Honestly, I was ****ing lost. I joined a little before Brawl came out (on a different account) and I saw all the high post count people and I'm like "These dudes must be really good!". I didn't understand anything that was going on and thus was only able to make about 50 posts for a few months since I don't like posting when I have no idea what's going on. Those 50 posts were in general areas and whatnot that involved common sense.

What was it like for you?

It's still been only 5 days since I joined smashboards, and so far, I've made some friends and enemies. I feel like I've made some intelligible posts and some stupid ones. That's my answer.

Hmmm...
-Loads of trolls
-Brawl VS Melee TO THE EXTREME
-No PG in the Debate Hall
-No Pokemon Researchers or Smash Researchers
-Brawl just came out
-No custom avatars yet
-Older version of premium membership was available
-The "If Smash Characters Were True to Their Games" thread in General Brawl discussion was the most popular thread in the forum (maybe)
-People were judged more or less by their join dates (lol! An 08er!)

That's how it was.

GwJ, how could you have joined before Brawl came out? Is this a new account that you made?

This site was made out of gold when I joined, and angels would sing every post to you so you wouldn't have to read them. There was no unhappiness.

Then came the 08'ers...

There was just one game and we held hands and sang and danced together around a campfire and everyone was happy...

Actually, my first post wasn't until 2009.

EDIT: Wow I was fastposted. See, it really was like that.

All I remember was there were like, clans for almost all boards.

I still remember the "Galaxian Enforcers" was some MK clan. I still remember all the ban MK things going around.

Actually most of this is when I was lurking. I think most of those character board clans were gone by the time I joined.

I realized earlier that I actually joined around the same time KOTH got busted, which upset me because I never visited User Blogs at the time, and couldn't take part in the lulz.

i joined a couple months after brawl came out and when the whole brawl vs melee topic was THEE topic at the time. when i first joined, i just posted in random rooms so i wouldnt be a smash n00b anymore, but once i wasnt, i started posting in stuff i cared about.

now pretty much, the only room i post in is either the debate hall or in blogs.

You should remember that this room is modded by an 08er.
I should totally bust your head for trolling me.

When I joined, it was still pretty much Brawl vs Melee, 08ers are dumb, MK is gay, Snake is gay, D3 is gay, tier whores are gay, gay people are gay.

I dunno, just seemed like a big whinefest and quite a bit of animosity, so I kept my head down and only posted where it mattered.

I kinda got to ease up when I found Blogs and OTL though, I was glad there was a place I could be without all the constant debates and whining, and rather just a place where people could socialize, and in UB's case, just talk about their lives or whatever the hell was on their mind just because they felt like it.

Despite what people say though about the whole "08er lul", "09er lul thing", I think this place is really welcoming and easygoing for new members. Nobody really cares about join date or post count. I mean it can be a factor, but never a significant one. Other forums are a lot different in this light though, and that's one of the reasons why I don't like forums, because they have ******** community norms.

I'm so close to being an 09'er.

My time here was mostly spent in the arena, goofing off with some rather bad players that were new to the game. I posted near everywhere, I was up to 40 posts per day at one point. OTL was pretty great. Then, shortly after I joined, a wave of 09'ers from the arena followed and did some pretty silly stuff. Threads were closed, enemies were made, people quit, and gays came out.

Good times.

After that, things went well, I suppose. I made friends, trolled a bit, made quite a few friends, became engaged to Teran, got modded, people left.

We could make a TV series out of my experience on this site.

Mad your post count is out of control.

When I joined this site was soo simple.
No character specific.
No video thread.
MLG was relevant.
Thundermistress was playing Sheik in some US tourney.
Gideon was still kinda smashing or at least he said so in his posts.
SNES was in the debate hall and if anyone asked him for his sources on something he would either tell you to do your own research or give you some million word page and point nothing out.

I joined a whiles ago but my first account got banned. I remember they were still discussing how to format tournament, video and character discussion threads. SWF has evolved a lot.

♥ My post count is my age. Deal with it.
I was focused on improving my competitive side of Brawl when I first joined.

Then the pool room was my first non-brawl-ish spot to go to.
Now I almost never go to the Brawl boards.

It is User Blogs. Pool Room. Responding to dumb questions in the Brawl Discussion.

I got a 100 posts per month going.
But it is not going to easily happen this year.

Uh...I think it can pretty much be summed up by...

GBD: "Sakurai sucks!" "No he doesn't!" "Stop making threads like these!" *lock*
"Brawl sucks!" "Melee sucks!" "I'm the better person for playing both!" *lock*

PC: Spriting was barely involved, a large wave of creativity and speculation with the 5th generation and Platinum threads.
Oh, and we had basically no active mods.

...I didn't really visit anything else at the time. >_>

But User Blogs didn't exist, Zelda didn't exist, Pit Stop was still there, Brawl hacking was very small, if it even existed at the time...stuff like that.

Original Premium still existed, custom avatars didn't exist, avatars were 50x50 to boot...there really wasn't a whole lot else that I can remember.

/repeating half of what has already been said

Basically it was Brawl sucks stuff when I joined. I didn't really mind it though, I was used to it from being back on the WoW forums. People are gay, yah gotsa to get over it I guess.

I didn't find peace in the boards really, I just went to the friend finder. Then I got curious about Toon Link, went to the boards, went to the Spam Chat, and found the best group of people on the internets. Pretty much the only reason I come back here so often really.

I was mainly a frequent on some of the Brawl boards and GBD, so I got to see a lot of the bad parts of the community. Overall found the good parts, stuck to it, and bam -- this is probably the longest I've stuck to a forum really.

Hey look my forum history which has barely anything to do with what the OP asked for.

Ok, summary I guess of what I was trying to say: it was brawl sucks, omg santi, wth tier whores, trolls, crimson king, and pokemon.

I definately remember the extreme hatred and mindless, zealous persecution on 08ers.

"Hey you're an 08'er! You're a ****ing ****** who knows jack-**** about this community and anything regarding Melee! **** off **** ******!!!!"

The avatars were small, and the endless Sakurai jokes is all I really remember.

Oh, and there weren't nearly as many mods as we have now.

06-07 was an amazing year where melee thrived and i fit in just fine with everything after posting vids and results from evo east, and announcing the first CoT as some of my earliest posts

Hmmm.... I'm still a newbie here, only joining in May of this year (but I'm dedicated :)). I know that I didn't have an awesome green name or title, I didn't get any attention and I had a kind of depressive feeling thusly.....

But now its September and its too good.

I made an account in the beginning of the year, but never used it until a couple of months later.
Not knowing how the site worked made me nervous.

Only came here because of SMYN.

Lurked some and found refuge in User Blogs and the New Members Fight Arena.

Learned my way on the Boards and realized Wifi sucks after returning from an amazing weekend vacation.

I also remember Barge, Heartz and Falcon being here alot, but not at all anymore.

Lol at Buzz.

Oh, those days. When I first came here, Brawl was in its infancy. Snake was the best character in the game, Pit's recovery was broken, Zelda was better than Sheik. Soon enough, MK rose up. But 09'ers, you have not faced anything remotely like the stigma attached to being an 08'er. I never directly dealt with it because I never posted anything dumb. I didn't even post for a while, and when I started, it was in generic GBD threads. But I saw a LOT of anti-08 sentiment, and agreed with a lot of it. I knew I didn't know anything. Then again, I'm probably 5-6 years older than the median age here.

I used to lurk the Marth boards pretty regularly. I remember watching them develop. Emblem Lord and his insane amount of knowledge, the rapid-fire match-up discussions (first board to finish), and the much stricter attitude towards idiocy than elsewhere.

I remember when there were original suggestions being made in the SSB4 thread. I remember MYM 2; back then, they only came up with movesets, not stats, Kirby hats, subspace stories, and Snake codecs. I remember the day IDC was discovered, and doop walking too. There was no Smash Workshop. I think they still counted posts made in User Blogs, but that might be my imagination. I remember the releases for all 3 tier lists.

I've seen the User Blogs room grow from a dusty, distant corner into a hub of activity. I remember having heated, hilarious discussions on multiple manliness tier lists. Also, a shout-out to Meta Mindgame Spam is needed. That was the first thing here that I actively contributed to, before the Zelda Thread really got moving. Speaking of which, I remember the Zelda Thread from when it was only about Ocarina of Time.

Other events worth remembering from my time here so far: April 1 2009. The very essence of epic. E3 '09 in the Light House was a blast, especially discussing the Nintendo stuff like NSMBW, SMG2, and Other M. Getting the Zelda Room. KOTH. The incessant Ban MK debates that seemed to settle down, only to be reignited again later. At least they seem to be dying out again. Brawl vs Melee was similarly idiotic.

It's pretty impressive how much has happened just in the 17 months since I've been around on here.
