We all know that girls are a rarity in any gaming community.

In the Smash community some girls like to come because they love the game. Some girls come because they know that they will get attention just from being there.

But what I cant wrap my head around is why a guy would bring his girlfriend with him to a tournament. If I was a girl I would imagine that the last thing I would want to do is come watch a bunch of sweaty, smelly random guys play an old video game in a cramped and crowded room with a lack of chairs for hours at a time.

I get that our girls want to bond with us, and might want to do what we want to do from time to time. They might even tag along just because they want to spend time with us, even if they may not have our full attention. But overall, a tournament is one of the last places I would wanna take my girl if I had a choice. Its just not a good place for a date.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

Eh, I disagree

Maybe their girlfriend want to show moral support for their guy? Or maybe their girlfriend is interested in the smash community and may want to hang out with us more. I mean, the smash community tournaments and smashfest isn't just for people who is interested in the game. I mean, we should welcome all people who are respectful to the community to these places.

I mean, my girlfriend don't HAVE to come. She can come if she wants to. I believe the same is for any girlfriend/boyfriend.

All and all, the question is basically asking if it's worth the time, which it all depends upon the said girlfriend/boyfriend. Also, not all guys are smelly and whatnot. A good number to a lot are pretty fresh and clean (I'm pretty sure all the good/best players shower...eh on M2K LOL. I don't think Robots can shower LOL jk).

As long as the person isn't forced to come, I don't see any harm in bringing anyone, boyfriend or girlfriend, to a smash tournament/smashfest.

I agree with this. Being apart of the Smash community is not just about playing Smash. I didn't play for quite a while when I first came on the scene but I was there for every smashfest to hang out with the people because they were cool (My boyfriend didn't go/wasn't there). Being a girl I have no problem going to places with my boyfriend to experience new things. Plus if its something he's passionate about then I go for moral support, to cheer him on, or to make him feel better if he loses.

Granted, in my ex-situation, I was the one that played, he was the one that didn't... But he didn't like any of the people that are a part of Dallas Smash because of the "they just want to have sex with you" bit. But if the shoes were on the other feet, I would have gone just to support him and to hang out with him and to have fun.

♥ My post count is my age. Deal with it.
I'll list some possible reasons:

  • Show Off
  • Expose them to Brawl/Melee Competition
  • Girlfriend is in tournament
  • Moral Support
  • Wants them to meet someone else
  • Helping out in tournament

I have listed whatever came to my mind.

Clearly it's an attempt at impressing her. And intimidating all the other nerds. >_>
. . . nah. Every time I've seen one of these girls, I've only been faintly distracted, by the thought "... someone should get her a chair. :("

And, yes, the ellipsis and rendered emoticon are both actual components of that thought.

basically o.p. is opinion and not necessarily true.
i don't quite get bringing non-gaming gf's to tourneys though... if you want them to play then get them good at it at home first lol. it's legit if you'd like to spend time w/ her or vice versa while still wanting to play some smash with your friends though.

irish mafia: jesi is 99% of why darkrain is the best falcon.

If I had a girlfriend I wouldn't think about asking her to come to a tournament unless she wanted to come. I just don't think she'd be interested unless she was actually involved playing in some matches. Unless I was watching the top people smash off I wouldn't go to a tournament either so I wouldn't expect her to. I'd make time for her later anyways by doing something we both like to do such as seeing a movie or biking.

This would be true with anything such as a track meet or basketball game. These are things I like to do but not necessarily her. She shouldn't expect me to attend her activities either if she knows I'd not be interested.

If she enjoys watching me Smash and wants to come than that's alright. I would just think she'd be very bored.

I'd never recommend my gf come to a smash tournament, I know they're boring to the casual observer

I'd assume, though, that its the GF who proposes coming to the tournament.

Although note to any smashers GF's that may read this, you don't know what you're getting into.

Hailey has fun attending tournaments because she knows that it means a lot to me.

And recently we've started doing better because she has a drive to get good at it ^_^.

All of the girls I've been around in a tournament scene are either a) playing friendlies, b) teaming with their boyfriends, c) running tio/helping keep track of brackets, or d) chewing their nails off out of boredom.

I AM a girl, and I'm the one that drags my crew to tournaments. If I weren't even remotely into this game, I can't really imagine that I'd have much fun. Hell, I play BOTH Melee and Brawl, and somehow, there's still always like, ten minutes where I'm bored out of my mind.

Any guy that brings their girl-thing to a tournament should also keep in mind that most of us that attend tournaments are in the teens or early twenties, and that hormones are rampant, and there may be an off-handed comment or two about said girl. The community is all full of great people though, which I find to be particularly special in a gaming community, so all comments are probably meant in completely harmless fun.

I think some guys might bring them because they don't really think they're going to be bored- they really want to find another level to connect on. They feel that "Smash is an important part of my life, and I want to share that with her." Whether or not she respects that or not is up to her.

Sometimes, the girl might get into it- she might even become a competitive Smasher.

The Smash scene is really interesting. I think some girls would get bored, and some will enjoy it. Sometimes Smashers are too scared/intimidated to talk to a girl, and if you leave her out, she WILL feel ignored and possibly become adamantly against the game because all she can remember is "These guys are boring, and my boyfriend ignored me to play this game", so bringing her can be a really dangerous thing.

I think I circumvented the actual question, here, though. So I'll leave now. :D

Oh... well...

No, I'm an only child. I was the only girl in my elementary school that was obsessed with Mario instead of Barbie. It probably cost me a lot of potential friendships back then, but it's afforded me many opportunities to become tight with other gamers at this point in my life.

I've played games all my life, am close to breaking a couple of speedruns. I've only myself to thank C:

I guess the problem is that when you are at a tournament you have to balance playing and chilling with the guys and paying attention to your gf. Its never a good thing to give your gf/bf only 50% of your attention when you could be giving 100%. The nature of a tournament makes that difficult I imagine. Unless you can multitask extremely well and talk to them while ******. (i.e. the top pros should be really good at this)

I always figured that guys who bring their girlfriends to tournaments were trying to avoid being one of those guys who keeps his love life and his social life separate. Something about compartmentalization has always irritated me, but I can't place a finger on a reason behind my ire.

I feel that if I've played for two years and have accomplished a lot and made a ton of friends it's something I should share with my girlfriend. She now likes a majority of the smash players OUTSIDE of the smash scene and has let it integrate within out lives. I don't know if that has to do with the amount of time we'd been dating but who knows.

Well my last ex went with me from time to time (when it was more local and not an hour + away) mainly just to show support. I mean, its a hobby of yours, and they just want to get to know what youre doing when you disappear for the day.

Of course, I wouldn't force a gf into going. Some girls (and guys for that matter) think that being that good at a videogame is just a nerdy thing, and then there are some who think its awesome.

Although usually its the japanese class girls who think its awesome when its smashbros.

It would be pretty funny if some guy got the girl because she thought he was good at Smash and then breaks up with him if he's eliminated in the first round. :p

That's my GF. I don't team with her ever but every once in awhile she finds someone to team with randomly. She's been to a lot of tournaments (FCD, two tourney's in MD, a tourney in MI, about 10 in OH, and I think 1 in IN). She usually doesn't play in the tournament but does bring her controller and do a lot of friendlies. She has fun.

They bring thier girlfriends just because they can. Is there really a probelm with that? I mean I definintely would want someone there that (Hopefully) loves me and would like to support me in what my interests are. It's like inviting your family/friends/girlfriend to a basketball game you're going to be in. You want them there for moral support.

People really have to start looking at the professional gamming commnity as they would a sport.
