The leak hasn't guessed anything groundbreaking enough for me to really believe in it. But if Reimu or Kos-Mos is revealed next then I'll be fully on board as both of these characters seem rather unlikely to me.


They all seem likely to return unless they are coming as characters. Because why wouldn't they? As for either Monster Hunter or Lloyd becoming playable I'd say both have....okay chances. MH is a hot series right now, but their opportunity to come was alongside Rathalos to me. Tales is still a popular and relevant series, and of course Bamco is the company developing Smash, but he does face competition with Yuri, and I also can't help shake the feeling that Sakurai might be done with classic fantasy JRPG protagonists right now.

But Sakurai isn't the one deciding the characters.

There’s no proof he had a list, he just said he and Nintendo discuss it and he’s able to say no if he doesn’t think he can make a character work. The idea of a list was a theory or just an idea people assumed was the case iirc.

This is how Tales of Tempest rep wins idk I never played the game

Ok but for real though, I think a lot of Yuri talk has admittedly popped up because Vesperia on Switch probably got a couple of new fans and third to Yuri for Smash discussion seems to be Velvet Crowe who also seems to just be beloved by Tales fans as well. Considering both are recent releases on modern consoles, it makes sense why discussion isn't purely on Lloyd anymore. That's my theory.

This leads to an interesting question.

What are everyone's thoughts? Do you guys think all Sm4sh's Miis are bound to return or do you think Monster Hunter and Lloyd or just one of them will be promoted as a playable character?

Seems to be an unpopular opinion around here, but I think Lloyd and MH have a shot. Tales is considered one of the big three of JRPGs, especially in Japan, bizarrely lacks anything in the base game when even the likes of Heihachi was a part of the Namco roulette, and Lloyd has been a fairly popular request for quite some time. On the other hand... Yeah, you know about the Hunters already.

I mainly treat them on a case-by-case basis. Maybe one of them will be a fighter, maybe one of them won't. I'm not gonna disqualify anyone based on the Mii Costume alone.

Sometimes I feel like our version of "iconic" is a little out of whack.

Iconic is a meaningless qualifier. Either it's applied universally and largely in hindsight to every character we receive, or not every character on the roster is iconic, making it a feature unnecessary for inclusion.

Depends what you consider unnecessary.

There are characters on the roster that don't deserve to be. Iconicness may not be a deciding factor, but it SHOULD be.

Regardless of whether one treats "icon" status as a prerequisite for Smash, you still end up with the unsolvable predicament of trying to quantify something so subjective. No amount of discussion of sales data, adaptations, cross-references, or cultural allusions will ever leave everyone with a satisfactory answer. One person's icon is another person's "literally who?" and no attempt at definition will resolve that.

The fact that there will ALWAYS be some ignorant outlier doesn't mean it's not something that care be weighed by reasonable people. It just means there are always idiots.

There are characters on the roster that don't deserve to be. Iconicness may not be a deciding factor, but it SHOULD be.

Dude, who cares? It’s a video game, not a museum. I want to have fun with my characters not oo and aa at the roster all day long because muh iconic. Plenty of the most fun and beloved characters in the game wouldn’t abide by the community standards of who “deserves” it.

Like yeah, I think it’s awesome to bring in big names and significant characters just as much as I think it’s important to introduce audiences to new characters and introduce wacky new ideas that keep Smash’s gameplay fresh.

Ideally a character does both. I’m just really tired of people acting so high and mighty about who “deserves” it and only wanting “iconic” characters or quota fulfillment over fun and personality. Really don’t know why people CHOOSE to be that boring and actively limit the roster’s creativity, I really don’t.

And since characters that are both aren't actually in short supply, it's annoying when a character is chosen that isn't both.

Sakuarai can make anyone fun. He can't make a character iconic(well, other than as "that character in Smash", ironically). So there's no reason he shouldn't be picking iconic characters and making them fun.

He views Super Smash Bros. as a gaming hall of fame, and dislikes characters that don't fit his view of what that means (and by that I mean that his vision for the roster isn't the same as anyone else's because everyone's different), and as much as you may disagree with that, there's no changing his mind on the subject.

For some series (including ones not on the list), there are characters not listed that I would like to see for various reasons, but I'm not as predisposed to personally liking them, or the idea of them.

And since characters that are both aren't actually in short supply, it's annoying when a character is chosen that isn't both.

Sakuarai can make anyone fun. He can't make a character iconic(well, other than as "that character in Smash", ironically). So there's no reason he shouldn't be picking iconic characters and making them fun.

It's best not to argue with DarthEnderX on this. He views Super Smash Bros. as a gaming hall of fame, and dislikes characters that don't fit his view of what that means (and by that I mean that his vision for the roster isn't the same as anyone else's because everyone's different), and as much as you may disagree with that, there's no changing his mind on the subject.

The same can be said for a large chunk of the vocal majority. Sects of fandoms just work like that.

No need to be so strict on who should get in, if you got a video game character that will be just fun (you know, the whole reason peoples play video game to begin with), you're in.

Sure, other details matter more or less, but being relevant or iconic isn't the end of it all.

And this is why I'm holding onto hope for a Senran Kagura character. I don't care which one; the mainline hack-&-slashes are an absolute blast to play, and Marvelous has no fighter & is running out of options. Shame me all you like; it's my pipe dream, and I'm damn proud of the fact. I don't care how unlikely it is, I just think it'd be neat.

Right. But, again, "fun" is pretty much entirely based on gameplay. Which is entirely under the dev team's control. Any character can be made to be fun. You can't make a character be iconic.

I think the choice was good(though not one I personally cared about), Sakurai just failed to make him fun.

But that's not because he COULDN'T have been fun. Sakurai made choices about that character that he didn't have to that made him...accurate...instead of fun. Steve COULD have still been both.

Same with Hero.

Hmm...so playable Bill Rizer, but Hayabusa becomes a Mii Swordfighter...

I dunno...I'd be much more comfortable with the opposite. Playable Hayabusa, and Rizer becomes a Mii Gunner...

But yeah, I think I would still take it, because it means both series get repped. Which I don't think would happen otherwise.

I honestly wouldn't be mad if a bunch of my most-wanteds ended up as Miis. Hayabusa WOULD make a good Swordfighter. Bill/Lance would make good Gunners. And Kunio/Riki would make great Brawlers.

Hard for me to say since I haven’t really ranked my most wanteds, but seems like a pretty easy deal considering there’s not that much overlap between who I want and who I find likely. This holds doubly true if they make full mii costumes, which, despite how others feel, is something I consider a pretty good consolation prize.
