The thread was originally created because the community believed that the tournament listings needed to be separated. What mods came up with was even better than what we had in mind.

Most people believe the new prefix ability only helps your eye to spot which tournament is devoted to which game. But check this out:

The tags allow you to sort the thread listings.

The pulldown menu will allow you to display only threads which match the prefix you're looking for.

It's not a perfect system, but it's there.
It allows you to filter the tournament listings by game without actually creating a separate sub-forum. This is amazing...

I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped bring this topic to the attention of the mods. I want to thank the mod responsible for helping make this happen. And last I want to say thank you to smashboards for being the coolest forum that actually cares to make their members happy.

Thanks

It would be pointless simply because the volume of Melee tournaments is now at a point where it would be better to just have the misc. Melee threads in Tournament Listings. In other words, there are not enough Melee tournaments to designate a forum specifically to them. This is especially true when you consider that most non-regional/national tournaments these days are posted almost exclusively in the regional forums.

it'd help tournament showings, though, as it wouldn't take a million years to sift through a forum filled mostly of topics about tourneys for a game not really fit for tournament play (imo, not flaming people, just the game) just to find a tournament for melee.

I don't get why this is a problem; does adding an extra forum create a bandwidth issue or something?

The forums should be sorted by subject matter, not by activity; if not, why don't we get rid of, say, the pichu character specific boards? I'm sure there are more melee tournaments in a year than threads that have ever been created in there

There's a reason the old char-specific format (where clones shared forums; even ganon/falcon, marth/roy and the like) was scrapped in favor of the new one, even if the pichu boards now see much less activity than the former pikachu/pichu boards

There's nothing wrong with there only being one new thread a week if it's a very relevant one when opposed to having 20 unrelated threads a week to accompany the one relevant one

the reason ALL melee tournaments are posted in the regional forums is because melee only players hardly bother checking the tournament listings since theres way too many brawl threads to sift through.

youre saying "no one posts melee tourneys in the tournament listings, so thats why we dont separate them". I'm sayin "Melee used to post in the tournament listings, but now its so full of non-relevant threads that melee just gets lost in there, so we have had to make due with using regional zones ever since brawl has taken over"

And SWF has a section devoted to JUST 1 player mode. I fail to see how that is more important than having a place to advertise melee tournaments.

I think what Alpha is stating that although it might not take much space or be much of an upkeep issue, there just isn't enough to really warrent it.

It just kind of makes sense to me that Smash Tournaments go in the Tournament listing section. It is not like it is the Brawl tournament listing or it is in the brawl section. It is in the tournament section.

Maybe I should post Melee tournaments in the regional section. That could explain the lack of entrants.

the proposition is that there SHOULD be a barlw tournament listing and a melee tournament listing

i mean, for example, there's already a separate forum just for online tournaments where there wasn't one before, simply because of confusion concerning the nature of tournaments; I don't see why this is different unless smashboards is maxed out at the # of forums they can have

I'd like them to be separated. Everything else is. The vids, general discussion, and character specific boards. Why not tournament listings also? I could see results being a bit overboard (even tho I'm in favor of that being being separated too) for being separated but why not? Man... if I go to tournaments that are both games I'd love it if I could only read melee players responses in the melee tournament listings and not have to sift throught he brawl posts to find the ones I want to read about the melee players. If the brawl players post about a dual game tournament in the brawl tournament listings section I won't have to read their posts lol.

People might want to use those 5 characters for something else since there's a limit on how big your title can be.

Plus if it were divided I wouldn't have to read brawl related posts in dual game tournaments, because that would primarily stay in the brawl tournament listings section of that particular tournament. Much more convenient.

Not to mention that its even easier to clearly distinguish with the separate sections then having to find that melee or brawl in the title. Unless its going to make the site slower I see no reason NOT to do this.

People also tend to forget or don't care enough to include that in their thread title and would probably be mad if you forced them to with infractions and such.

It's really like, not a big deal at all.

brawl people just dont get it...

Find me one melee tournament in the tournament listings that ISNT stickied. Melee players have literally given up trying to compete with brawl tourneys for a spot at the top. No one sifts through pages of tournaments to find a title that says MELEE ONLY or BRAWL AND MELEE.

So what happens is melee is forced to post large scale tournaments (like SPOC VIII which just passed) in the regional zones. And that would be fine if regional zones were separated by game, but it isnt. So melee is forced to compete in a less visited area of the site, and they still have to compete for a spot at the top with all the brawl threads.

It just sucks. I play melee, i dont play brawl. Why should it be hard for me to see just a straight up list of tournaments that only involve my game? Why the **** should i read every title of a thread for the words MELEE.

They've separated every other god**** thing, but the only one that makes sense to separate, the thing that is most important about SWF (free advertising for tournaments, a place to discuss tournaments, etc.) is the only thing not being separated. And as soon as a guy points it out, every god**** brawl head comes in and quiets me. Meanwhile, every melee player supports it because they understand where im coming from, while u have no idea.

It's ridiculous and lazy of this site NOT to separate the two. Cut the "community togetherness" sh*t out, help out a dying game to advertise its d*mn tournaments!

I dont understand why Melee and Brawl dont have separate tourney listing sections on this website. Dont you think it would be much easier to find tourneys? It just doesnt make much sense.
No. It's already very easy and it's fine the way it is.

What would happen with tournaments that feature brawl and melee, would an identical thread need to be placed in both forums?

I don't see why this hasn't already happened ("it isn't broken enough to fix" notwithstanding).

It's not like it's some kind of big project, you just click admin CP and click add subforum.

eh, its been like this ever since ive been here. its not that hard to take 1 min. to read the first post of the tourney thread and see if its only melee or only brawl. most tourneys have both going on anyways.

I again offer my alternative

Can we color code the thread titles then? That would make it easily identifiable without tearing apart a constructed notion of family.

Melee = Red
Brawl = Blue
Both = Purple
B+ = Green

it's even less hard to just click on the forum that you know will have exactly what you're looking for

we could easily scrap regional zones and preface each post with what region(s) the thread pertains to

I'm a brawl-only player and I agree.

Making a new forum takes 3 ****ing seconds, why isn't it like this already?

I'm confused as to why this wouldn't happen. It makes perfect sense. Melee's numbers might be small, but they aren't smash64 small.

Normally, I enjoy your posts, Inui, but I don't like this one. You didn't even attempt to address any of the several valid and strong points that JFox and others have made throughout this thread. All you said is "everything's fine," despite the concerns several people have expressed in this thread.

it would take far more time and energy to program in something that allows threads to be colored. in fact, this server is like many many other message boards, and ive never seen any of them with colored thread titles, so who knows if that is even a possible route.

My suggestion on the other hand is simply leave the link "tournament listings" but when you click it have it go to sub forums, and you can click either melee or brawl (similar to when you click regional zones, and then click atlantic north or pacific west). You would just click the word melee and there would be a list of melee tournaments, and you could just read down the list of melee tournaments going on. No searching, just a straight up conveniently organized list of melee tournaments.

Is that really so much to ask?

Yeah it really is because its already easy enough.

I agree with what's being proposed. I actually made a thread about this a while back. It'd be much more convenient to not have to sift through a mixture of tournaments and having to open up each one to see which game it's for if it's not stated in the title.

so does anyone know which mod i can talk to about getting this done?
I would suggest PMing a mod that you already know (probably one that is a Melee player) and ask them to bring it up in the Staffer Shack (if they aren't already discussing it). While you can't bully them into creating one, the mod can make his case. It may be going against the grain of what the mods want, and in that case you can't do much.
