Mario 64 was groundbreaking for Nintendo fans. I remember my sister taking it for a swing on Christmas morning and how ****ing unbelievable it was for us. Going back, it probably loses a whole lot, but at the time you have to understand how amazing it was (not sure if you got it immediately, but jeez, it was amazing back then and if you didn't experience that, I really feel sorry for you).

Have any Zelda games actually been challenging? Have any 1P games from that era and beyond? I know I like to ***** about how there's nothing challenging out there in the 1P market anymore, but I don't think that was ever really the appeal of Zelda games for me.

And do you seriously judge Zelda games that much on Story? To me the story in Zelda is just the way the game tells you what to do next. I've never found myself getting invested in the actual content of the story at all in Zelda.

Sailing in WW was fun for about 5 minutes, bearable for the next 30 minutes, and the subsequent 5702485398457 hours were brutal. I really enjoyed the rest of that game, but I have no idea how playtesting didn't reveal that after you had explored a section of the map it was just a huge pain in the *** to have to keep sailing to get where you needed.
Oh I'll agree with you that the game was groundbreaking and that at the time it was the most amazing thing ever. I've just always preferred Zelda over Mario, that's just a really biased opinion on my part because I'm a huge Zelda fanboy.
I mean I still enjoy watching the game to this day, but I've always preferred the Zelda, Megaman, Star Fox, and Sonic franchises over Mario.

That's true too, Zelda games really aren't all that challenging. I think the Capcom made Zelda games are much more difficult than any of the other ones. Twilight Princess felt like it recycled every puzzle I had ever seen in Zelda... I hated that game, I P'd it on my first play through. But I'll admit you are right about 1P not presenting too much of a challenge these days. Probably a big reason I only play fighting games these days.

Yeah, I do take story into account. I'm one of those Zelda fanboys that goes around analyzing small bits of the game and making timeline theories xD

Lol I know, I can't believe they didn't end up seeing how much of a pain in the *** it was to sail around for 10 minutes straight just doing nothing and you didn't even get the song to help you teleport towards the end of the game. It's my only complaint with the game and I still think it's better than OoT. Lol in fact, I think Ocarina of Time is the 4th best Zelda game in the series, maybe even 5th.
Wow.. I'm a jerk to 64 games.

For whatever reason, I actually enjoyed sailing in WW. The part of that game that I hated was the triforce hunt. How did that get through playtesting?

And Zelda used to be hard. The 2-D ones could be brutal, but they didn't get absurdly easy until WW.

Link's Awakening is one of the best, I never played Link to the Past.

ALSO I loved Wind Waker BUT GUESS WHAT I never beat it BECAUSE of the triforce hunt. Got 5 out of 8 shards and gave up. How unbelievably unneccessary and boring. Also I have a huge fear of underwater missions or anything to do with water in video games which was instilled in me at a young age by the shark in Tomb Raider.

I don't even remember hating the triforce hunt, but i can't say I remember it all that well.

The first Zelda was mildly challenging and Link's Adventure was pretty tough (lol, my dad was **** at that game and probably the only person in the world who enjoyed it), but I can't honestly say I think that LttP or anything later was remotely difficult. Again, loads of fun, but I don't think it came from the difficulty.

Link's Awakening is one of the best, I never played Link to the Past.
Never played any of the portable games until Phantom Hourglass (which was pretty **** alright in my book). You should probably play LttP, it's a classic.

the eel in Mario 64 blew my mind at first and scared the **** out of me about water. I got over it eventually though.

I'll play LttP right after I finish ff6, I need to get back on that >_>

I don't think I'll ever get over my fear of underwater missions ever. In fact I actually had to mute the tv during that mission in the first Devil May Cry where you had to retrieve something in a sunken ship. When I reached the deepart part and found the chest, the raptors with harpoon guns or w/e came out and I screamed and swam past them all to get the hell out of there and back to the surface. Good **** to DMC for making that all in first person view as well WTF were they trying to give me a heart attack

and I won't even get started on the sewers in Resident Evil 4

mario 64 set the bar. I feel like to overrate something or to claim so, is to be comparing it to things that are "like" it. While there are games that are "like" it in nature, none of them have the groundbreaking presence that m64 had and therefore cannot really be set on the same scale. Anything you can compare was not released at the same time nor in their own time set foundation for 3d adventure games like mario 64. its obvious that other 3d adventure games were better technically, graphically, and had more polish overall(OoT), but the mere fact that mario 64 set sooooooo much foundation for the genre itself way back when negates any kind of "fair" comparison between it and its successors.(I am NOT suggesting that mario 64 was the only 3d adventure game in the works or that 3d adventure games wouldnt exist without it, but its obvious that it was leagues above anything else out at the time.)

TL DR; Mario 64 set sooo much foundation for the 3D adventure genre that its above any and all comparison. Mario 64 is too much of a technilogical milestone to be looked at in the same way as OoT is looked at.(or any other games similar in the genre for that matter)

Majoras Mask is my fav of the zeldas..........DEF overlooked in my experiences/conversations with ppl

I think the problem is that people equate a game's impact on design with it's impact on themselves. I readily admit that Mario 64 changed the game industry, even if I personally didn't think too much of it when I played it. So a statement about its importance to gaming is still true, even if it doesn't change my own outlook on the game's enjoyability.

*implied Gamecube FF's were bad*
=[ FF:CC was pretty fun with friends.

Wind Waker is the best game in the series imo.
Even though I agree with almost everyone that the sailing kinda killed the game. Probably the best story/bosses in the series.

I loved the Sailing too. The music while sailing was just relaxing, and all those random little things you could find out on the high seas was just so cool. Its the last Zelda game I beat 100%.

The hardest [good]Zelda game though, was Oracle Of Ages. Like, seriously. So brutal, yet so awesome. It was kinda dark too.

Yea, that's Link's Adventure. As I said, my Dad was **** at that game and was probably the sole member of the Zelda 2 fan club.
you got that right... that game is not very loved at all.

LOL that part with the giant invisible cockroaches that would jump on you and vomit all over your face? Hahahaha I need to play RE4 again.
*thinks back fondly* I love that game

Yeah, Zelda 1 and 2 were pretty difficult. The only other difficult ones in the series are the Capcom made ones, which are the Oracle games and Minish Cap. I loved the sprites in Minish Cap, they were so amazing. It's to be expected from Capcom though.

I loved WW, imo easily one of the best Zelda games.
It actually felt like a zelda game.
Yeah, I was very upset that a lot of people were so put of by the graphics. They were the change that the series needed.
A Link to the Past > ALL OTHER ZELDA GAMES.
Who disagrees? Lets argue.
Right here my good sir. I'm willing to argue why Wind Waker is the best game, Majora's Mask is better than Ocarina of Time, and why Minish Cap is in the top 5 of Zelda games.

Lol I'll watch The Godfather in it's entirety if you beat Wind Waker. Deal?
how could mario64 be overrated
...
I'm a jerk to 64 games... despite the fact that Star Fox 64 is my favorite game of all time.
Yea, that's Link's Adventure. As I said, my Dad was **** at that game and was probably the sole member of the Zelda 2 fan club.
I hate that ****ing game so much. Ughhhhh, I even hate replaying it.

Lol I love this thread.

Whoever told you FF8 was bad is a loser. All FFs on the PS1 are masterpieces, basically.
It was Will.

People should go to the Vernon meetup tonight. Roman and awsmsean are going. Heck, even Cort is going!
I am no longer attending as my ride is currently on Academic Probation and his parents wont let him go anywhere.

It's a possibility that we'll be up at the Mansfield tourney tomorrow but I doubt it.

Also, thanks to Darc I am now seconding Jiggs. :D

it was the weekend after my 8th birthday when i first played resident evil on the ps1 at a friend-of-the-family's house...the game just came out, i had no idea what it was, but it was the game in the system, the title screen and intro were ******, and i was so excited to play a playstation since the most modern console i had was the genesis. i walked around the first floor of the mansion confused as **** like everyone did for like 5 minutes, and finally found my way to the dining room and subsequent hallway. do do do do lala lala dododoooo OMFG A ZOMBIE IS EATING THAT GUY NOMNOMNOM OH **** HE TURNED AROUND AND NOW HE'S LOOKING AT MEEEE. OH ****, HE'S COMING RIGHT FOR ME...WTF AT THESE CONTROLS, RUN, *****, RUN!!! BARRY SHOOT HIM IN THE FACE, SHOOT HIM IN THE FACE! when that scene was over and i was through being mesmorized by the cutscene after that, i looked down to discover i had peed my pants. nothing in the 5th generation of gaming ever put a dent in me as much as that game did.

the first 4 resident evils (meaning 1-3 and code veronica) are all still really important to me, and even though i like the silent hill series a little bit more...i will nevar forget the one game that made me piss myself. super mario 64...cool but forgotten personally.

If you remember how the leveling system in that game worked, my dad would time it so that he got a level 4 sword upon completion of the first temple. It was so disgusting, he'd like 2 or 3 hit the first 3 or 4 bosses

I play all the FF games vicariously through him, but FF8 did seem pretty good from personal research.

I love you for showing me this. <3

This makes me want to drop the whole idea of using Cody and just strictly focus on Ibuki....but I won't because Codys awesome. She looks soooooooo fun!

Does anyone else think that Makoto is going to be horrible?

I think Dudley might be Sagat tier in this....he looks incredible.
Yeah, Makoto looks like she's either going to be terrible or really good as soon as people figure her out. She looks like she's just got pokes. That dashing punch thing is sure to catch people off guard, though.

Hooray for no ride. Unless Dan calls me now about going, I wont be there. Good luck to everyone.
