Late to look back on the topic but still relevant since it's the first day. With the new year for 2021, here's some notable anniversaries to look out for both in general and for speculation use if you'd like (not everything is going to be here but I made sure to pick out a lot):

For the last spot I'm not 100% sure who I'd pick. Waluigi, Bomberman, Ashley, Mimikyu, Shovel Knight... I'd be cool with any of them.

For a serious answer on Assist Trophies, my favorites are:

• nintendog
• Shovel Knight
• Sukapon
• Spring Man
• Riki

Though the best actual editions would likely be:

1. Waluigi (widely popular in general)
2. Zero (incredibly popular, and appeals to a different group of people despite hailing from an existing series)
3. Shadow (insanely popular pick for a Sonic the Hedgehog character, which has moderate to high demand)
4. Alucard (good enough of a pick to be a contender for the only Castlevania slot)
5. Skull Kid (seems to have the most reverence of the one-offs)

Honorable mention goes to Spring Man, who alongside Ribbon Girl and Ninjara are good candidates for clones of Min Min since they can differ from her greatly without that great of a work load. They're just not really a hot commodity.

Considering he's not in, still it'd be Brain. If only one, anyway.

If more, then you can add in Shadow, Dixie Kong, Isaac, Urshifu, Genesect, Deoxys...

I only voted for one last time, not that it'd mean much. Either way I'd have only voted for other characters by that point, heh.

Waluigi, Midna, Spring Man, and — if we include Pokéballs — Zoroark are the only upgrades I'd really want.

There's a few others I wouldn't have an issue with if they became playable, but I'm more content with them staying ATs.

We're doing assist promotions? Here are the ones I like most (though not very realistic):

• Alucard (best shot for an assist promotion in the next game imo, has a fun and varied moveset)
• Tiki (playing as a big dragon would be fun, though not balanced)
• Shadow (wanted him in since Sonic)
• Midna (A small grappler would be fun, plus could ride Wolf Link)
• Rathalos (same reason as Tiki, also a big MonHun fan)

And as a bonus, here's five Pokemon I'd promote:

• Scizor (this guy is built for fighting games)
• Abomasnow (one of my personal favorites)
• Deoxys (form change would be pretty busted as a character, but fun)
• Ditto (could take moves from other fighters)
• Bewear (would be a funny addition but still be a powerhouse)

For some reason, i thought for sure she was a shoo-in back in Smash 4.

So did I... I knew they where gonna split up Zelda and Sheik, but never guessed they thought Sheik warranted her own spot. And thus they'd replace Sheik properly with Impa.

But yeah, I was wrong.

I still hope she will make it... One day.

Reason why specifically the last isn't because of Nintendo finishing the pass with a sizzle, but because it takes a good amount of negotiations to get one in the game.

With Mario and Fire Emblem character already DLC, I find it hard to believe TPC or Nintendo won't want to throw in a Pokemon in the mix.

It would be somewhat anti-climatic to end a Smash game off with a Pokemon most people don't want. But than again, Smash games have never ended with a big bang in terms of the final character in each game.

Oh, wow, I had no idea this was a thing.

Also, am I seeing things or is the lighting distorting the second "S" in a way that almost looks like a 3? As in "S03" or "Splatoon 03"?

Probably just my mind playing tricks on me, but the "Save Our Salmons" thing? Yeah, that's definitely not coincidental. "Salmons" looks particularly legible in the original image.

Metroid should definitely not be overlooked for this year's smash speculation, especially with the Metroid 5 rumors going around.

Makes sense.
SEGA most famous output is their arcade stuff and Opa-Opa is the perfect rep for that outside of Ryo. A character that can rep everything including Space Harrier, Puyo Puyo, HOTD, Virtua Fighter, Altered Beast, Outrun, Shinobi, hell throw in some Master System stuff like Alex Kidd and Phantasy Star and it makes sense.

I bet Yuji Masubuchi (The Pacman Block Party arranger) would be down with doing a remix since he's already done so before.

You know what, I was joking with the original post but **** it you provided a solid case for Opa-Opa, let's make it an actual thing

Splatoon's issue is the cast. The only other character that seemingly lends itself towards playability (and is somewhat plausible) would probably be quite similar to Inkling.

It probably will get additional representation eventually because it's a very successful series - though perhaps only as a clone or when the series fleshes out its cast - but I doubt it's in the cards for DLC this time.

Plus, that upcoming Splatoon title has been rumored to be a spin-off, which generally aren't given as esteemed treatment in Smash.

I saw some people here speculating that Arthur (Ghost 'N Goblins) would be one of the most likely characters to be in FP2. That honestly makes me pretty happy. Not that i thing he'd have a better chance than other Capcom reps (Dante, for exemple), but he would be a cool Capcom rep (if we're going to get another Capcom rep at this point).

I disagree that the cast is unfit for playability (I think Pearl and Marina are distinct enough in body-shape to be a unique take on the Icies/duo character archetype, unlike Squid Sisters) but yeah, the frontrunner being the ideal echo does block discussion on the series quite a bit.

Yes. Every fighter, even those with alts that change their names, only take up 1 WOL slot.

If that's the case, best-case scenario I expect only Post-Pass 2 individual DLC or perhaps a few extra DLC Echos since they're not time-consuming and perhaps Sakurai felt giving us a little extra content is his thanks for us being fans.
