Well an RPG can only be as hard as you let it. If you're overleveled, pretty much any RPG will be a joke, unless they have some gimmick that prevents leveling from making much of a difference.

If you mean compared to other RPGs, I'd say it's too different to compare. If you play solo and don't power level, it can be very difficult. But if you know DQ tricks, power leveling isn't as tedious as it is in other games. And if you bring an overleveled friend into your game, the main story does truly become a joke.

The extensive and meaty post-game however is anything but a joke, even if you power level. Some of the bosses are downright impossible unless you build your team specifically to fight them, and even then they're crazy difficult.

tl;dr: DQ9 is NOT an easy game (unless you bring in overleveled friends, and even then only the main story will be easy). Whoever told you that is an idiot.

Oh and if you're coming to the Melee tourney, I'll pick you up around 10am on Saturday. Unless you wanted to come over Friday night.

i found dq9 to be on the easy side, this coming from a man with rpg experience. but at the same time, i did take this one slower and more carefully than i usually do.

Well so far jcaez there doesn't seem to be any general strategy to the bosses or battles, its just "my sword and healing abilities are better than yours so i win"

That's what makes DQ feel "easy" to me so far

You're still too early in the game for it to make a difference. Have you finished Alltrades yet?

I want a game that's challenging it doesn't need to be stupid hard but It needs to be harder than, kill ****, heal slash heal, defend heal defend poison, defend blind, defend zombie, defend heal, boost atack x5, counter slash 0verkill.

True, I should have plenty of time. Should be a long weekend full of DQ9
Does this mean that you'll be joining us? :)

Then you'll probably be unsatisfied with either game. If you think DQ9 is the easy path (which it is in the main game, but the post-game content is definitely has a ton of difficulty to it, and for the most part we haven't gotten to the high level grotto bosses or Legacy bosses yet. I heard Kaiser got his *** handed to him by Greygnarl though, despite being level 80ish), then Demon's Souls is definitely way too hard to be even reasonably fun.

Also CK likes that game. He also likes World of Warcraft. Using Inui logic, people who like Demon's Souls like World of Warcraft.

And people who like World of Warcraft are ******s ^_^.

good thing you're my Teru-bro and thus are immune to all forms of homosexuality by the powers of Smooth Criminals

(establishes that he's incredibly experienced in Demons's souls)
Demon Souls isn't all too difficult, it's just a game that isn't lenient. And will gladly love to screw you at every turn. I don't consider it as difficult as say...an old beat em up like river city ransom or something. lol i like Demons's souls but Wow is something I just back away from...that's OD and the definitive CK divider

Can you give me an example of an RPG you find appropriately hard? This game is certainly harder than Chrono Trigger or any Final Fantasy I've played.

what defines hard - the necessity to grind levels vs me being able to scrape by without grinding. also the general fairness of battles. in general i felt the difficulty curve leveled off kinda early on.
In the main story maybe, but that hardly counts in this game. The real game is the post game which is muuuch harder than the main story and absolutely requires tons of grinding.

The good thing about this game is that the grinding is a lot more fun and interesting than it is in most games. The class system is great and you're always learning something new and finding new equipment. I'm sure you grinded more than you give yourself credit for during the main story. I know I grinded a hell of a lot more than I've ever done in an RPG before (not that I needed all of it, but I was always pushing for some new ability or piece of equipment, and it was just plain fun).

Yeah, buffs and status effects and preparing for the right attack type are very important in DQ games. That's why Armamentalist >>> Mage, and also why Disruptive Wave is the gayest move in the game

Waffle, I've been listening to the Megas a lot lately, and I gotta say, "The Quick and the Blue" is an amaaaazing song.

The Metaknight of swords can be acquired as soon as you get the ultimate key, ~3/4 of the way into the main story. As soon as you beat the main story, they can be easily mass produced.

It's my one big gripe with this game...

Well I mean, other weapons have useful abilities and strengths, and I'd argue that axes are probably the most universally useful weapon throughout the course of the game (having a good 0 mp attack for boss fights, a great 0 mp group attack for common mobs, and one of only 2 reliable MKS grinding abilities, the other being a spear ability).

But UFBs do the most single target damage of any weapon in the game, and in the late late postgame, they're basically necessary, because it's so ridiculously hard that every bit of damage counts.

Luckily that's still in the pretty distant future for us so we can still use whatever weapon and class we want for the most part, and it's easy to switch if we need to.

Edit: Chuck, you up for BWW tonight? I didn't get my fix on Monday.

As far as challenge goes Persona 4 was good, and fun to play, but this may be due to the fact that my friend ran with under leveled people.

Does dragon quest 9 have a class that's close to an alchemy class? or a class that focuses on inflicting status affliction?

There are no real classes that focus on status. Knives and Whips do status real well though.

But don't worry, I got that.

For Alchemy, someone who can gather items efficiently serves as the best alchemist. That would be the Thief class.

But once again, Like with Hazama, Jin, and status weapons, you're too slow. I got that. :p

The Armamentalist physically resembles a typical fictional alchemist class. But only physically.

For character classes, armamentalists (and to a lesser extent, mages) focus on buffs and debuffs. For status afflictions, certain weapons have those sort of abilities naturally, and knife abilities are mostly designed for that very thing.

Like I said before, there's a much bigger emphasis on buffs and debuffs in the DQ series than there are in average RPGs. The single most debilitating enemy attack in the game doesn't even do any damage, just removes your party's buffs. It's only on the most difficult bosses because it's that hard to deal with.

So, you wanna play?
So I'm going to 2 more houses today and hoping to put a bid in on one of them as long as the inside of them aren't destroyed. This will be the 4th house I've put a bid in on, so we'll see if anything comes of it.
