenly gonna care about this now after they just proved it doesn’t matter? Popularity, legacy, uniqueness etc can all trump this and for many characters it clearly has.
