I more thinking like

Imagine the stage is a relationship between two people (relationship is the loosest definition). The way the dating metagame has evolved is actually not that different from Smash. Generally (!) Men, in our society, are expected to approach while Women, are expected to camp the edge.

If you approach too aggressively, you get Dthrown into the friendzone (or worse) and are then forced to recover. The more attractive a woman is, the more experience she has with edge guarding. It is possible to come back but it takes some quick decision making and cleverness. Alternatively, you can wait a while and hope you have more stocks left. ;]

If you don't approach, generally women will time you the **** out, except there is no timer. Again, the more experience a woman has, the more patience she has and the better she is at camping. She is perfectly content to leave a match in a stalemate to go "play" against someone who approaches. There are of course instances of women who approach in the manner men are *supposed, by society* to, but our stigma about the way women are supposed to be discourages that behavior *"your character is campy and isn't supposed to approach" = that girl is a s|ut*.

The trick is to manipulate the situation by the edge and then react appropriately. Men, in our metagame, have to approach confidently but then react well or get strong reads. If you do this correctly, you start a combo and it can go on seemingly forever on a stage with no time constraints. Unfortunately, every combo has to end, either when it is dropped or when the players decide to stop playing.

The point is, before you ever get to do the fun part (combo'ing) you have to approach confidently and intelligently without getting gimped.

Btw, all super campy characters in Melee are women. Yes, Marth is a woman.
