Turn Pause Off in Teams

In teams, time is everything. You want to minimize 2v1 situations against your partner as much as possible. If you lose your last stock and need to take your partners, there should be no reason you can't spam the start button to get it as fast as possible, so you can help your partner as fast as possible.

I've only been to one tournament series where this rule was in play (UCLA Monthlies,) but this should be posted in the rule listings for every tournament.

TO's, please keep this rule posted in all tourament rulesets, it's ****

When one person is out in doubles, complications arise when pressing start because it could pause the match if the start button is pressed too early, distrupting the flow of play and possible leading to an accidental death in extreme circumstances.

Taking pause off negates this problem and allows the person who is out to spam the start button to come back at the earliest possible moment.

I have no idea why this isn't in the ruleset already...
Rage quitting is useless in doubles, and Tamoo beat me to what I was gonna say.

I've already witnessed more than one tourney match where the outcome was likely decided by an early pause during an attempt to steal a partner's stock. Unfortunate scene, to say the least. Pause Off is definitely a good idea.

why has it taken 8 years for us to realize this?

I guess its cuz the timing for when you can do it isnt really that hard to learn but still, yea i definitely support this.

I agree with this rule. I'm surprised the idea never came to me before XD

You notice accidental pauses all the time in double matches, and like a lot of people said above me, it disrupts the flow of the game. Really, it'd be no different than to pause the game for a second in a1v1.

I'm all for this. No one intentionally pauses in a doubles match so imo, I think that the rule should be applied into the standard rule set rather than having as an optional rule.

if smash community wasn't so nice, pause would be have always been off, for all events. my knowledge of 2d fighters is limited, but i'm pretty sure one accidental pause at any time during the match = gg, you lose the game

no. having the option to pause in case of outside interference is always a valuable one. just like everything else in smash, learn the timing and time it better. if you can time it better than your opponents, it's an advantage anyway.

edit: we're not other 2D fighter communities.

The issue isn't with good timing and stealing stocks ASAP; it's with bad timing and stealing stocks too early, which pauses the game and affects people's (the players still alive) timing

I agree that having pause is nice though and I would not be opposed to TOs actually enforcing pause rules and punishing the offenders

I think its a trade off between the rare times that pause may be useful and the occasional times that people pause too early and potentially **** up the flow of the match, whatever the TO feels is more important is what will happen

you pause too early, you get dq'd

it'll seem harsh for one or two tournaments but then people learn to wait that extra half second and listen for the announcer and it won't even be a factor

and it wouldn't even be a new rule, as pausing has been against the rules for a long time anyway

so if you have good timing it benefits you better? sure, just like everything in this game. except if you have bad timing it doesn't just hurt you, it interrupts the entire game. the other team might be in the middle of a 90% waveshine usmash and you pause by accident to interrupt to the combo. your partner lives, you make a comeback and win the game. It does not really matter in brawl, due to taking the teammates stock is done by pressing a+b instead of start =)

This isn't something that's just coming to light now btw, the problem, and the solution have both been around since way before brawl was released,

as lovage says, there are TOs that do it, but they are few and far between. What we need is greater awareness of the problem/solution and possibly for the rule to be worked into the sbr official rulelist.

what if you have to answer an important phone call?????????????????????????????????????????????
"Your girlfriend, or the win? Which do you choose?"

Lol. To be honest, this is a good idea. I don't entirely support it, however, for this highly situational reason.

Here's an example

Mario nairs a Fox (@ mid damage) and knocks him back, the stage resets, and the Mario has a couple (or less) seconds of legroom to think of his/her next move. Possibly, so does Fox.

To pause the game even for a bit, would create the same effect as the above.

Wouldn't it then be advantageous to both players?

And for recovering, For the skilled player, The edgeguarder and the one off the stage would both be able to rethink what they're doing even in that "split-second" timeframe?

I'm not quite sure what to think about this.

wait i dont get the situation your trying to explain, are you saying they should pause and think for a second?

I personally pause whenever i am getting edgeguarded to mess up the other player, i act like it was an accident of course =D

O yea, pausing is good for when you are getting wobbled too, dont take pause out!!! would you take time outs out of football???

everyone knows you press start the second the announcer starts talking about how you just died when you want to steal a life. it's pretty simple. people should stop freaking out about it and just take a second to breath, like you would if you lost any other stocks.

You're right.

More specifically, some games call for automatic round/match loss, some games say "other players discretion".

I've seen majors decided off of pause losses. *pours out a lil' soda for Flash Metroid's Jam*

__

But you're right in this community is too nice.

It's the only game with a frickin pause-off option and it still goes on. It's not like people have to do crazy stuff like remove their start buttons to avoid pauses, or mod their controller and put the pause button on the back.

-laughs sarcastically- But those 5 seconds to get back to the character select screen. Especially after you sat through a 3 minute match? That's too much.

everyone knows? if only they did then this wouldn't be a problem. unfortunately i still see people accidentally pause in doubles all the time, just because there hasn't been any huge set decided by it yet, doesn't mean it won't happen. can you imagine if grand finals at pound 4 was ruined because lucky accidentally paused right when m2k was going to uthrow uair mango in the 5th game?

it doesn't take a huge imagination to see how a simple mistiming in doubles can ruin the set

You're missing the point completely. A mis-timed pause effects everyone in the match EXCEPT the person trying to steal that stock that paused it.

you pull a cactuar vs m2k in GF, answer the call while playing.

no johns.
Lol that was awesome.

I don't know it's a tough call, I guess ideally people would learn the timing and wait. But I'd support the rule because not everyone's going to.

wait aren't you automatically disqualified if you pause a match mid-game?
also if your phone does ring you have to keep playing through the match right...? (you can't pause)

if the last question is a yes then i don't see why pause OFF for doubles isn't a good idea. Is there ever a situation where someone walks right in front of the TV in a tournament? i highly doubt that.
