julian, you live sort of close to my school. I can walk to kennedy/steeles, and bus from there. Thursday is my last exam, I get off at 11 that day
11... hmmm. ****, Ryan, I'm gonna have to get up early. When would you arrive at my house?

And for those of you that are commuting, I live in a pretty big subdivision. There's a bus that actually comes into my subdivision, which is good.

Good to hear that Bernard, will you be entering the ST tournament too? And how are you getting there? I'll probably take the subway.

Add me and Peter as maybe's for now.

Also, Josh:

They leave on the 4th, which is a Wednesday.

I can host on 5th and 6th, and maybe until 7th, so that's Thursday-Saturday. 3-5 TVs here, not sure how many we can use/will be used, but cubes are needed. Anybody can crash, there's room, you just gotta find it. Not sure on the limit, but probably 15 people, if even that many people are in.

Sound good?

Am I the only 1 who feels uneasy about the back to work legislation being pushed for to get York going again?
no =( doesn't seem like it's solving any problems, besides the students not having class. the union still has most of their issues unresolved or not resolved to their satisfaction.

also, there were only negotiations for 11 out of the 77 days on strike, i recently found out. makes it sound like york was stalling (camping, if you will =P) until back-to-work legislation could be put through.

and...from the sounds of it there's a bigger plan for multiple universities to go on strike in 2010. i don't know much about that one, but i think york is even more likely to strike then since this one went so badly. and that'd be around the time i want to graduate too =P

upsides of this strike:

- classes being moved later, into part of what is normally summer holidays. this is mostly bad, but on the plus side, smash at york will go on for longer, and york is much nicer in general when it's warm out.
- i might be able to avoid getting a summer job. =P that's only good in the short term though, since i have to get another job eventually, and if that's not this summer it might end up being during the school year in 2009/10.

I don't think the legislation is justified. >_> I don't think a university is an essential enough service to give the middle finger to a union of workers on strike.

i hope you two are applying to other universities. why you would want to risk York again is beyond me.

Normally I would agree, but at this point in time, I could care less. I've been out of school for over 80 days, but I haven't really suffered as much as other York students. The independent business in the Lanes pay $15 000 a month for rent, and their revenue has plummeted 75%. I feel worse for the international students here on a student's visa; they're paying ungodly amounts of money for Canadian education and they're not getting it. Not to mention that renewing a student's visa at an awkward time, which is what they'll have to do, is a big hassle.

I see where you're coming from though, as the back-to-work legislation is setting a new precedent in Canadian courts, and this could be problematic in the future.

At the same time, I'm not siding with the administration or the union, because they're both lying through their teeth about the other, so much so that I have no idea what the facts are. Are York TAs really the best paid TAs in the province? Were their demands ludicrous and outrageous, considering the economic times?

i hope you two are applying to other universities. why you would want to risk York again is beyond me.
You realize that you'll be out on your *** in 2010 as well, when there's a province wide strike, right?

Edit: Julian's tournament is going to be epic. We should play for a pot, $5 entry for singles? Oh, and this is pretty well made.

i'm probably the one suffering the least from this strike. i've been saving money on food by being at home all the time and making use of all the movies/tv shows/music i've been downloading. the only thing i could have asked for is more smash.

and if school goes into the summer...hey, york is much nicer when it's warm out anyway.

yeah, i have no idea about that either. it's all so hush-hush. and the whole time each side has been saying the other is being unfair. but the thing i mentioned, only negotiating for 11 of 77 days, makes me lean toward the union's side. there's no way they'd avoid negotiating that long when it's just going to end up with them getting legislated back. that is, assuming they knew that would happen eventually...not sure if that's a fair assumption or not.

what's the deal with 2010 anyway?

I highly doubt there would be a province wide strike in 2010. York TA's demanded to be paid as much as UofT TA's, I believe.
