Yeah, Coheed reminds me of Rush a lot. I'm not a huge Coheed fan honestly, but they do have some good music.

Almost every Coheed song I hear, I really dig it until he starts singing.

Hey ppl, hopefully u can answer my question about System of a Down, since their kinda metal. In Chop Suey music video, i see the vocalist. then for nearly all of their other songs, i see a different vocalist, i think. Is that still Serj or did they have an old vocalist who quit or something?

Hehe, I practically grew up listening to metal. I need to back and count, but Im pretty sure I own about 40 to 50 albums, Demo Tapes, Vinyl, ect. Here are a few of my favorite bands. Its basically scattered across the Metal spectrum.

Obliveon
Napalm
Annihilator
Metal Church
Shuriken Cadaveric Entwinement
Serenade of Darkness
Sword
Edge of Sanity
Mekong Delta.
Small question to anyone who reads this, how many albums from metal bands do you guys have?

Agalloch's 'The Mantle' and Destroyer 666's Phoenix Rising are the only two albums I own physical copies of. I plan on buying all the albums I really like at some point though. As soon as I get a regular source of income again. I don't like not being able to support good bands.

OMG a metal thread hooray! now we need a good techno thread and my musical love triangle will be complete. im not pro enough in that genre to start a thread though ):

however, i am pretty knowledgeable in the metal area, although i unfortunately dont keep up with it as much as id like to.

but anyways, i would like to first begin by saying:

LUIGI AND THE MELON -

i love you both. especially you luigi cuz youre a regular in my hiphop thread,

between the buried and me, is, the most amazing metal i have ever heard, and will always be number one in the metal area of my heart. their music and the feelings they evoke in me is truly indescribable. i love each and every single one of their albums (with the exception of the cover one) equally. each album is totally different from the last, and... i just love them. i feel like im rambling now so i'll stop. but seriously.

btbam<3333333333333333

anyways, aside from the btbam, this thread needs more THE FACELESS

an autopsy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5_GzuM7ZiU

and, some old school BDM. not that their new **** isnt raw or anything.

I love how much recognition/appreciation Btbam's gotten since 2007. I remember being ridiculously obsessed with The Silent Circus, and then Alaska came out, and everyone was like "who?" or "wow these vocals are horrible".

Faceless is tight too, haven't listened to them in years!

Want some really weird, nasty, grindy, awesome stuff?

CEPHALIC CARNAGE:

"Lucid Interval" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MPBJ4EUuTA 2:12= YES

"Hybrid" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFVdSpt39OE ridiculously heavy and spacey

Or for something completely different, the most technically impressive metal group ever
NECROPHAGIST:

"Extreme Unction" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA4oq7DBU8E

"Fermented Offal Discharge" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SRD6mjrUMo&feature=related

dood hell yeah cephalic carnage!

dying will be the death of me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx7g_p0u4vM

love the video to that song too :)

Having listened to a couple Brain Drill songs, I can't agree. So much tremolo picking (tremolo picking is easy) and slow breakdowns.

Also, Muhammed is the lead vocals and the lead guitar.

And? He gives a lot of the harder riffs to the second guitarist. Remember, sweeping doesn't make it really technical straight off. Now, in no way are Necrophagist not techincal, but watch the brain drill bassist on his own. He has some incredible tapping parts, and managed to outdo the necrophagist bassist by using a 7 string bass. When it comes to it, Brain drills stuff is just plain faster and harder to play, but Epitaph is no walk in the park.

I couldn't discuss bass-wise as I'm solely a 6-string guitarist and keyboardist. I've also never seen any of Brain Drill's music/tried to play it as I have Necrophagist.

I will say that musically I'm liking Brain Drill a fair bit more than Necrophagist, so thanks!

They are metalcore technically, but BTBAM are untouchable. Every member are master musicians and they one of the most consistently technical, on-point precise bands out there. Not to mention, they have such a wide array of styles. They can play anything.

I can't believe that the first post was of my favorite band. BTBAM is the ****ing best. Colors was superior to The Great Misdirect though, imo.

In my opinion, there is no way to top Colors. The Great Misdirect is good in its own right, but it was pretty disappointing.

now, being a fan of BTBAM , and then hearing Colors when that first came out, totally blew me away. I couldn't believe how much they changed and grew after Alaska.

@ Red: I love bass, too, especially in metal where it is not just hammering out root notes and such.

I absolutely agree although I hadn't heard Alaska before I heard Colors. Finding out about BTBAM was a little strange for me, actually. My brother picked up the CD, having no idea what it was, for my father for Christmas. Before we gave it to him though I thought it would be a good idea to listen to it first to make sure it wasn't metal. Well, he was sorely disappointed, and I was plunged into deeper forms of metal :3 God they are so good though. brb putting on Colors for the 100th time at least.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't posted in here in like 2 months lol. First off, you're welcome, Jane. It's always a pleasure to spread the word of BTBAM.

Second off, has anybody ever listened to Twitch Of The Death Nerve? This band could possibly have the FUNNIEST screamer I've ever heard. It sounds more like a frog then pig squeals.

I like all metal except black metal. I find black metal too stereotypical. I really like Scar Symmetry and Dream Theater.

2 good choices :). There's a good amount of all kinds of metal in this thread, take a look, you'll prolly find something else you'd really like as well. I'd recommend BTBAM (of course, half this thread's' been about them lol), and prolly Whitechapel and Job For A Cowboy if you like deathcore.

In other news, A Hero A Fake just released a new album, and the singer really has changed. He started doing more growling now, and I gotta say it really worked out. They still have the metalcore feel, but the guitars sound much more solid and intricate. And of course, I still love that drummer, too good! Here's their first single from the new album:

Recently found a really good metalcore band called Oh, Sleeper. They only have 2 albums, but they're both worth a listen. This song got me hooked:

I like this band as well, this is the same song that got me hooked lol. I';m not a huge fan of the higher screaming on the new album tho, it gets annoying at times.

It's worth taking a look at some of the bands who experiment a bit with the genre, as I used to have the same views.

Immortal are one of the classic black metal bands. However, they are willing to do things like actually use decent production and blending in thrash elements.

Ne Obliviscaris are a favorite of mine. If you're into Dream Theater, you might like them as they are a progressive metal band, but they base a lot of the sound on black metal as opposed to the more traditional metal of Dream Theater.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J7wt2DSQXo

(listen to the whole song, as it starts as a fairly up from black metal section before moving into some more interesting sections)

That Ne Obliviscaris song reminded me. I hate that double bass sound a TON of metal bands use. It sounds so clicky and lame, it makes me think like I need to put oil in my car or something.

The clickier double bass is a necessity if you want to use fast double bass, as the whole mix gets muddied by a standard bass drum at that sort of speed. And it's black metal. Bass in "uncvlt". Well, Ne Obliviscaris actually have pretty good all around tone, but their drums do have that slightly clicky tone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WcsV7hQ1V4

EDIT

Wretched are quite good. Really clicky bass drum though. :p

Ulver's Bergtatt is a must for black metal. A lot of my favorite BM acts are avant garde. Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse" is a stellar album, along with Ulver's other two early albums, Kveldssanger and Nattens Madrigal (they moved into electronic music after that). Even those that have an obviously black metal spirit (by which I mean attuned to atmospheric and beauty, less concerned with rhythm, melody, catchiness) despite having little of the genre's trademark sound (Agalloch, Krallice, some of that odd Amesoeurs album).

And I highly, highly recommend you give Agalloch's The Mantle a try. Listen to the album in its entirety, and try to not let it fade into the background. Their music will speak for itself.

I'd put the must listens as the classic 90's black metal bands. Burzum, Immortal, Emperor, Darkthrone and Mayhem are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

Fall of Troy broke up. They have sucked for a while but Doppelganger will always be a great album.

So I picked up this awesome compilation album called Guitars That Ate My Brain. It's full of instrumental tracks by many great modern guitarists including Devin Townsend, Paul Waggoner, Kris Norris, Bumblefoot, Cristofer Malmstrom, etc. etc.

here are some of my favorite tracks

Devin Townsend "Nerd Alert" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6D1-PHcRtA

Paul Waggoner "Boot Dagger Boogie" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKa5mEyZ6Ok

Christofer Malmstrom "Hydra" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoWBla_NmbA&feature=channel

To me, Protest the Hero is like a better version of Fall of Troy, and PTH is working on a new album so it's not so bad.

edit: what exactly is metal about Wolverine? That first song sounds like a New Order song or something
