The one time I'm not here, we actually get New Spirit Event. R.I.P New Zelda character (well even more after the Ancient Costume).

I got to ask, The Geno thread back then speculated that the re-release of the Cloud Amiibo and Mario Amiibo could have been pointing to some Nintendo/Square content coming in the future for Smash, likely Geno for Smash

The Square character turned out to be Sephiroth, but do you think Sephiroth might have been planned to release earlier, and they released the Cloud Amiibo because he is connected to Sephiroth obviously?

It wouldn't surprise me if not for COVID that he along with Steve were to be last years E3 Double reveal.

I mean, two heavy ass hitters popularity wise. It makes sense.
And it’d be one year after the Hero & Banjo trailers too, esp since Sephiroth’s trailer is the “opposite” of Hero’s WoL setting wise

I don't expect any E3 double reveal due to the lengthened time frame for the pass as well as the more spaced out reveals.
Well I wasn't saying there was gonna be on this year, in fact I don't think there will be given as you already mentioned. The way I see it going.

CP9: March
CP10: E3/June
CP11: September

They're not really all that spaced out though. It pretty much went down like:
ARMS
...
...
...
...
...
...
Min Min
...
...
Steve
...
Sephiroth

Besides, if there is a double reveal it'll likely be like the last one where the releases are a lot more spread out. Banjo & Kazooie may have been revealed at E3 but they didn't release until the fall.

I don't expect those kinds of waits anymore.

And perhaps the supposed September reveal won't have its released until November/December. Something to consider.

Im happy to see people discuss Retro Reps again, sort of.

Im still on the Balloon Fighter gang, that guy deserved more than being glued to Villager's Up Special.

While I think he's less hated in the West now, Tingle might be one of the few fighters whose inclusion (over other potential Zelda reps) would be so hated that it might actually compel some Western Smash fans to apologize to the FE fandom for not realizing how good they had it.
Nah, i would gladly take Tingle over most new possible FE reps, including Lyn.

Admitedly, I would be salty that Impa got screwed over, but this alternative is pretty decent.

I think Tingle's hatred is more of an artifact of Wind Waker's version of him where he was seemingly some sort of criminal, the way he treats his brothers, but most important of all; the Triforce Quest (which is so awful they changed it for the Wii U remaster) doesn't help that Wind Waker at the time was really disliked because it didn't looked "ReAlIStiC" enough, so he became sort of a symbol of everything wrong with WW (which obviously is now far more respected)

then again, i prefer BF for our Balloon specialist fighter.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if Sephiroth and Steve were supposed to be revealed at the same time

I only imagine either one of them, along with Min-Min, or if Min-Min was meant to release earlier than June, Just one of them

The one thing I have to wonder is it seems Steve's release connection to Minecon seemed to have been planned. Steve was also said to be developed entirely in the Pandemic, though that could have different meanings, since I believe Japan had the Covid show up around January (but didn't get really bad till months later). That wasn't said about Sephiroth

And, It seemed TGA's Reveal didn't seem to be planned, since Mr. Dorito Pope asked Nintendo about potential reveal before TGA's.

I could see Sephiroth being Planned to be before Steve, and for some reason Steve was priotized before Finishing Sephiroth.

Though honestly I likely see the order being mostly the same, perhaps with everything delayed a month or two

True, but I haven't heard anyone complain that Falcon is doing things he never did outside of his Blue Falcon.
Yeah but he's doing one thing he DID do in the Blue Falcon: Go fast.

I'm always gonna assume his high running speed was something added when Generic Dragon King Fighter became an F-Zero rep, and not something he already had.

If you guys are suggesting Steve was to release around E3, with Sephiroth a commensurate time after that (and Min Min presumably a commensurate time before), we'd be getting FP9 at the latest around now, which would put the pack ending almost a full half year before the deadline.

That doesn't make a lot of sense. The reveals probably got shifted a few months down the line, but the releases were probably only shifted a month or so.

I could see a reveal at E3 but there's no way he would have released around then. We did get Steve and Sephiroth back to back but that's likely them catching up and getting back on schedule for the year, there's no way they would have planned things out so that Min Min and Steve would be really close to each other, and then Sephiroth would come way later.

Ever since Joker's release, we've been getting reveals/releases for fighters every 2-3 months, I'd assume the reason why it took so long for Min Min is because of the pandemic just starting around that time, so I'd say it's not that spaced out.

Yeah frankly the most I think happened release-wise is Min Min was intended to drop at E3 but got pushed a couple weeks past when that would've been, and Steve was supposed to touch down in September but came in October instead. If Sephiroth was supposed to release earlier, it was probably only by a couple weeks, like Min Min.

That's my stance. But even Byleth was seemingly delayed from December into January, and that was before things even really kicked off, so it's not an exact science either way, these targeted dates.

To my understanding they usually have three characters being worked on simultaneously, at varying stages of completion. I'm thinking that rather than begin the Pass 2 characters concurrently with when Pass 1 was wrapping up (after Banjo, when work on Min Min would've presumably begun), they instead had a gap between developing the two, finishing Pass 1, perhaps then taking a short break, and only then beginning full production on Pass 2, which is why it took almost half a year to get Min Min.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Going back to the whole double reveal thing, I don't think development returning to normal would really affect the likelihood of it since it happened before when development was going as expected. Though, I suppose we are ignoring one thing, and that's the question of whether or not we'll even have an E3 this year. Iirc, E3 had more problems than just COVID-19 last year.

I think the best time to reveal the next Smash character is at March, next being July to August, and the final one coming in November or December since FP2 ends before 2022 starts.

Wouldn’t You Like To Know?
In terms of the release window for new fighters.
March looks like a lock, with new amiibo and its timing after Sephiroth. An E3 June reveal as it has eyes on it, good timing, and preexisting precedent (not that it means much).
The last one is a bit of an unknown, Spetember matches timing, but aside from that we don’t have much. For all we know E3 could be a double reveal. If I had to guess it’d be around September or October. Unless we get individual DLC or FP3.

Individual DLC is more likely than a thirds fighters pass. Maybe at least one or two.

And from the latest spirit event, RIP hopes on Impa, she would be cool. But there’s still hopes on Hayabusa even though I don’t really want him that much.

SSF2 and Crusade are still available and are still worked on, this is just referring to their GameJolt pages among a bunch of other fangames, all being DMCA'd back in October.

I'm late to the AOC Spirit Event discussion, so I'll say it's interesting how this is the only Hyrule Warriors content in Smash as of now.

A Koei-Tecmo character is not in doubt, but rip Impa I guess. The main incarnation of her when people talk about Smash generally defaults to the Hyrule Warriors version.

I seem to remember FP2's Japanese end date just being "2021" without further elaboration. Can someone bring up that page so we can double-check? If that's how it goes, it could just be that December 2021 is a placeholder and an absolute latest date.
The date given at the announcement was by Dec 31, 2021, which is typical placeholder affair. I'm not saying that pre-covid FP11 was set to arrive December of this year. It could be November or October. I suppose it could even be September. I agree they probably chose that date to be safe.

But if the intended release for the final character was to be the likes of June or July, I don't think they'd have set the deadline that many months afterwards.

Since the ending shot of Sephiroth's Final Smash as seen in tonight's POTD is beautiful, what sort of final shot would you want for your most wanted's Final Smash assuming it would be cinematic?

There was a problem fetching the tweet
For Sora, I want him finishing off the opponent by slashing them with a storm of Keyblades, with two intertwining streams in the shape of an X.

Phoenix Wright, almost definitely not happening, but a unique “breakdown” animation for every fighter when they got caught in his final smash.

If Reimu needed a cinematic, it'd probably end with a storm of projectiles for Fantasy Seal

Adol would most likely have a cinematic made from multiple skills and attacks from across the series. Personally, I'd like him to end by rushing past the opponent and striking them with his sword, ending with a pose resembling is Ys VIII artwork

(Grovyle's FS would be Dusknoir pulling the other character through a time vortex, where they get beat up by Dusknoir, the Sableye, and Primal Dialga.
