lol. Florida had a very similar problem when I was there. Central florida never wanted to travel but hosted all the tourneys. South always traveled (and usually won). North was kinda non existent except for a small few.

I always say I want to play smash then I get offered and end up deciding against it. I must just not want to play smash like most of east.

I have come to the conclusion that it's borderline impossible to care about getting better at this game in this state. I'll probably come to stuff to chill and blow trees, and roll a few heads with ganon, but the more i try, the more everyone around here stops trying. we host like 1 tourney a month and it gets 8 entrants. It's such bull****. I'm not enough of a gamer to learn any other games, so i'll always be a smasher, but NC smash is ridiculous, and I don't really feel like going oos every time i want a decent environment for competition's sake.

so yeah. guess i'm just another NC smasher who might just be done giving a **** about getting better. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

And if the rankings ever get updated, i fully expect to be on them.
Listen to me Chris. This is not an entirely new phenomenon. I've seen it cycle like this a couple times since I've been playing. If you want to be good and you attend stuff a lot, THEN YOU CAN BE GOOD. Here's what you do:

-attend things a lot

-at every event, play people who are on your level or above as much as possible. This way you get to learn new things. All I did at any old smash event was find Ali or LoZR and play them a ton to improve my game. OOS events I played everyone to learn everything I could, and any better player I could grab would be an added bonus.

-when not at events, discuss the game in any way possible with better players or players on your level. you can innovate even while alone or you're the best in the area.

-when you play worse players than you, work on trickier movement or innovative combos. This helps you get your creativity for stuff down so you can apply your ideas you came up with more freely on better players and see what works and what doesn't. I did this and made great use of my time teaching Seven(which has many pluses on its own).

-talk to other motivated players a lot. this is different from talking to better players etc sometimes but if it's not it still needs to be said because it fuels your drive and keeps you thinking about the game, which is always helpful. You're welcome to use me for both of these things btw. =)

*shrug* i don't mind. blowin trees and still trying to focus against KP was pretty fun. playing teams with jim was amazing too. it sucks that this is all NC's competition is, but that's what it's kinda devolved into. I'm tired of pretending that NC has the potential to be competitive and active and willful again. Cause they don't lol. So i may as well join the bunch.
Maybe you should play with me a lot and let me give you advice? I actually WANT to do this because I LOVE how motivated you are and want you to realize your potential, but only if you come to me because that's how I see that you want it(also when you're not high helps because that's not really you I'm playing lol).

Giving up is silly though. You get to play a lot with Sneak and you have ways to improve your game due to your motivation. You focus on you, and the state will either take note and try to stop you or continue doing what its doing anyway. I honestly believe you getting better will help the entire state because the more talented players we have the more OOS will wanna come and the more NC players themselves will be able to learn from you. You can play a vital role in improving the state but you can't depend on every single person to do so. That's silly. Look to who I've told you to look to(especially yourself) to make YOUR improvement and stay focused! You cna become competitive with your resources Chris. I wholeheartedly believe it. If you get down or want to discuss smash or want to get a fest in charlotte(a good halfway point or somewhere else igdaf) set up, just let me know! I want you and anyone else that's motivated to ****. I want our state to ****, and the best way to do that is to take this one player at a time. If you give up then you not only hurt NC but you hurt yourself. Don't do it man.

well, that depends on how good you really want to be. to get to a level that would allow me to, say, place well at a large tournament, I'm pretty sure i have a little more caring to do before i could level off and be content and "naturally" get better.

plus, my fun in this game lies in out-thinking my opponents. really, with no competition that is active around my level, my fun has been quite spoiled.

unless that is, i wanna become good simply by having played for like 8 years. But i don't really have the time to just be that 28 year old with kids who places well because he played with PP way back in 2009.
You're getting WAY too far into this. Just focus on the here and now and what you can do to improve. That's what I did despite how I was running out of money and was so far away from everyone. I only focused on how I could improve and I went and did it. That's how you do it. That's how you win. Focus on the present. You can do it chris.

we need billfests again
stop living in the past. we need monthlies LIKE billfests with g6s coming to an end.

It's almost always like this to some extent during the summer.

It's compacted by the fact that our tournament scene is pretty unbalanced right now. Most of our players reside in the triangle, but all of our tournaments are in the west right now.
so what can we do about it?

Its tru, smashfest, tournaments, everything.. attendance is bad unless we have oos come. To be honest melee is pretty dead here, kinda ironic since the best player in the world here. Shoutout to snap for holding tournaments tho. I think I've found a venue to start hosting but there's no point with the way the turnouts been looking
we have a lot of players here, we just have to have more hype for our tourneys to get people to go! host if you can sneak, greensboro is the BEST city to host in and even when chris was hosting we had great turnouts.

I was thinking about communiting back and forth from wilmington to run biweeklies in the triangle but I honestly feel the same way chris does. NC is draining my spirit. I had to miss hickory due to family and when I saw the attendance... I was super sad.

I love melee and as of late Ive played a ton. Improved a whole lot and would like to help this scene... but I don't wana work hard if no one is going to attend those events. I gotta think about some other things too. sucks. I love melee and I don't wana see it die. Especially since now I've improved.

Would biweeklies in durham really help? or would you guys miss those.
put in the effort and see what happens before saying this state can't do anything.

I'd go to durham tournaments.

i was under the impression that nc was all hyper enthused about smash again. maybe its because i'm in the triangle and everyone here always want to play smash
you guys need to come to tourneys though! I do agree that east NC is doing just fine with smash if you don't count tourneys though.

*and not always be effed up in order to enjoy the game so you can improve sometimes*

and greensboro is stuck in limbo saying **** smash, ima go get some ***** and blow trees.
greensboro is going to everything because that city is in a **** place. stop being emo. <3

yo.....

you guys ain't east.

you are piedmont.

Sincerely,

A middle school social studies lesson from Dorsey

Not everyone is from kenny powers country(bum ****ing egypt 3 hours from TN) and refers to a place that is an hour away from the middle of the state as "East". Not to mention we have a huge coastal region, that includes much of the area south east of the triangle. So yeah, call it what you want on THE BOARDS, but a normal person that doesn't frequent THE BOARDS may be confused by your statement. That is all.

lol the scene went to **** when people started hating for me getting #1 on the bro rankings ;<

chris/slasher.. I don't think a lack of competition in the state is the primary reason for inhibiting your progress. I know NO ONE would ever take advice from me seriously because I am the token idiot forum troll from NC, the land of non-competitive trolls.......BUT.........the fact that ya'll may think that's the primary reason to blame, IMO it shows you may be focusing on the wrong things. I'm just saying that if you've already blamed it on something and labeled it as a lost cause, you're not going to be open-minded about improving / learning new things.

I also have higher expectations out of you two, being that I seem to improve kind of frequently just playing once a week drunk w/ my bro.

see, it's not the getting better i'm worried about. it's the why get better thing. If all i was worried about was getting better, then yes, i know i'm more than capable of becoming a decent player of this game. but NC smash has no hype, no attendance, and apparently loads of drama.

trust me, i still like the game. and sure, i'll still go to stuff. but 8 man tourneys where 2 of them are from VA and two of them are in the hometown doesn't say much for NC.

my progress is just fine. It just feels pointless when you have to go to pennsylvania to find a 30 man tourney during the summer. NC has enough players. they just won't drive more than a half hour to do anything.

Oh well, yeah man, true that. That's a problem with basically all older video games. I don't think it's worth dedicating that type of time to either, especially where I live. So I don't.. but I'm content with that, it's more fun.. and I still improve. But yeah, I understand now and I completely feel ya.

and **** drama

the issue isn't that people aren't willing to come to stuff, it's that people aren't hosting stuff.
with that, maybe I should host another tournament.

Everyone in and around Raleigh plays at my house frequently. I literally host all the smashfests that happen around here and I'm fine with that. I missed the Hickory tournament because it was Ali's last weekend in NC and I decided that was more important to me (I was right).

But yeah, if everybody in the triangle is playing and improving a good bit and if none of the rest of the state is doing that, there's not a lot I can do personally.

You also have to consider that people are broke. A lot of people don't have cars or jobs. Gas is really expensive so people don't want to spend what little they have on gas money/food from being out of town. The people who have jobs, if they don't work a steady 9-5 esque schedule, get scheduled on weekends because it is difficult to get whole weekends or even Saturdays off at most restaurants/retail places since those are the busiest days.

And yes, what Alex mentioned is a problem; most of the active pool of players is in the triangle. Charlotte doesn't communicate well (Peter, Ali, Travis, Forest, Dylan, Bden all in near vicinity and barely play) and Greensboro is mostly unmotivated. Why would you host a tournament in Hickory (somewhere in between those places)? DJ and Theo are gone (school), Bryan and Chris are in Wilmington (school). Adam stays busy with work and no one else from Rocky Mount plays much either.

Raleigh does need to be hosting so someone needs to step up; I already do all the Smashfests and teach and play with different people as much as I can but my job + my other interests + social upkeep all take priority before I tack on another responsibility like that.

greensboro, the "mostly unmotivated" place is the only people going to tournaments...

for as much as you guys are improving, it'd be really nice if you guys showed up to something and proved it. I haven't seen like half of this so called "triangle" since enter the dragon.

and yeah, i know people have to work. and since i drive a goddamn buick, i certainly know how much gas costs. He'd host a tournament in hickory becuase given all you "motivated" players, nobody wanted to host anything all summer. the only tournament we have scheduled right now is in...oh yeah, charlotte. If you won't host and you won't travel, then how is west NC the unmotivated ones?

Everyone who is motivated to play Smash is broke. Smash does not make generally make money appear for you to put in your car you don't have.

I have no control over what the other guys do. I'm going to host my Summer smash gathering in July; that is my contribution to unity as from all the hosting and training I do otherwise. I've seen this cycle happen several times in the last four years. This will pass too. Relax.

Also, do recall that I almost never miss tournaments before you start saying East as a whole doesn't travel. I am the best player in Raleigh currently and represent as best I can when I go. Also, why would we ever travel when the "tournaments" that get hosted have no attendance from the people from the people who live even closer than we do. The last few times I've traveled to stuff I felt like I drove there to play the people who live in the triangle and then maybe 2 or 3 others.

So weak!! I used to travel 3 hours EVERYDAY just to play the top players here so I can improve. To me when you really want something, you chase it until you die. The motivation I see right now is pathetic.

Like others have stated, I've seen this happen multiple times over the years.
