Part of the reason I favour the Windows characters like McZee and Clippy over Rare characters in the context of Smash, a CTR guest grand prix, or other Scrimblo-adjacent Microsoft crossovers is because the Rare characters still have worlds and followings to build games with - the Windows characters only exist because of misinterpreted research and have no place in modern Microsoft products now that they're proven ineffective, and there isn't really a "Windows universe" to make a wacky spin-off out of, so crossovers in games are the only place these really cool and iconic characters could ever thrive now.

I'm personally of the belief that the Mario "main series" consists of the platformers*, Kart, and Party.

*sans the Land duology, Run, and the spotlight games marketed as sequels. I'd probably also be reluctant to count Mario 2 if it weren't for how heavily it impacted later Mario titles even if it never got a true sequel or successor.

I feel the only remaining synonym for "fight" that could work for a Smash game is "Duel" - though I also only it'd work if the next game doubled down on 1v1 competitive play like almost all other platform fighters are.

I like to think of the "retro cutoff" this way:

U/One/4 and Wii/3/360 Era: Old ("The Recent Memory Zone")
SNES/Mega Drive through GameCube/Xbox/2/Dreamcast Era: Retro ("The Nostalgia Zone")
NES/Master System and earlier: Vintage ("The Fading Zone")

I feel the Wii/3/360 era is one of the edge of entering retro and the SNES/SMD era is on the edge of entering fading.

When I say "fading" I don't mean that younger gamers can't, don't, or shouldn't take interest in or seek out vintages titles, moreso that the people who grew up on them initially are losing interest in gaming and there's no more need to cater to their nostalgia unfortunately, which will only make these games harder to access (or at least discover) both legally and illegally unless it's a "your kids are gonna love it" situatuon like EarthBound.

Slightly different take here: I'm not sure too about the Boxing Ring Stage, as that feels like it's leaking a little too much into Punch Out. That's probably the absolute most crossover I'd personally want. I'd extend the absolute extreme to Nintendoland at most. I'm probably in the minority...

It's kinda weird how PSASBR was criticised for being "too similar" to Smash back in 2011 despite being easily the least Smash-like platform fighter in recent history, but nowadays games like Rivals and Nick which are the exact same concept as Smash, just with different audiences and priorities, are criticised as "too different"
