I've talked before about how I played Super Mario RPG around the time it first came out, and I've rented it at least a couple of times, but it wasn't until around 2003 that I finally bought my own copy of the game so I could play through it in its entirety. I loved all of the characters and Geno felt like a very special imaginative character that was just going to have this one-hit wonder of an appearance in this amazing game. The game's ending is one of my all-time favorites, and it left me with that depth of feeling that people can sometimes get when they finish a really good book; it's like you've lost a friend and it's sad for the adventure to come to an end, even if it's a good ending to the story. Super Mario RPG is just that kind of world you wish you could visit and explore and get to know the place; it really puts a lot of depth into the Mario universe that some of us would have liked to get to know better at the time, since most Mario games would be about Mario saving Peach from Bowser and it wouldn't go much more in-depth than what Super Mario RPG accomplished at the time.
If I had been asked at the time about Geno as a candidate for a future Super Smash Bros. game, of course I would have fallen in love with the idea immediately, but I don't think I would have ever anticipated him getting as much love or attention as he has over these past decades. His appearance in Smash sounds almost as good of a concept as Smash itself; to me, Super Smash Bros. was sort of like "Action Figures: The Game" with the idea of all these Nintendo properties crossing over for the first time and fighting each other playfully. What amazed me during the Brawl days was the first time I heard about that Japanese poll where Geno was within the top 3 most voted-for characters and how I started hearing people throw Geno's name around the place. I was totally blown away by the support he was getting and seeing so many people who also love and remember Super Mario RPG was a really wonderful thing to see. It kind of reminds me of my relation to Super Metroid in that I had played it with my brother and sisters, but I've never heard anyone outside of our family talk about this game back then and wondered if we somehow knew about this hidden gem of a game (although really it's just that I've never bothered to ask anybody else about it at the time). Seeing that it's gotten a lot of attention over the years and is often remembered among some of the best Metroid games I was glad to see I was not alone in appreciating that experience. I guess what I'm saying is that Geno felt like he was this "really out there" character that you wanted to happen so badly, but wondered if anyone would remember him past his one-time experience in Super Mario RPG. All the excitement surrounding SSBB and the character ballots at the time was a lot of fun to be a part of, and seeing the level of support Geno was getting was incredible. Something I would have thought of as a never-ever character really was more of a, "not so far from reality" scenario. It's difficult to explain, but think of any character you wouldn't have imagined having any chance in Smash, and then seeing so many people rushing to support said character, even going as far as to produce flash animations, music covers, fan art and other creative media outlets where people would fly the Geno banner of support. It seriously was mind-blowing and crazy to see it all come together like it did, even though Geno wouldn't make the last cut in SSBB.
Fast-forward some years later when I had pretty much stopped thinking about it - and then Smash 4 drops that Geno costume on us, which was a huge sign of acknowledgement from Sakurai himself. It was like the message from so many years ago was finally heard in some capacity, and Sakurai even went as far as to include that "Beware The Forest Mushrooms" music for his trailer, which was a really nice touch. Of course being that this was DLC for the latest Smash game at the time, it still seemed like we would have to wait so long before another Super Smash Bros. game would ever come out, until that Smash teaser was dropped on us suddenly in March 2018. At this point I was just hoping at least Wolf would return, since I was disappointed that he didn't show up during Smash 4's DLC, but much to my surprise not only did he return but Snake also came back, who I thought was also just going to have that one-time appearance in Brawl. Not only that, but all of the characters are coming back, and then Ridley gets dropped on us at the end of the E3 presentation who I thought previously seemed near impossible due to Sakurai's own words on him. What an amazing day that was.
It was then that I remembered my want for Geno again, when it seemed like so much was happening for this game, which was only furthered by the inclusion of the Belmonts and King K. Rool. So much was happening for this one game that you know we all feel like this is the time for our supported characters to make it into the game. At the time it felt like it would make sense to include Geno, just seeing K. Rool and Ridley thrown into the mix, now is his best chance ever at getting into a Smash Bros. game. At this point, I feel like with Banjo-Kazooie's inclusion nothing but Sakurai's own will for this game could stop Geno from making it this time. As I said previously, it's been a long road indeed, and I don't know if it'll pay off in this game or another one, but after all of what has happened up to this point I don't want us to lose steam over supporting Geno - keep supporting him until his time for Smash comes true. He is after all a spirit that comes from a place all about granting wishes, and I trust Nintendo and Sakurai aren't tone deaf if they've gone so far as to remembering Banjo-Kazooie, who was certainly influenced by the fans that supported them. I don't know how word gets out there to Nintendo about characters like K. Rool, Ridley and Banjo, but they must know at this point about Geno if people are talking about it all around the place, and even so far that Sakurai would give us a Mii Gunner costume. I honestly hope it comes true this time, but if somehow he isn't happening as soon as we had hoped, we have to be respectfully louder about our support of his inclusion. We could learn from the endurance of the other fanbases that have benefited from always supporting their characters no matter what - even in the face of Sakurai's comment about Ridley, which amazingly turned around over time.
In summary, I've had a blast with speculation and entertaining theories, leaks, fun ideas for Geno or Super Mario RPG, and so on. The story of Super Mario RPG may have ended, but 23 years later maybe Geno will finally stop by and say hello to us again. Keep being cool Geno fans - let's hope the impossible is possible.
