okay so my thoughts on the live action ace attorney movie:
It was okay, you should only really watch it if you’re a big aa fan but even then it’s not that worth it unless you’re curious. I actually kind of liked how they got the costumes to match the games pretty and pretty much just look like cosplays even if it looked funny, but that effect didn’t really work because the whole movie was shot with this boring, serious grey camera filter that was really bad. It feels like if the 60s batman show were filmed with whatever camera they used for batman vs superman. It’s really distracting and even if it was a serious film the camera work would be bad.
Anyways about the actual content, it was super rushed at the beginning and there was pretty much no time to actually know the personality of the characters. One good example of this is maya who literally doesn’t even get any scenes showing her personality she has in the games except for jokingly calling phoenix stupid once, it’s awful. A lot of characters were done dirty but she was probably the worst because we get nothing from her. Everyone else was only slightly better than her and we’re really flat and one-dimensional. If I showed this movie to someone who hasn’t played the ace attorney games and then they played the first one, each of the main characters besides maybe larry‘s and manfred (I’ll get to him later)’s personalities would be a complete surprise.
Ace attorney’s suspense and mysteries are more character driven and emotional because of them so the characters being bad just makes it uninteresting. It’s not really a good adaptation and doesn’t really do anything if it’s own so it just ends up not being that good, but some of the suspenseful moments and drama can still be really fun and interesting at times.
ironically I feel like manfred was actually the only character who was just as good in this movie as he was in the games but that’s because manfred barely had any personality in the ace attorney games IMO, and he was a pretty boring character in the games. Especially because pretty much every ace attorney character has a fun character quirk and he doesn’t have one besides maybe talking deeply. I know he’s supposed to be a serious character but I feel like if everyone has a character quirk in a series but one character and they’re not supposed to be the “straight man” they end up being boring. But in this movie when everyone else has less personality and doesn’t have those character quirks he actually kind of shines
