First time on SWF since last Friday, I think?

Cam asked me earlier what happened at Gold Mine and I realized Chris (Plur) was the only person not present who I'd talked to about it.

I was playing really well all day Saturday and am actually not terribly upset about the losses.

I had a bye my first round of the tournament and then immediately had to play Esam. I had no frame of reference for how good he actually was and was definitely not in singles tourney mode yet. For reference, he is very good. haha He killed me twice very quickly first match (Samus vs Falco) and then I ran him back to last stock but he won. Second game I tried to play tighter and I 2 stocked him. 3rd match I banned DL and he unexpectedly switched to Fox and took me to Fountain. I had some opportunities to win and made small errors (OOS or waveland stuff) that kept me from capitalizing. He caught me with an unexpected Dash attack to Upsmash through a half height platform and won.

I played Tac and won both matches decently.

I played Peter and 4 stocked his Falcon first game. He switched to Marth and played a bit better and I got a mid range 2 stock on him.

Chris and I then stepped out to see Alex Delarge and then came back in and soon had to play each other. I was admittedly a bit nervous about playing Chris because I had dropped a few friendlies to him earlier (aka ~3 or so, I lost more to him than I did Twitch >_>, mainly due to barely shooting lasers and not having fought a good Ganon in a while). When we sat down to play tournament, he got a clutch one stock win first game. I ran it back and JV 2 stocked him. 3rd match I was leading by about 100% or so (I was at 20%) then illusioned off the stage. I was a little shaken but came back and killed him, so we were both even last stock. I shot A LOT more lasers and got him to around 140%, only taking about 40-50%. I made the mistake of thinking I definitely had it and then got hit with an unexpected 2 hit combo that ended with a Bair that lead to me getting edgeguarded.

I was pretty surprised and pretty upset with myself for congratulating myself too early, but I turned and shook Chris' hand regardless. I could tell he felt like he hadn't earned the win (due to the SD) and he told me and a few others afterwards.

While it is very likely I would have won had I not SD'd, he was still playing extremely well and I did not feel like I performed poorly against him at all. Chris is good; I am proud of him.

Kage: Very true. I wasn't contesting that for a minute.

To me, when my opponent SD's it feels like a free give away though; something I personally didn't earn. What Chris said to me afterwards showed me that, in his mind, he sees it similarly. Lots of people may not feel this way, which is fine, but I think it is a strong trait of a mindset conducive to improving.

Chris: <3. Remember my taffy at the pearly gates.

Ya I can see it that way.. especially in between closer friends. But if you want to win then that's another matter I think.. Like having no mercy is pretty important in tournament otherwise.

As for SDs, shouldn't that be the first thing you learn before learning advanced techniques? Hell even basic techniques. lol. =P

josh knows how to not sd. it was one stray laser that just went wrong.

i still finished the set. in tourney, we both know how things are. clearly, i didn't run off the stage after he did, but in retrospect, we both understand that one input's laser is another input's stock cancel, and that millimeter controller difference strongly shaped that set. there is no getting around that.

I hate it when people SD. I want to beat them and get something out of it. There is a certain legitimacy to having more control of one's character and handling pressure better than the opponent, but that doesn't really help my emotion out when I hate it still lol.

I don't mind the majority of my own though, thinking back on it, but that's probably because I take care to do it very little so it's never been something worth getting worked up over for me.

I should have said "in tourney", but you know what I meant, my friend. You were as solid as could be when we played with the amount you get to play.

Also, we may have been...not sober that day. lmao

EDIT: Making me ninja edit for accuracy. loool

YEAH FFF other people being bad sometimes. :embarrass:

Had a strong feeling you felt that way too. Good to know.

And I'm working on it; it's just handling consistency/tourney nerves. I'll keep improving.

Yeah I mean there's nothing you can do about it though. What are you going to do, restart the match?
I know no one is suggesting that or anything it's just none of those things that happens so it's not really something you can do about once it happens.

I wish I had better access to people
Like good spacey players nearby

I should see if Hinryu still plays

either way, you are only as good as what happens… not what could have happened

darksyde has a decent falco... so i'm sayin this is a pretty legitimate feat here for chris to earn a game and then end up winning the set

i know now that i should certainly be afraid of one big mistake meaning the loss a set vs the darkness in tourney.. real melee **** right there

chris, what did i tell you is gonna happen if you stick with it? go ****in 'head shawty

but obviously don't expect that of viverette next time lololol..... i don't have to tell you that, though

Well taking some risks will increase your chance of SDing (IE. Mango). But.. having much control of your character will reduce your chances of SDing by a lot which means you have to know every little detail about your character. It's very important I find, because one SD = pretty hard to come back especially in tournament even if you don't let that affect you.

kage, i mean this in the nicest way possible:

go away for a few pages =/ we're discussing NC things :p

i've been on the cusp of this victory a few times. the last three sets i've had against josh now were 3rd game, where i was up 2 stocks to 1. the first was at BAC...2? the second of course was at G63 in pools. i almost had the same meltdown again lol. i was glad to finally get a victory, but there is more work to be done.

Chris: Yeeeeee, those times I felt like I was playing worse and then kinda clutched out a last stock win. This time I felt like you just played super solid the whole way through. Sorry about the SD, we'll get a better ending next time for sure.

Yay: F*** YEAH, exactly. lmao That real ****. Come and play with me, I misssssssssssss you so much.

EDIT: I definitely had to read Cam's post 3 times to be sure he wasn't just trolling in speaking well of me. That's some serious conditioning right there. loooool

it's a man rule. if someone SD's under 50%, i'm moonwalking off the stage.

i'm bad at this game now, you're better off playing twitch's scrub fox :troll:
Naaaaaawwww, Twitch's mexistache havin Fox can't hang. I'm trying to get my Falco Yay'd. :awesome:

For real though, pleeeeeeeease come and play/chill with me. That'd be so legit.

And yeah, FU Roustaneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

to quote from house:

mistakes are as serious as the results they cause

who is to say that a side b is any different than making a spacing mistake and dying to a combo?

in the end, the only true objective measure of skill or worth is in your wins
