it goes without question that melee players are more passionate about their game and just about all of us would fly out. thus, more money for MLG.

money is MLG's primary focus and considering games like Tekken are able to make it onto the circuit (and yield exceptionally sh*tty attendance) i don't think there's any reason not to add melee.
It's true that Melee player are more passionate, but MLG doesn't care about that! So far, MLG has been getting the numbers they want from Brawl since attendance reaches max entrants! You can try to convince MLG, but I doubt they will budge!

I think MLG just took a shot at placing Tekken on the circuit so they can see how it will turn out! I'm pretty d@mn sure you won't see Tekken next year at MLG!

Why can't they do that with Melee and at LEAST try it out and see how it goes? >_>
u dont know if they cant or not. maybe mlg is completely uneducated on melees underground scene.

we need to stop assuming that they are anti melee. we dont know that for sure. what we do know is that they are pro compitition, and melee is amongst the most competitive fighting games of all time.

if they already know about melee, then there must be a good reason its not on the lineup.

Chi-town, come at me
hi

just want to clear uup some MLG related things ive read

1.They don't allow for people to bring setups, they have their own(trust me we could use more setups but we gotta make due with the 20 we have)

2.The TVs lag, enough to where it even effects brawl play like between 1-3 frames(depends who you ask). there not going back to CRTs it looks bad for them(we have beat this point to death, nothing can be done)

3. theres is a 256 person cap for all the brawl events

4.@above: AZ and JV both work for MLG, they hired brawl players as refs for MLG columbus, and JV has said mutiple times that he knows you guys exist

lol pound

like eggm said i say screw MLG

idk why they bought smashboards if they dont even listen to their ORIGINAL members

thats what sucks they care about money. but the thing is that even if they put melee in it would still make the same amount of money.

EVERYONE knows melee is more fun to watch then brawl.

who wants to watch a bunch of mk's fighting for 25+minutes per set? hahaha NO ONE

melee is

1)better on time
2)attracts more people
3)CHEAPER THEN BRAWL in that the TV's/Cables needed and Melee is cheaper then Brawl. so they would save money there
4) YOU DONT NEED 200 refs because people wanna stall out every brawl match because its so freakin easy to do

melee is better for MLG, but they dont understand that because they dont play the games.

If the head of MLG was a melee player, he would take off brawl IMMEDIATELY and put melee back in.

its EASILY half as cheap to run melee, and faster.

So w.e screw mlg if they dont want melee, its there loss. melee needs to go to another company.

if VGBcamp were cooler to the players/more involved/not gay about whos on a microphone

then it would be perfect but theyre new and stuff so they dont have sponsors and all that

w.e

mlg is bad we have more freedom when its diy. more ppl, better tvs, better matches, more hype, better turnouts.

what we should do to hurt mlg is take brawl off all the big brawl+melee tournies lol. hurting the brawl metagame and thus mlg.lol. /evil idea.(we shouldnt do that its ****ed up)

It's never returning to MLG.

regardless of how much you love melee or whatever arguments you have for it being enjoyable to play and watch, potentially profitable, respectable, whatever, it is seen by MLG as essentially infeasible to add and maintain in their roster for reasons already stated. They're just not going to do it, can we please drop this?

I wrote a blog on AIB shortly after reading this thread:

http://allisbrawl.com/blogpost.aspx?id=73138

Here is a tiny excerpt:

It's clear that a game like Melee is a quality competitive game, and it will be around for a long time, at least by the persistence of the Melee community itself. A few other aging games fit this bill as well. With some proper marketing and focus, perhaps those in charge [of Major Gaming Leagues] can develop these competitive games and their communities into exhibitions of competition rather than technology, so that a game can gain an audience that won't be solely made up of gamers and competitors. It may seem as if leagues such as MLG already focus on the competitive value of the game, but their quick discontinued support of a proven competitive title upon the arrival of new technology says otherwise. If a game that has proven its competitive worth is developed and kept around, it will become an e-sport where those who don't play the game aren't made to feel like the only reason they should care is because the game is simply the newest thing on the shelf.

What I'm basically saying is that MLG, or any other major league, will eventually learn that it has to nurture a game as a sport and not just push it as an exhibition of new technology if it wishes to succeed in the long term. With that being said, a game as healthy as Melee certainly has a future within a major competitive gaming league, whether it be MLG or not.

edit: And LOL @ Gabe, my brother (Straight) posting for the first time in years on the first page. Didn't see that coming at all.

I think melee will be put back on the mlg circuit, when Street Fighter 3rd Strike gets put back on as well. I think a lot of the SF community acts like 3S is a more competitive game than super4 as well. so its the same exact circumstance. Neither is coming back, but when they decide to go back for one, theyll probably og back to the other as well.

I think it'll be too bad for MLG's image to put melee back on, especially since the whole 'Fox Only, no items Final Destination' thing

Street fighter may have had old games on, but i think SF is a more respected fighting game series.

Major League Gaming has been terribly generous to the Melee community. Let's go back to 2007 where MLG organized a 2007 Melee Grassroots Circuit. Remember that, well MLG didn't make a dime off that circuit. That was MLG telling the Melee community that they acknowledge, respect and wish for us to live on. Now I am not in the position to say whether or not Melee will be on the circuit ever again, but personally I would say no. It is not logical for many reasons but primarily due to equipment. CRT's are no longer made and MLG no longer uses them at events for shipping and production reasons. LCD's with component cables are the only alternative (2 frames of input delay).

Some of you mentioned Tekken, and yes Tekken may have smaller turnouts but Tekken also has support from companies like Sony, so I wouldn't get too excited thinking they would remove Tekken for Melee. It is even more unlikely to see them run Brawl and Melee together.

Keep it civil if this continues to be a flame war between games the thread will be closed.

and...?

it makes the world go round...
Yeah, how else are you going to pay the grocery store guys for the food, who had to pay the farmers for working on farms and stuff to make the food? If people stopped paying for food, people wouldn't be alive. Except the farmers because they farm their food, right?

Aka, it's a job. They need money to buy food to live.

Clearly you're not looking at the big picture then.

It's all about the money.
That's not fair to say at all, and honestly upsets me a lot. As I said MLG put their OWN money into the 2007 Melee circuit and didn't make a dime off it! They're clearly not out here to rob gamers of their money, they help communities grow.

They'll realize that old games can be better when StarCraft II finally comes out and all the pros still play Brood War. D:<

I've already gotten over this because Marvel 3s coming out and hopefully it'll be on te circuit because I really want the MLG experience, I would rather have it be with Melee, but at least I don't have to do it with Brawl.

pretty much, if you guys really want a circuit, you should just do what i have been suggesting all along.

add $1 to every regional and national tournament to the venue fee. that's thousands of dollars that can be put into nationals. like say:

2 regionals/month with 60 people. that's 12*2*60=1440/year. 5 nationals * 200 would be $2500 ish for prize money each year. and that's assuming way fewer tourneys than actually happen. for the 5 nationals, just put in 500 to the money for each one and there's your circuit right there.

it's not as lavish as mlg, but it doesn't also require a company backing. and of course, this would draw more entrants etc blah blah.

plus, we play melee for the love of the game. not money. that ain't

so many of the arguments being made by the people against melee on the circuit are irrelevant.

inability to purchase equipment to play melee is not only untrue (melee/wiis are still sold), but can be supplied by the players.

brawl having the bigger community at best means more forum posts for MLG; congratulations, only a fraction of those people are actually willing to fly out to the tournaments. it goes without question that melee players are more passionate about their game and just about all of us would fly out. thus, more money for MLG.

Mongoose, i could get into an endless argument with you about melee being a better game than brawl but like you said it doesn't matter. money is MLG's primary focus and considering games like Tekken are able to make it onto the circuit (and yield exceptionally sh*tty attendance) i don't think there's any reason not to add melee. in addition, melee/brawl come from the same series and so there would be many mutual players, meaning more entrants, meaning more money for MLG. Halo, Brawl and Melee would be a great lineup.
I actually have no problem with Melee being on the circuit. i just dont like that many of y'all want brawl replaced by melee without considering that we play this game and would like a chance to be advertised by MLG. melee already had that luxury. I would much rather melee be put on than tekken or something else.

edit: lunar- what etwist quoted is pretty much what mlg demos said.

i think mlg could at least allow a side event for Melee, like Evo did for Brawl.
