Maybe its the nostalgia in me talking but that was pretty cool. I admit I was even a fan of both Mortal Kombat movies as a kid. Production value seems be be pretty different this time around. Curious who the protagonist is gonna be, can't tell from the trailer.
but its kinda like what Angry Video Game Nerd said, they really need to stop releasing movies with the same name as the original even if its a remake.
the original mortal kombat produced that techno mortal kombat theme song, and for that alone propels itself into best video game movie of all time (which is not much of an honor to begin with)
Inglourious Basterds has plenty of substance. The three standout characters are very well realized and developed characters: Shosanna, Col Landa and Frederick Zoller. Each are played by an unknown (to US audiences and me personally at least) actor who turns in a marvelous performance. While Christoph Waltz attracted most of the press for his masterful performance, I think every actor in the film performed at an incredibly high level. While you may say "What does this have to do with Quentin Tarantino? These are all actors!", it's a sign of a good director when he can get top level performances out of the entire cast.
The movie builds tension in amazing ways that very few works of fiction I've seen have managed to pull off. [Spoilers tagged ahead, don't read before watching the **** movie!]
The scene with Shosanna at dinner with Goebbels, Zoller and Landa is mindblowingly tense with what we know as the audience. The scene in the bar where they play the game with the Nazi soldiers is one of the best I've seen in a while. The tension builds over a period of 20-30 minutes before erupting in a short gun fight.
Part of the reason I'm so confused about your take on IB being no substance is that there isn't all that much violence in the movie. We get some graphic scenes, but they are fleeting. The bulk of the movie is high tension cat and mouse. Our heroes are all trying to stay hidden in plain sight while being hunted by an undeniably evil regime. The conclusion of the movie does come off as "revenge fantasy" level of stuff, but it's done in a visually stunning way.
The film being projected onto a screen of smoke was a great choice that left a haunting image. The violence against the Third Reich feels justified, because these are the 'monsters' that are so easy to hate. But even in the final moments we don't see anything I would call an excess of violence.
Since you assert you are not a troll, I hope you can help me understand why you think (and I quote) "[Inglourious Basterds] is still no substance. Its flashy bull **** with nothing backing it."
(And, for the record, I don't think QT has ever created something I would call "Shock Cinema". Even though he has used gratuitous violence in some of his movies, it never feels like his movies as a whole are designed to offend/shock/etc you. Maybe they just make you go 'AWESOME, DUDE', but I've never felt like his primary objective (or the primary reaction) to his movies are to be shocking.)
And I have no idea what movie you are talking about that Tarantino supposedly released that was torture porn. Maybe Hostel, which he helped produce but didn't direct or write? It sounds like you are misinformed on top of being hella wrong about Inglourious Basterds.
****it pat beat me to it
i posted the link in the wrong thread earlier lol
it looks awesome imo, better than the first 2 which actually weren't quite bad in comparison to other video game movies like street fighter (both of them) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_MqZn7E-mk
Lol. I enjoyed myself at Karate Kid but it was definitely a terrible movie. Don't even feel like pointing out all the horribleness but it was fun either way
Ha alright I'll watch it. I really think (500) Days of Summer is my favorite movie now, had a short discussion with SuperRad about it and saw it again yesterday and realized that it's just awesome
(500) Days of Summer definitely surprised me. I literally went in hating it, and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I might actually watch it again tonight if I have some free time between packing.
Speaking of Jackie Chan, has anyone seen Shinjuku Incident? It's a chinese language crime film starring Jackie. Apparently there's almost no action, and it's just a good crime movie.

**** 500 days of summer got to me
cuz thats like the chickenheads that i continuously fall for
and i fell for summer/hated her like 3 times throughout the film
have you guys seen "brick"? it stars the guy from 500 days of summer and it's a good film i found the end alil weak but the movie feels solid throughout
i like how 'dark' theyre making it
the slow panning camera during the j cage fight was nice (and a good break from all the shaky camera we've seen lately)
In case you are a doubter: Toy Story 3 is really ****ing good. It's funny, emotional, smart, everything you would expect from a really good pixar movie. I also was really impressed by the opening short. It's not particularly exciting or anything, but it's just a cool idea that was fun to watch.
maybe if you have incredibly low standards for perfect
Toy Story 3 might be the best of all Toy Story movies. I need to see it again before I'm willing to snap to that judgment (or giving it the "Perfect" label).
Have you guys seen these movie reviews by "RedLetterMedia" on youtube? He goes through and destroys (for example) Star Wars Ep. 1. It's pretty funny while managing to explain the criticism succinctly.
The RedLetterMedia reviews are amazing because they are a really good deconstruction of the prequels and not just LOL THEY'RE BAD. He nails the real issues with the movie that go beyond stiff acting and Jar Jar Binks.
