Sounds like today was fun.

I would have done terribly in tournament today if I had stayed. I got a terrible headache a couple hours after I left and my supervisors were like servants to me until they let me leave early >_>

Who is Josune?

Is anybody from Abbotsford inspired to play Peach?

Aw Jakeypoo, don't beat yourself up too much, i was mostly just surprised that many people have pokemon cards. Everyone else was having a good time, and there was some really exciting matches, many of which no one expected. Oct 27th falls right into a pretty busy week for us (my birthday, two other birthdays, and halloween) so I can't commit to anything for the abbotsford contingents attendance. I had a great first time experience today, won a few rounds I didn't expect, and I think I did a pretty decent job of meeting everyone and getting friendlies in with most of the people there. I don't know what this next month is going to look like for me, but I definitely have the bug and want to be more involved moving forward with the whole scene. I especially look forward to beating more of you next time ;)

kevin: inspired to beat your peach, sure :D

Haha, I'm looking forward to seeing your MK getting better and better! But watch out because my own character is going to keep improving ;)

I'm excited to see our community expand! Shame I had to leave early, otherwise I would have played many more people including you Wilson (that is sniper right?).

Oops, sorry! There's too many people to remember :(

Oh and to answer Trevor's question... it's Peach's metagame to stale her only kill move (crown smack) :)

What happened?
I had scheduled the venue with Josune (the guy who does their scheduling) a couple weeks ago for today because the event calendar had this date blank. I book it with him, but a few days later, he comes back and tells me there was a Pokemon event going on the same day. ****ty, but we talk about it, and he tells me they can still accommodate us, so I make a trip to the venue (this is a bit under an hour each way for me BTW) to meet up with him and figure something out. We come to the conclusion that we can probably use the space normally designated for TVs that we typically use, and in the worst case scenario, we can use their upstairs balcony space (where we had the smashfest the day before P7). This sounds great, finally something working out.

Fast forward to this morning. I get to the venue a bit before 11, and it's pretty crowded. It looks like we might still have room though; one of the employees passes by, so I ask him if I can start setting up...and he had no idea there was a Brawl event scheduled for today. This strikes me as odd for obvious reasons, but he said he'd ask his boss about it, so I wait for a few minutes. Meanwhile, the few tables that are in that area are being moved around to use for Pokemon. So then the boss comes over, says we can't use that area, and directs us to a small corner with a shelving unit and 4 TVs huddled together so you can't actually fit people around each one - no tables or anything - and says that's what we get. I ask about using their upstairs area...and he says no. There was nobody up there. =/

After a few minutes, we get about 6-7 people playing there. It's already crowded; I was having flashbacks to the early points of P6, for anybody who remembers what that venue was like. Fortunately, we were able to get a table out of them, and it helped a bit, but it was still awful. We were packed in like sardines, and a few new players left before long, probably because of how stupid the set-up was. Running doubles was fun. =/ Eventually, the Pokemon event thins out, so we finally got to spread things out once we got the singles bracket running. After I got knocked out of singles, Josune came by, and I had a good conversation with him about what had happened. Apparently he had set up the original space for us the night before, and he confirmed that the owner of the venue really doesn't give a **** about us because we make less money for the store than stuff like Magic does, and that was why we keep getting shafted. It's one thing to choose the events that make more money for the store; when you're running a business, that's just the sensible thing to do. But there was really no reason to restrict us from using a completely unused, open space. On top of that, I've been getting bad vibes from the owner, and I really do get the sense that he wishes we would just disappear. =/

Josune said he was going to bring up what happened today at their next staff meeting. He is legitimately looking out for us, and that's the only reason I'm still considering Stronghold as a venue for future events.

Are you serious? What have we ever done to make him dislike us? As helpful as Josune is, I really don't think he can do much if the owner already has a problem with us.

Oh yeah. Everybody should shower before a tourney in case something like today happens again :p

There is this venue that Yakal mentioned to me. It's a little inconvenient by transit, but it's definitely not at Home Video level.

Last time it was Yugioh at Home Video, now it's Pokemon (seriously?) and Magic at Stronghold. At least card games shouldn't be a problem at Press Start...

Thanks for the birthday wishes guys =]

I loved home video, they had a great selection of snacks and juices to be purchased there, I usually ended up buying all the apple juice available everytime I went. It was close to my house, easy to get to, had a seemingly nice owner and was close to some really cool food places.

Home video was a 2 1/2 hour bus ride, which is why it was not super good. The venue itself was nice.

I'm sorry to hear about Stronghold being such a ****ty venue. Good stuff to H though! I'm very happy to see him again.

If the business owner was smart he'd find a way to keep both the brawl community and the card gaming communities at the same time. Jake, I would suggest having a one on one with the owner and tell him what's up. If he's indifferent about you leaving then don't go there anymore.

TREVOOORRRRR i saw your comment in that dgames game. i feel like i did a lot to ruin your tournament experience yesterday, so again, i'm sorry D=

but it wasn't really a "comeback" per se. i just switched to a real character ;)

Yoooo today was SO much fun :). Loved the sets I had with T-Block. H. was amazing!
loool i'm glad you enjoyed it. most people end up hating diddy when they first start playing against him. you should watch some high-level diddy-mk matches... pay attention to how much time mk stays in the air, rather than on the ground. you stayed grounded far too much, and it's incredibly hard to fight diddy like that.

Bahaha don't worry about it T-block. I had a lot of fun and thanks for teaming with me! The whole thing in my set with Caiden sucked but it wasn't a huge deal and it wasn't your fault. It's all good! :)

on the issue of the venue, it's been mentioned before, so i know we're aware of it, but moving venues comes with a few problems that need to be solved due to other venues not providing some of the things that stronghold does provide. maybe i'm underestimating just how badly we got screwed over here, but i think this could potentially be just an unfortunate string of events that exacerbated a problem (the owner's view of our community) that would otherwise not be crippling, so be wary of making a kneejerk reaction.

i mean, i'm not as in tune with the whole situation as most of you probably are, but it seems that the better course of action is to make more of an effort to rectify the situation with stronghold than to threaten to leave when we don't really have the power to be making that threat.

seller's market, yo

but by all means, look into alternative venues - no reason not to

well we wouldn't be 'threatening' to leave, the way I see it we'd just be leaving as soon as we find a place that doesn't repeatedly shaft us. We're only at stronghold right now because it's the best option we have, but by no means is it without drawbacks.

10 <3's for daz

kevin lets play next time yo!

Might as well also mention that some lady came over and leaned infront of dawnson and I during a pools match to turn down our volume, which was certainly not overly loud. That's pretty disrespectful for a venue we pay for.

I just realized I haven't actually been float cancelling correctly with Peach at all... bleh I'll have to put aside some time to learn how to actually do it... maybe I should try Melee to learn how.

yeah but melee is so easy, all I need is up air and the occasional usmash.

Brawl is way more technical, I gotta be constantly looking for QALs

Peach is one of the hardest characters to play in Brawl. Lots of work for little reward. She's definitely harder than Pikachu.

In Melee, Peach is the complete opposite of her Brawl counterpart and is way easier to play.
