My main hopes atm are

Axel Stone (Streets of Rage)
Medusa (Kid Icarus)
Doomguy (DOOM)
Nightmare (Soul Calibur)

if any of those 4 make it I will be so happy gonna be real

I already bought the pass, but I think I still would. Even if I hate the character I'm sure I could find something to like about the stage or the music

With E3 being a week away, I started to remember the infamous 2015 E3 direct aka the direct that single handily killed amiibo with one game. Sure it was the last E3 direct Iwata was involved with, but you got to give it props for one thing, it was the direct that helped improve future directs. Primarily the fact that they don't spend 10 minutes on one game anymore(looking at you Yoshi's Woolly World) having the games shown in a rapid fire style.
  1. That Direct did anything but kill amiibo, as they're still going somewhat decently today (although it certainly didn't help the amiibo's case)
  2. Directs afterwards still had those "10 minutes on one game" moments
    1. Case in point: someone at Nintendo thought DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power was just so good that they gave it its own spotlight

(Oh **** if LoL or any American character is CP10/11 - especially LoL - I don't think anyone here would be ready for the ensuing "NA vs. EU" debates that would never end.)
NA vs EU? LoL rep?

...Did I accidentally wander into the chat of a Worlds stream? :4pacman:

Exploration is one of the quickest ways to draw me in, but at the same time the only game I could really call open-world/Wild-like to a degree is XCDE, so I'm just sitting here taking notes whenever this comes up. Most of the exploration-focused games I've actually played are stuff like Bloodstained, Hollow Knight, and Ys VIII, where it's decently open but a bit smaller and given some degree of direction via metroidvania-style progression.

Also the fact that filling out the map creates dopamine and I dunno if the wide-open games have that aspect
Genshin Impact is a pretty good Wild-like too. There are a few barriers here and there, but mostly it's because the game is still in "early access" and the map isn't complete yet.

It could be Fortnite and I would still hype and gush over it and I wouldn’t be embarrassed in the slightest.

Also, this will be the first time in 10 years that I will miss an E3. Previously on Japan, it would be around 1 am so I would go to bed earlier and then wake up for it. Or just stay up and drink until the presentation. I was pretty drunk for the Banjo reveal and that was a blast.

This time though, I’ll be at work as I’m in the States now. I’ll catch it when I get home.

I think the issue with Western IP vs Eastern/Japan IP mostly come down to the way characters and...Well, "branding" is created. It's not uncommon for a Japanese studio to stick with an IP for years/Decade, managing to create a base and "brand power" not only throught the games, but throught their characters.

I'm going to take the exemple of Final Fantasy or even Tales of as they have this peculiar case of not even keeping the same cast between games, yet all of their protagonists enjoy a "similar popularity" between each others, beside some big outliner (Cloud/Noctis/Lightning for FF and Yuri/Llyod/Sorey for Tales of)

When one of their game release, or start marketing you can see that Final Fantasy and Tales of build their brand toward their characters, even before the stories. Whenever it's figures, merch, crossovers in mobile games or other games, novel, anime tons of stuff around the characters which help to see them recognizable, even to a more broad appeal audience, not only around the game release, but for years, once the game is release, those characters doesn't just "suddenly disappear" until their next game. Square-Enix and Bandai Namco keep them in people's mind with all of those things, they want you to remember them and it usually work pretty well.

And this is a complete 180 with how Western IP work for most cases. Most of the time, Western IP or Characters enjoy an appearance or two, with heavy marketing, almost holywood like before ending up dormant, their own company not talking about them, the devs and marketing focused on something else, before going back to them a few years later, with usually very mixed results.

And I think this is why the Japan vs Western IP stuff is problematic, and usually why...For lack of a better term, most, if not all of the most recognizable characters in the world are Japanese and why Nintendo is absurdely good at this.
Mario? Link? Pikachu? They're here and won't go. Nintendo Create IP, but make sure you always remember a way or another their characters, Microsoft does the same with Master Chief for exemple.

Rayman? Gordon Freeman? Doomguy? Crash?
No one can argue against their star powers...However, their presence throught the collectiveness and lasting impact is where it's hard, because their devs usually write a page for them, and instead of turning it, just ****ing close the book to write a new one, before taking it and opening it up again a few years later remembering that they didn't finish it.
I agree that western devs and publishers often don't push IP and characters in the way they should.

I mean, look at Sony. They're sitting on so many great IPs and ignore them entirely. When's the last time you heard anything about Sly Cooper or Jak and Daxter? And I don't mean just games, I mean ANYTHING. Outside of maybe a small cameo, I can't think of a single thing in the last decade. Meanwhile, Nintendo is over here with F-Zero, the IP they refuse to use, and it's still in Nintendo's thoughts. They reference it all the time and in huge ways too. I mean, Mario Kart 8 has oodles of F-Zero material.

In my experience, western devs are always moving forward, while eastern devs are willing to occasionally celebrate what they've done. I will say that I do think that some western devs are willing to celebrate their past successes. You mentioned Master Chief, but I'd argue Crash has had similar success since his revival. I could argue Doom Slayer is close, but I'm iffy there.

Yeah, I've got my eye on Genshin. It's just that... Well...
  1. My phone probably can't run it without draining all it's batter and/or turning into a nuclear reactor, and either way it seems like it'd be more comfortable with a controller
  2. My laptop is below potato level and can't even run Ys Seven - A PSP game, mind you, I will never not be salty about this - So there's no way it can handle Genshin
  3. My PS4 does not exist
  4. The Switch port is going to exist eventually but at the time of writing it doesn't exist yet
So I've got my hands tied in that area. That being said, E3 does seem like a pretty good time to announce the Switch version's release date. Or at least, that's what I'm hoping.

After watching a review of that new Ratchet & Clank game, I'm wondering something: If Ratchet makes it into the roster, would Rivet work as an echo (or is her skeleton too different from Ratchet's)?

I don't have a PS5 so I won't be able to play the game for a while, but I'd say she definitely works as an echo. From videos it doesn't seem like she plays different to Ratchet at all, so unless she has something different that hasn't been revealed to the public, she feels like a possible echo fighter.

I already bought both Fighters Passes and Piranha Plant, and I can't think of many characters that I'd hate. (maybe Bubsy, or Kiran (or one of the other original characters) from Fire Emblem Heroes, but neither one seems likely) At the very least, nobody who seems plausible or gets talked about often comes to mind when it comes to characters that I wouldn't want.

Just curious, y'all.
After directs, do you guys discuss whatever was revealed HERE? And do you discuss with spoiler warnings consistently showing up?

Or what?

I'd assume so - from what I've seen, they play the same and share the same upgrades. (that's how we handled it in the "making PlayStation All Stars 2" thread, anyway - some changes might need to be made between them depending on if both of them have Clank, or if only Ratchet has him, or if Rivet winds up getting/building her own version of Clank over the course of the game)

Steve was literally my least wanted character but I still bought the whole pass once Sephiroth was revealed. I just like having all the characters so I’d buy them no matter who they are.

Thats is true. But the E3 2015 would go into detail that wasn't really necessary imho. The Yoshi Woolly World segment comes to mind the most where a developed seemed to talk more about her hobbies than the actually game itself

I think they usually lock this thread when Directs happen so that discussion moves to Social, and once the Direct is over they reopen this thread and spoilers are fair game.

I say I think because I've never gone to Social so what usually happens is I come back to this thread to find ~6 pages, half of which are variations on "Five minutes left you guys!!!"

Social thread? Nah, it's put in a dedicated E3 Direct thread.

When E3 draws near, they'll make a dedicated thread, where all hell will break loose in, so go in expecting spoilers.

Less than 10 minutes until the last potential spirit event before the week of E3. This could be the last time for a character to be deconfirmed before we end up knowingthe entire Smash roster if it is indeed going to be a dual reveal... or it will be a spirit event for characters with big noses.
It's more than likely a tourney event this week.

Feel free to quote this if it ends up being a Ayumi deconfirm or something lol
