Gonna be real here there should NOT be a move which make the opposite player afraid to attack because it offers invulnerability especially when the MOVE CAN INSTANTLY INVALIDATE MANY OTHER CHARACTERS RECOVERY . More importantly competitive is NOT the smash fanbase , casual still is
Just to be clear on one thing, Counter moves are not as easy to utilize effectively as one might think. They're all about trying to outsmart your opponent, and if you time the counter window wrong, you can get punished for it.

Also, grabs and unblockable attacks (such as Final Smashes) can pierce right through Counter. Of course, in the case of Incineroar, Revenge does reduce how much damage (and knockback) it takes from an unblockable attack.

So you are basically agreeing with me. Why should they be game if they are not consistently useful ?
Quite the opposite.

You're agreeing with me.

You admitted that they' aren't the oppressive poorly designed moves you said they were, because abusing them teaches bad habits. You also admitted that these bad habits can be exploited.

Counters aren't a problem, when grabbing and mind games exist.

What if counter simply becomes a game mechanic, and everyone gets one? Just parry and press B immediately. Counter. Give everyone a unique one, or some characters.

1 mind games don't work on CPUs

2 No what i posted was it teaches is poor game-play. Poor Game-play , meaning it can be easily relied upon with a good read. Also No one should be relying on counters for taking stocks on an opponent's recovery.

3 counters also are not useful offensively either which makes them way less valuable as 25% of a characters special moves.

4 Grabs being a work around to counters really does Not work on slower characters.

5 I assume you use characters for whom they have more speed & thus more options

I'm glad Rivals exists. I can finally walk away from this awful franchise because I have actual options now for platform fighters.
You really need not bother insulting this franchise. You can be happy with Rivals without insulting anything else. Honestly the biggest challenge Smash has is most of the special are extremely boring , & not as consistently useful as they should be.

People that hate Smash should just....not be here.

It makes absolutely no sense to be on a forum dedicated to something you hate, so go find somewhere else to dwell and focus on things you actually like.
This feels gatekeepy to me. It’s fine to dislike a series overall and still enjoy certain elements within it enough to participate in fandom discussion. For example, I think assassins creed is a bad series with very few good games but I still like concepts within it enough to participate in discussions on it. Why can’t others do the same for Smash?

Especially when this site is somewhat pivoting to discuss Rivals of Aether and other platform fighters alongside Smash.

Answer me this.
Would you or would you not go out of your way to join a forum that is centered around Assassin's Creed just to post about how much you hate it?

On one hand, I do believe dedicating a lot of your time and energy to something you don't like isn't very productive or constructive. On the other, SmashBoards, despite the name, is becoming more of a hub for platfighter discussion in general, if it's not that already based on how well NASB and MVS threads have performed in the past. I also don't think liking the most recent Smash game should be a preresiquite for being here - Even people I've seen be very critical of Ultimate have games in the franchise they like.

It's important to be critical of the things you like.

I'm certain that Eremurus likes Smash to some extent, even a little, otherwise he wouldn't be posting here. I can somewhat relate in that I like Smash but I have a lot of fundamental issues with it that prevent it from being the perfect platform fighter.

This person is clearly into platform fighters which Smash is the pioneer of, so if he ended up finding something better and wants to express that in post form, there's nothing wrong with that post at all.

Barely, only one thread about a non-Smash platform fighter is decently active, the rest is Smash, Smash, and the social thread.

I'm certain that Eremurus likes Smash to some extent
He's already posted the exact same post ITT a few times minus the RoA mentioning, and his posts in general have been fairly negative, I doubt it.

They actively try to dissuade new users from being on the boards and speak of how Smash should just die because anything past Melee is bad.

You bleeding hearts need to stop enabling people that serve only to troll and hate just because you want "fairness".

This is a fair assessment, but there's also a fine line between trolling and civil discussion. Existing on the boards just to talk about how much Smash sucks is one thing (falls under that "not productive/constructive" banner i was talking about), but I feel people who do that are in the overwhelming minority of the site's population.

And it's painfully obvious that I'm saying those people specifically need to just leave.

If you hate Smash, then don't participate in a forum dedicated to Smash. Go somewhere else for something you want to talk about because you serve no purpose here.

You wouldn't join a forum centered around Pokémon if you hate Pokémon just because there's a side section about One Piece. You would....go somewhere that's more focused on One Piece.

And so are the people who are trying to use this forum to discuss other platform fighters, so I don't see why you'd argue that this site is becoming more than just a Smash board.

I can sympathize with that. I was trying to cover broad strokes with my assessment of the debate since your intial post was pretty generally worded, so I might have taken more of a liberal definition of "hating Smash" than what was appropiate or intended. My apologies for that (and to Nelson as well but I don't feel like double quoting is necessary seeing as he just posted a reply).

I agree that flatout not liking Smash at all isn't a good fit for this community.

It really isn't, it's just common sense.
No one's saying you must think Smash is without flaws or serious issues that should be addressed. But when you're actively ****ting up threads by going "Game bad, play other game" why exactly would you still be here? There's nothing constructive there. If you actually have something to say then by all means it's fine. But when you're outright going "I can finally walk away from this awful franchise" then just delete your account (or try to because lol SB staff so change the password to some key smash nonsense, log out and delete all history with the site I guess) instead of being weird. Because you ain't "walking away" if you're still hanging around on a forum dedicated to said "awful franchise"

It's important to be critical of the things you like.
And that's not what's happening here as anyone with a basic reading ability can tell you. Being critical is pointing out the issues Smash has and elaborating on how/why they're an issue and in this instance, what other games are providing that Smash isn't. This is just reddit tier "Smash bad, Rivals good, give upvotes" trash instead of talking about what Rivals does that Smash doesn't, there's no attempt at an honest conversation.

Also note that you're changing the word "hate" into "be critical" and "dislike" which are both very different beasts to "hate"

To clarify, I don’t know anything about Eremurus and my point wasn’t meant to be about them. I just think generally it’s perfectly fine for someone to dislike a franchise and still discuss it if there’s some aspects to it they enjoy and it’s productive. There’s a lot of spaces where people will say “if you don’t like a series anymore why don’t you leave the fandom?” and I dislike that mindset, but if someone literally hates everything about a franchise then yeah they shouldn’t be on forums dedicated to it.

And yes, I would join an Assassins Creed forum if I was still into joining new forums, even though I think the series is bad. A game series contains multitudes and even though I think it’s corporate slop I can recognize there’s some good artists who made some cool concepts to discuss.

Rivals is awesome but let's be honest.

That statement wasn't meant to raise Rivals up. It was meant to tear Smash down. It wasn't constructive at all. People are giving that statement more value than it's worth because it goes against the grain. If there were reasons stated, I'd be okay with it. If there were comparisons stated, I'd be okay with it.

It wasn't a statement made with thought or criticism. It was made with gamer rage.

because anything past Melee is bad
I mean, if someone thinks anything post-Melee - non-inclusive towards 64 and Melee - is bad... they're still a Smash fan, right? The same would be true of fanworks. It's less liking "using a Pokemon fan forum as a Pokemon hater because there's One Piece discussion on the side" and more "Using a Pokemon fan forum as a 'genwunner'" or "using a Pokemon fan forum as a fan of Pokemon Uranium".

64 is sick. Crusade is sick. 64 Remix is sick. I can go on. ¯\(ツ)

I don't like it when people suggest Sonic's forward air get replaced with the Sonic Eagle from Sonic Battle, not just aesthetically as I find Sonic doing midair twirls like that to be fitting of his personality but also practically as I don't think the fastest character in the game should have a meteor smash which Sonic Eagle would absolutely be

I'd personally make it so Neutral Air is the Humming Top from Advance as the spinny move, with Forward Air being more like Kirby's.

We really need a dedicated "Platboards" that discusses every other knockback platform fighter that isn't Smash, lbr.

Then again, forums are only really used nowadays by Millennials that have grown from entitled keyboard warriors to grumpy old men (including me). So that's unlikely.

I’ve seen people who don’t like the modern state of a franchise discuss it in a productive way plenty of times
Tbf that wasn't the case with what was being said, "Smash is awful, thank god I can play Rivals 2 instead' says absolutely nothing constructive, people who have issues with games like idk, FFXVI or DmC are able to communicate their issues with how the direction was handled from combat, story, tone, etc beyond "It sucks"

I don't think characters like Eggman or Shantae are viable for the series. Not because I dislike them or anything, but when taking stuff like all the contraptions the former has or the transformations the latter has, it makes more development costs to make all the extra models. Would have no problem being proven wrong though

Eh tbf, being constructive all the time is boring. Sometimes, people just want to make other people mad.

I wasn’t talking about Eremurus’s post (and FWIW they do seem like a troll just by looking at their account). Sorry if there’s a misunderstanding. The original post I replied to didn’t quote Eremurus directly so I assumed it’s about the trend generally and not that one specific user.

I guess there’s some truth to this, not every discussion here technically has to be “constructive”. God knows a lot of ****posting happens. But at the same time, citing some men just want to see the world burn as a valid reason for why is just a weird leap in logic.

The original post where this discussion came from is about people who hate Smash, not people who likes what they played but have issues with the franchise's direction or anything, just that if there's nothing positive for you to say, you shouldn't really be around sites dedicated to it not just cause it'll annoy others with your negativity that offers nothing but being mad, but because you'd be much happier if you log off and do something that makes you happy

Yeah, it definitely isn't. I just think acknowledging and admitting things (even things about myself) will stop stuff from growing out of hand as opposed to suppressing them.

Not to turn this into a debate about semantics, but I just think calling an entire franchise awful, on a forum dedicated to it especially, comes off as being in bad faith.

Not only is it rather condescending, it's also arguably outright hyperbole. Outside of coding working properly, there's no hard science to what makes a good video game, and a statement like that implies that Smash has absolutely no positive qualities as a video game whatsoever and that no one will or should enjoy any game in the series, when it's blatantly obvious that neither is the case. That's far closer to gatekeeping than simply pointing out that being on a forum primarily dedicated to something you dislike isn't the best idea.

There are far healthier and more constructive ways to express or discuss your opinions. That shouldn't even need to be said. You don't even necessarily have to explain why you don't like the franchise. Just...say that you personally dislike it, for example. That's entirely reasonable, and certainly far more constructive than just insisting that an entire series with millions of fans worldwide is somehow fully and objectively bad.
