Also, Xenother and Hitagi said Steve was in. So really does it matter if they said anything about Geno?

This was Xenother's response to us last year in November. So if there was something earlier, then it would contradict this statement.

Yeah, I was figuring this was going to happen. Janemba's been known for a while, and it was inevitable the trailer was going to be shown off

Maybe some could interpret it as Geno not being the big hit of DQ Nintendo was preparing, but it is also true that this may contradict those words.

The state of the Geno in terms of insiders:

ResetERA mods: N/A; I'm personally not aware apart from Jon. See: GameXplain.
Xenother: Said Geno was definitely not in, then later corroborated that he heard Geno from sources and stated that it wasn't him, mainly because the other signs pointed to the Hero. (Keep in mind that he also said Steve was DEFINITELY in and Banjo was definitely not.)
Hitagi: Nothing on Geno, positive about DQ.
Tansut: Nothing on Geno, claims to have only heard info about the Hero, but he could easily be wrong as he only gets some information, not all.
NoA contact (Sabi's former source): Heard from his supervisor that Geno might be DLC, posted the starling picture (which may or may not be hinting at him).
Vergeben: Heard Geno's name floating around, told not to take it too seriously and that it might be leak bait. This was over the Hero.
GameXplain: Jon was very optimistic from the beginning of DLC that Geno would make it. I don't know why anyone's stating Andre was sure about him, because he was actually rather pessimistic and thought Geno's ship had already sailed. Jon was on the Geno train and, as far as I know, has not changed his stance.
Any others I may not be aware of: Nothin' else lol.

The only group I was glad to see roasted during this speculation cycle was the Artorias bandwaggon.

Now, full respect to the actual one or two Dark Souls fans who I met back then who actually treated me right and shared some cool youtube channels to learn about Dark Souls lore.

HOWEVER, everyone else who bandwaggoned Artorias basically harassed DQ fans such as myself by spamming me on many Discord servers or forums to abusive extents while shoving the “glory of Artorias” on my face... just because they thought Artorias would save Banjo. Then Banjo came alongside DQ and those people threw Artorias to the trash can after harassing DQ fans and dissapointing real Dark Souls fans.

Say what you will about Steve... but I had a better time with his supporters compared to the cancer that was the Artorias bandwaggon. Nothing really bad against Banjo doh.

Something came to mind...With how protective Square-Enix is with their stuff getting leaked...what if they wanted Hero to get leaked? If the possibility of Geno being a fighter in the pass comes true, it might explain why no one claimed Geno was in. No one would think a company would get two characters in Smash as DLC.

Again speculation on my part.

I really don't see a great trade-off there. I don't think they wanted to leak a character from the biggest JRPG franchise in Japan. I just can't reason that, especially when Geno is used as the excuse why. I just think Hero was the poorest kept secret in Smash history. It may have caused an unintentional smokescreen if Geno is in, but I'm positive it wasn't some kind of 4D chess play to keep Geno hidden or something.

4chan is so much worse than GameFAQs and promotes lots of nasty stuff across its many boards beyond Smash. GameFAQs people are salty, dismissive, and argue in bad faith. 4chan is that amplified with incredibly awful personal attacks and often racist/sexist/etc.

Well, of every fan base in existence, I feel like we should be with Steve fans in saying that one character from a company doesn’t reconfirm another. Any chance we have for Geno rests on that, so Steve deserves the same credit/chance to show up later.

I don’t think Xenother/Hitagi are credible, but Steve isn’t the issue.

Believe you me, No way they would do that. Yet we said no way we would know who their fighter was months in advance...wait.
Jokes aside, just popped into my head and thought 'Man, what a surprise it would be if Geno never got leaked like K.Rool'

I honestly didn’t expect Sakurai to bring in other DQ heroes besides Luminary or Erdrick at all.

And as someone who always wanted the DQ8 Hero in and dealt with all the Artorias cancer.... seing him in the trailer as the first to jump into battle and save Luminary felt like a huge top moment of my life after what I went through.

Although maybe I found the DQ8 Hero pretty unlikely due to my pessimism, which was made worse by the people who told me he was never happening.

To me it seems like the biggest problem with the leaks is that some of the leakers may have their own biases that affect the information being leaked.

Because the way I see it, most of the information that’s ever been leaked doesn’t seem to ever pin point 2 characters from the same series or company.
Richter and Simon for example, Or Hero have 4 alts that were never really rumored months before their announcement.

Hence why a character like Geno may have slipped under the radar, because he could have just been deemed as leakbait by most since Hero was pretty much known for awhile.

If I’m not mistaken, earlier rumours said we might get two square characters so Geno isn’t too much of a surprise.

Me too buddy, me too. I was reminded of my love for DQ8 when Eight appeared. Such a good trailer.

Yeah, I believe Luminary and Erdrick were both part of the canonical "Seven Squares." I don't think anyone was seriously suggesting we'd get both of them, let alone 2 extra DQ heroes on top of them.

And to hopefully add this to the list above soon: 'Geno isn't happening.'

You'd think by now the Smash fanbase would stop it with the declarative not happening statements, especially since they aren't working on the game.

I doubt Square wanted Hero to get leaked, but one thing I do find interesting is just how much Geno was talked about last November. Even though Square had a reputation for being strict regarding leaks, insiders kept hearing the names Erdrick, Luminary, and Geno. Yes, there was a consistent stipulation that Geno was leakbait, but look how confident the insiders were about Banjo not even being considered.

We also know that Sabi’s original hint about Geno DLC has yet to be debunked. Geno’s Mii Costume is now missing. There are no guarantees until we see the final two characters, but I’m wondering if Geno’s story arc is playing out similarly to Banjo. With what we know now, if Geno’s name was being heard that much, even with the “leakbait” stipulation, perhaps a second Square rep (Geno) is not so :083:.

The 'Not happening' declarations should have died day 1 after Snake's reveal in Brawl, showing that nothing was out of the realm of possibility right off the bat.

But some are still pushing the 'irrelevant' argument, so maybe the fanbase will never learn.

Yeah, don't believe anything that comes from Xenother. He's wrong about so many things, like Steve in Smash Bros & Persona 5 on Switch. He just piggyback off of others. I still remember when he first started off with telling people to accept Steve is in over Banjo.

Tansut didn't get everything right regarding the Dragon Quest heroes. He mistakenly claimed that a female alt for Erdrick would be included, and that didn't happen. Take his words with a grain of salt
