What do you think the two most different games in a given genre are? Like, if there are two limits to a genre, these games are on opposite sides. I thought about this when debating with someone if roguelites were actually a genre or if they were just mechanics. I said that the most different roguelites were way more different than the most different games in other genres as evidence for roguelite not being a genre. My specific examples were Hades and Loop Hero for roguelites vs Super Meat Boy and Megaman for platformers. Though nowadays I'd probably say something like Balatro and Enter the Gungeon vs Super Meat Boy and Prince of Persia Sands of Time or something.
Divorced from the whole roguelite debate, I think it's a pretty interesting subject to look at. What do you think are the most different fighting games, racing games, RPGS? We frequently refer to games as these categories with this vague understanding about what they mean but I think it's really interesting to look at what the limits for these genres are. Personally, I think that my platformer choices are still a little weak. I only picked Sands of Time because I first had the original Prince of Persia and realized that both games were 2D. Do you have any other ideas on what it could be?
