Were there ever amiibo tie-ins to characters in the past?
I second this. Can someone figure this out?
As someone who was invested in Amiibo to an unhealthy level all because I just wanted ****ing Marth and Ness, I feel like I have the
slightest qualification to speak on this matter. Smash 4 released Amiibo in no particular order until the DLC amiibo, which came out in the order they were added to the game (being Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, Cloud (Player 2), Bayonetta (Player 2) and Corrin (Player 2). Ultimate released amiibos in waves of 3 + [some amount], and these happened to coincide with the DLC characters being revealed and/or released. Just to do a quick recap on the order:
Wolf, Ridley and Inkling released on Ultimate's launch day. Wolf is actually listed as launching the day
before, as he was an online exclusive (in the United States).
Piranha Plant, K. Rool and ICs released around Piranha Plant's launch.
Ken, Young Link and Daisy released around Joker's launch.
Pokemon Trainer, Pichu and Isabelle released just before Hero's launch.
Squirtle, Ivysaur and Snake released a bit after Banjo launched.
Incineroar, Chrom and Simon released a little after Terry's launch.
Richter and Dark Samus released ahead of Byleth.
It is unfortunately very hard for me to pin down
exactly which characters re-released alongside these characters, as some amiibo tend to be nearly evergreen in terms of their store presence. The ones I very specifically remember being re-released during this time are Pac-Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Robin and Charizard, as they were characters that I never saw in stores after their initial run so they stood out... but I can't make any promises on when they re-launched. Something to note, however, is that Cloud was re-released once before around the release of Smash Ultimate, if I'm remembering correctly.
I have a big problem with attaching an accurate date to mundane events and tend to underestimate how long ago they actually were, so if I were to take a guess like "yeah I think I saw Pac-Man with the Snake set", I'd likely be wrong. I will note, though, that if it's any help to future researchers, re-released amiibos during the Switch era have a red Nintendo logo on the bottom of the box, rather than the all white/gray one that was used in the Wii U era. It's very easy to tell a re-released amiibo with that in mind.
