To be fair "Dracula's Castle" has a whole bunch of visually different stages within it.

And, in fact, the stage we got isn't even a particularly iconic location from any of the games. It's just kind of a random stained glass window.

No Clock Tower. No Throne Room. No Entryway with the huge glass windows.
The idea of it is actually supposed to be the final boss room. The long staircase leading to the highest point of the castle is like, an iconic setup for the series.

They just condensed the heck out of it so it works as a Smash stage.

It's actually the boss room at the end of Castlevania on the NES complete with the stairs...just suspended in midair, with the other wall knocked out, a couple extra platforms for spice....and it might also be mirrored from how it is in Castlevania, but I don't remember.

Honestly, I thought it was weird for it to be called Mario Circuit in the first place. This new name feels better.

Also, the only thing is shares with SNES Mario Circuit 2 is the jumping platform. The track's overall layout, the map on the screen and the presence of Shy Guys make it far closer to Mario Kart DS than it does Super Mario Kart. Even the karts driven by the Shy Guys are distinctly from DS.
Yeah that makes sense. I hadn't played Mario Kart DS yet when Brawl came out so I was always under the impression the stage was based on SMK's MC2 and that was ingrained with me until I noticed it in... was it in Smash 4 or Ultimate that changed the name?

Always cool to see more releases, but tbf this is more or less the treatment like 95% of the Wii U's first party has received at this point. Nothing against XCX, I'd take Elma over Pyra/Mythra or Noah and Mio any day.

And yeah, New Donk City was the kingdom that got the most spotlight back then, it being the stage was pretty predictable. Plus it's the one that showcased Pauline. It being a priority in Odyssey means it probably also had assets decided earlier than some other kingdoms, which would help Sakurai given it was pre-release when it was added to Ultimate.

People want Star Fox Zero on Switch?
Star Fox Zero would've been on the Switch a long time ago if it wasn't so intrinsically created around the gamepad.

Really? Because if I had to pinpoint a specific location, I'd say it's actually supposed to be Medusa's boss room from CV1.

The final boss room looks significantly different.

On the subject of Xenoblade Chronicles X music, I haven't reviewed this list since I posted it...holy heck, 3 years ago, but I was pretty through, so I think it's safe to say that I still think that this would be a good track selection for the game:
A lot of the tracks in this game have vocals by a bunch of different people. Vocal tracks are pretty hit or miss when it comes to including them, but I’m just going to assume we can have nice things and don’t have to reduce some of them to instrumental tracks/not include them at all. Also don’t ask me why a bunch of the song titles are just a bunch of random characters. I don’t know.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X Medley (Remix)
    • I feel like a mashup of the game’s music is going to become a tradition, so I’ll carry that on here. I’m not particularly fond of mashups though.
  • CODENAMEZ
    • An epic orchestral track that, IIRC, is one of the main themes of the game. Hopefully not butchered to fill less time, as it is 5 minutes long.
  • THEMEX
    • One of the first songs to sweep new players off their feet, this great orchestral piece has to be included, and not butchered to fill less time.
  • MONOX(Remix)
    • The title theme remixed to more consistently fit the context of a battle.
  • N周L辺A
    • It’s not a Xenoblade Chronicles tracklist without the day theme of the game’s world 1. lol
    • I don’t think they’d include the night section.
  • N木ig木ht木L
    • Noctilum’s day theme. I don’t think they’d include the night section.
  • N市L街A
    • New L.A.’s theme I could actually see them adding both the day and night sections here, though if they did the night section likely wouldn’t stick around for long.
  • 亡KEI却KOKU心
    • Oblivia’s day theme. I don’t think they’d include the night section.
  • 96-:rip(Remix)
    • Cauldros’s theme. Here I think they could remix both the day and night themes together.
  • z?2f0i1e2l0d914(Remix)
    • The cave theme remixed to be slightly faster.
  • Black Tar(Remix)
    • The normal and skell battle themes remixed to be a bit less heavy in the lyrics department. Otherwise I’d imagine it would sound pretty similar to the original.
  • Uncontrollable
    • The Tyrant theme, and the jam of all Xenoblade Chronicles X players.
  • NO.EX01
    • The major boss theme. Someone said that the refrain sounds like “they’re coming to chokeslam the humans” and now I can’t unhear it.
  • Wir Fliegen
    • The song that plays when you enter Overdrive. Once you discover infinite Overdrive, it becomes the only battle theme in the game.
  • Wir Fliegen(Remix)
    • This song wouldn’t actually be normally selectable; instead, it’s what plays when Elma pops Overdrive in the middle of a match.
  • z5m20i12r04a28(Remix)
    • The “welcome to Mira” song, and a battle theme in section 2.
  • z39b20co13mi01cal09
    • I think they’d only use the first section, as the second section is very soothing, and the first is Tatsu’s theme.
  • G-LOW-S→F.S.K.O(Remix)
    • The theme of the Ganglion. I feel like it would get a remix to allow the first part to fit the tone of Super Smash Bros. a bit better (it’s a bit more atmospheric than it is a battle theme), but it doesn’t particularly need one either.
    • This song is split into two sections and used for different scenes, and I think the second section will either be used to change the pace of the song for a bit, or cut out entirely.
  • RE:ARR.X(Remix)
    • A remix of a medley of remixes. The first half is So nah, so fern, and the second half is THEMEX. The remix would essentially just up the pace, and make the two flow together better.
  • Melancholia
    • It starts off relatively slow, and then goes unexpectedly hard. Interestingly, this is a menu theme, but you don’t stay in the menu long.
  • In the Forest <X→Z ver.>
    • I highly doubt they’d actually add this one, but I neeeeed it.
  • The Key We’ve Lost (Part 1)
    • The final boss theme.
  • The Key We’ve Lost (Part 2)
    • The normal Ganglion battle theme.
  • Don’t Worry
    • The “I jumped” theme. The lyrics don’t make any sense, but the song is a bop anyway.
  • The Way(Remix)
    • I don’t think they’ll include it, but I’ve got a personal connection to this one, so I’m including it anyway. The remix is to give it a slightly faster pace for the purposes of battle.

EDIT: The YouTuber got erased from existence so none of the links work. lol
Darn Nintendo Ninjas. Let us listen to your music!!!

Xenoblade is definitely one of the series that benefited so much from the Switch, but just about any Nintendo franchise with a game on the Switch benefited alot. Which makes me sad that we didn't get to see a new Donkey Kong, a Star Fox game(although unironically, the Switch version of Starlink, the version with the Star Fox characters, was the best selling version of the game), an F-Zero game and whatnot. I would've liked to see how well they would've done on the Switch.
This but for Rhythm Heaven for me basically, would've loved to have seen if the Switch's massive install base could've brought in some numbers for it since it kinda needs them lol
Speaking of Ultimate's new stages, I get there was likely no time to really add many on top of bringing back so many, but the lack of an Alola-based stage still feels off.
Yeah, since I don't think the Ultra Wormholes led to like other locations until USUM (so something like the Ultra Megalopolis wouldn't have been possible), I think using the Altar of the Sunne/Altar of the Moone would have been a good use of it in the meantime, since you could go between them using an Ultra Wormhole in even the original Sun and Moon after becoming Champion.

Alternatively, maybe something based on the Aether Foundation?

The room just before it has that same clock tower and crescent moon in the background viewable from the staircase, and there's even a dropdown onto the floor that leads to the room. The coffin is also there which I think means that the two rooms merged.

So you are right, it's not solely the boss room, but I do think it's based on that area from the first game specifically.

Technically both. It was known as "Mario Circuit (Brawl)" in Smash 4 :4pacman:

I didn't realize how much I liked getting new stages until we only initially got four new ones.

I mean obv everyone likes stages but with so few new ones, it was one of the very few areas in ultimate that felt a bit empty.

Obviously there's no mistaking a new Smash from a previous game, but stages imo really help define the game and help it seem "new".

I definitely would've been down to shell out a few dollars for some new venues via DLC. Almost strange Ultimate didn't do that after Smash 4 did. Personally I think that will be back for the next one, what with (presumably) retaining a full team after launch.

Hot take: we'll get a Xenoblade Chronicles X port either in the last year of the Switch, or the first year of the Switch's successor.

Given that it takes about an average of four years between the mainline releases of the Xeno games (1 in 2010, X in 2015, 2 in late 2017/early 2018, 3 in 2022), and that the remake of 1 occurred right between 2 & 3 (2020), it does seem like Nintendo wants to keep up the momentum of the series. With that in mind, I could see X being utilized to fill out the waning schedule of the Switch circa 2024, or an upscaled version being put out to show off the hardware of the Switch 2 around the same time. Thus there's XC3 now, XCX port in 2024, and presumably XC4 in 2026.
Damn, just a few months off from getting it right.

Very happy for Xenoblade fans overall. X was the last original & trapped Wii U game that was practical to port and arguably the most deserving given its scope. After seeing so much skepticism about a Switch version because of its size, it's nice to see that's apparently been dealt with and the game will (seemingly) fit on the cartridges. The series is now in a perfect position to really introduce newcomers to the franchises with having all the definitive versions of the four entries accessible on one console.

Yeah for the most part, DLC was self-contained to the Challenger Packs.

Which, yeah I get. But at the same time missed opportunity for new stages and music.

Oh, that's a coffin in the middle? I thought it was just a pedestal.

I know the version of the stage the Dracula Boss fight takes place in in WoL actually has the throne in it.

Wow this place sure got active after today’s news lol.

Wanted to say I consider Elma very circumstantial if Sakurai’s mystery project is in fact smash. She’s a pre-existing character so her getting into the game is not out of the question because she existed before planning was finished, what it hinges on is if Sakurai saw future prospects in her.

Personally I think she’ll happen eventually but whether it’s base game or not is circumstantial.

This was a thing?

Nintendo would really be in trouble if their old games were too big to fit on their successor consoles.

I don't see a reason to think a port will take precedence over new games. For Elma to have a chance, I think you need an XCX2.

Eh, barring the token "new Pokémon from an upcoming generation", the base roster focuses on what's current and popular at the time of proposal rather than what may or may not happen in the future.

Assuming the 2021 proposal is Smash, Elma's odds are dead in the water for base.
Though she's a potential option for DLC with this news.

I found someone the Nintendo Ninjas haven't yet. Here's the tracklist, but with links that work:
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X Medley (Remix)

This playlist has different names for some of the songs so I dunno which of the two are the more official ones, but I'll go with what each video says.

EDIT: I'm also going to hazard a guess and say that we'll never see any of the songs with guest vocalists, or if we do, they'll be made instrumental, but a guy can dream.

Totally fair point. I suppose my mindset was that Monolith was still using Elma in promotional materials and having her make guest appearances in other games such as XB2’s challenge pack. But you are right that he doesn’t really future-proof outside of Pokemon.

In that case that is true, definitely give credence to this. I do think she’s more likely for downloadable content in general.

Do we think this gives Elma a higher chance than Noah or Mio now? I wonder if we’ll be able to get much Xenoblade X music in Smash if we actually get Elma as a character. I’m guessing getting the rights to use Sawano music are really expensive, which is why we didn’t get anything in Ultimate.
I say if somehow we don’t get Elma at least she should be an assist trophy. And yeah i seriously hope there is some Xenoblade X music this time. I need this at the very least https://youtu.be/xOeb7StJlRc?si=VF3VWR1hda6hCBCX

I think a lot of that is probably dependent on how much fan support Elma got. I do agree that advertising shouldn’t be the only reason to include a character but it’s generally a good idea to include characters that a lot of fans have been asking for. I’m not entirely sure how much support Elma got or still has but I’d imagine she’s pretty popular.
I think she def has popularity, but she's definitely not one of the top dogs in that department, either. XBCX has always been a very niche entry to the series, so I think without an extremely astonishing performance from this current port, her popularity is not likely to overcome that. As has been said, ports like these don't tend to change the equation very much for older characters, not to mention this one is going to be put out in the dying days of the Switch and is therefore not likely to have that surprise jump in sales or notoriety. And when you compare Elma to other older characters, it would just be a very odd and niche choice in light of the other options IMO.

This list is reminding me how stupidly the XCX soundtrack is named.

The game is actually 30GB in size, which is too big for a Wii U disc. Switch carts hold even less data.
That said, Monolith Soft is made of wizards or crazy people or both, because they're adding content to Definitive Edition, and somehow it only clocks in at 15GB according to Nintendo's website store page for it lmao

People at Nintendo in general are compressions wizards, not just Monolith Soft.

It's insane how little data their games have when they tend to have a lot of content, so 32 GB of console memory is deceptively large... as long as you never buy anything third-party who may lack the arcane skills to cram so much in so little.

Thankfully, microSD cards are easy to get so memory is a non-issue but still, it's impressive.

Well... they had 32gb carts, several years to advance compression technology, and Nintendo's proprietary tools.

This wouldn't have been a point I would've lent credence to.

Beyond the obvious brand momentum timing (getting remastered Xenoblade games between newer entries) it could be that work was being gradually done on X in the past few years to carefully get the size down without compromising the graphical fidelity. Thus, XCX escapes Wii U purgatory, the Xenoblade brand presence is maintained, and the Switch gets one of its last notable releases before the successor consoles comes out.

It would be nice if either Wind Waker and/or Twilight Princess got announced for February to essentially allow the first three months of 2025 to have desired ports (DKC Returns in Jan, Zelda in Feb, XCX in March) but even without that it's looking like a solid final period for the Switch.

The size of carts is deceptive. There's always a portion of its memory size taken by basic things that allow the cartridges to function as intended.

A 30 GB game cannot fit in a 32 GB cart because of this.

It's a higher ceiling.
It really isn't. I looked at my own laptop to be sure because the logic is the same and the 500 GB memory drive it comes with has a whole 25 GB taken out by default just to function properly.

Whatever memory size a cart or memory card says is always fully honest, which means it also counts the bits that you can't store anything in because it has some essential stuff. There's no "higher ceiling".

It's kinda like how a 50 dollar eShop card can't get you a 50 dollar game because you still need to pay taxes.
You don't have to compress much if you're aiming for a 32gb cart in the way you would if it were a 16gb cart. It's a higher ceiling. It would be completely feasible to do given the advances since 2015.

Having said that, if a 30gb game couldn't fit on a 32gb cart, does a 15gb game fit on a 16gb cart? Because that's presumably what we're dealing with here.

I mean all you have to do is put her in Smash Bros and she'll have 5 times more popularity. And that's not even taking into account the characters who's Smash appearance practically became the reason for their popularity, like LttP Zelda, Wii Fit Trainer, Mr. Game & Watch and Ice Climbers.

Like sure, we definitely need to take things like popularity, recency and whatnot when taking into account how characters get into Smash Bros. They are factors that do matter because Sakurai does take them into account. But we definitely need to acknowledge that a good chunk of the characters in Smash have the amount of popularity they have now because of Smash Bros and it's giant fanbase.
Characters like Samus, Ness, Lucas, Captain Falcon, Wii Fit Trainer, Ice Climbers, A Link to the Past Zelda and whatnot would not have the popularity they have today without Smash Bros.

Depends on how it's optimized, I guess? I don't really know the specific numbers for that stuff.

But I could see them play it safe and put it in something like a 20 GB cart.

OK, so just out of curiosity, which songs from a certain represented franchise would you like to hear for the next Smash game? I already listed the music I'd love to hear from the Metal Gear series (and others), and I think I'll do it again, but a little bit different this time. Bold and Italics represent new remixes.

You could say that about a lot of candidates, though, unless they're someone hypercasuals already know like say Toad.

I just said I think Elma has popularity, but probably not enough of it to make her seem like a better candidate than others, given that her sole prominent appearance is in XBCX. She just barely made top 50 it looks like in Swamp's poll, which is consistent with that argument. And I don't really see any other obvious separators beyond "got a recent port and has decently strong popularity, relatively speaking."

The context of the discussion was just whether the XBCX port and her popularity would be enough to make her a viable candidate. What would happen to her popularity should she make it is not relevant.

They don't make Switch carts in 20gb. It's 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32.

If XCX clocks in at 15gb, I would assume they've been able to fit it on a 16gb cart, as using a 32 would increase production cost.
