I think it is highly likely the next Smash game will try to focus more on competitive play (it's the only - or at the very least, least specific - audience that Ultimate can really be topped for; competitive players prefer having less matchups so it makes sense from a development/budget perspective; every other platform fighter is trying to appeal to this audience above all; and the content of the last few challenger packs like the hard CPUs and simple stages seems to be hinting at it like how a lot of Ultimate's content was hinted at in the last few DLC packs of 3DS & Wii U), but I don't really have confidence in Sakurai and his team pulling it off well.
