Talking/Laughing during matches

I made an interesting observation at Apex. While playing a tournament match, some of the players were interesting in talking casually or laughing at something that just happened onscreen. Others remain silent the whole time, only saying "good game" at the end of the match.

I enjoy my time so much more in the former situation, and I think I also perform better. It feels so much more relaxed to be playing in a friendly environment, and I leave feeling satisfied, even if I was wrecked. I played against Amsah in second pools and had a great time even though I was destroyed 2-0. I think more people should emit a friendly aura during and between gameplay, as it makes everybody's experience better.

The only time being quiet and stern makes sense is if you do it to be a **** and intentionally mess with your opponent's head. I understand if you're focused, but you can talk or laugh between stocks and/or games.

If I know the people I play with, I always talk. This includes pretty much the whole swedish smash community.
If I don't know them, I rarely talk, during or outside of matches, because I suck at socializing.

If you're opponent is taking your match seriously, it's pretty rude to start laughing or just not taking it seriously imo.

If they're laughing or socializing, I wouldn't ignore them though. :3

I often engage the spectators whenever I'm in a match with a large audience. It adds a good atmosphere. Obviously, intentionally annoying your opponent (by methods other than gameplay) is uncool, but I see nothing wrong with being outgoing and socializing during a match.

I can't help but talk if I know them most of the times, but it depends on the person. If it's a really good player, I suppose I'll talk, cause I'm probably getting ***** anyways, and I'll laugh along. If I'm trying to win, as in REALLY trying, I don't talk. Period. I have to stay focused.

I try to laugh, talk, etc in every match I play versus anybody, local, or world-wide event. It relieves stress, builds up a rapport, and plus, I'm having a blast, and I like to express myself.

I'm usually pretty quiet because I'm just shy in general. But I always compliment people when they do something nice, and thank them when they compliment me. I also will laugh at hilarious stuff that happens in match, because that tends to happen a lot.

Thank you Based Mimi.
I always talk and laugh regardless of whether or not I know them. It's just really fun. Tournament match or otherwise, I usually talk and laugh. People who played me at Apex probably noticed. :p

My tiers of performance go something like this:
Top - dead silence
Mid - yelling at myself after dumb stuff; I probably said "I'm dumb" 10 million times during Apex, so sorry to everyone that got annoyed by it but I can't help it XD
Bottom - holding an actual conversation; especially as a Falco main, this just makes my stocks disappear and I am just like, "wait, the game's over?" *sigh*

It depends. In any environment (tourney or otherwise) I sometimes play focused where I don't talk, and at other times I play super casual where I discuss smash with the other person while playing. Personally, I can't actually talk when kicking my brain into gear...but at the same time, talking doesn't noticeably affect my performance (to me at least). If I'm focused but the other person talks, I'll wait for a time during the match where I feel free to respond. If the other person doesn't talk during a friendly, I'll say a line or two to see their response and usually it's a good indicator of how focused they prefer to be...respect your opponent's silence if they prefer it that way imo.

Talking or not, I enjoy smash all the same.

I like being able to talk and laugh during a serious set. Aside from the fact that it relieves nerves and bit and allows me to play better, I just like being reminded that this isn't a job, and I'm here to have fun. I don't try to strike conversation, though. I usually just **** around and make dumb comments/yell when throwing out moves. Good times.

Also, short story:
Back when I played Brawl, I was put up against one of the top players. We played first match, and I got destroyed. Second match, I thought it would be funny if I commentated on my own match. I did this and ended up convincingly winning the match. Then, I respected my opponents request to "shut up," then lost. I'm convinced that commentating your own match results in a 40% increase in performance, at least.

Bones, you main Falco? It's like we were destined for rivalry! Except I can never find the time or money to make it to national tournaments.

It's funny cause you said Falco was your best matchup, and Marth is my best cause it's literally all I play. I only made it out of R1 pools at Apex cause I got 3 Marths + Cactuar... lol...

during and actual tournament match I will be totally silent and simply concentrate on my match afterwards just say good game, and usually talk about points in the match that were awesome/hilarious and then go for my next match.

During friendlies I will routinely yell out phrases like "Oh you fancy!" and "Going for that swag combo!" it makes it a lot more enjoyable to be silly during the match, and yes I do feel I play better in friendlies like this, or at least i'm more comfortable playing. But it still doesn't match my concentrated self's performance.

I play much better when the atmosphere is relaxed and casual (even if the game is competitive).
I buckle under pressure.
I also can't handle my friends trying to hype me at tourneys.

In nearly every match I've ever lost you can probably pinpoint the time when somebody started talking to me or when I've started talking.

It's around the time I start losing horribly.
I love talking to people, but it makes me really bad at this game.

Jonas - No, loll. Thats just some guy from an Allstate Insurance commercial.

I can't laugh at all during any of my matches; friendly or tournament. Laughing always breaks my focus. :urg:

What I've learned through experience. If your opponent has time to talk then you've still got more room to improve or more to learn on controlling the match...of course if you're familiar with the person that changes since you're probably almost or exactly even with them. But my point stands on both sides of/all players in the match.

Still nothing wrong with laughing at your mistakes, all in the learning process.

If I had gone to APEX I'm sure my pool would have been Dr. PP, who for no explicable reason had registered three times, three times, and Dr. PP, who also registered a fourth time.

Or just four better players. Whatever. If you ever go to Texas we have to have an epic battle of history. I will likely never visit Maryland.

I like to talk during any lulls during the match... not any legitimate conversation, just a short little comment "wow I just got *****" "I've been working on that combo forever" whatever...
If I sit there in silence for a few seconds while somebody stands far away or hangs out on the respawn cloud its like... I stay in game mode, but then my mind associates being serious with doing nothing and then I'm a lot less smooth when we get back to combat. Then, when we do get back to fighting and I'm silent again, its like a shift back into concentration.

I usually laugh at silly things that happen ingame/try to socialize if I feel like it.
But I do prefer socializing with foreign players outside of playing.

I remember having a great time with the Italians before and after BEASTII, even tho I played quite a lot with them during the tournament. :)

I usually laugh / talk a lot during matches; though from time to time I'll start concentrating so much on a situation in the match, that I don't really understand what the people around me are saying. Pretty fun, I do realize they are talking, but it just doesn't convey any meaning (:

AJP has KOed me in smash due to talking XDXD
Haha, reminds me of yesterday. We were playing smash in the common room of my dormitory, someone went to fetch pizza for us. I saw her returning, and pointed out, "hey, pizza is here", right afterwards I KO'ed my opponent who completely stopped paying attention to the TV screen :D
Didn't even intend it, just noticed and pointed it out, and didn't think it was worth interrupting the match for.

Haha, we discussed how the ranking in our pool would go depending on the outcome our set, as it was rather complicated. Or it was mostly me pointing out the complicated stuff, and then suddenly Smasher found himself under the stage, unable to recover =).
Too bad I didn't use that opportunity to win the match, I kept thinking of the problem, and ended up losing the match anyway...

Me and the friend I usually play with lose way too much focus if we talk. It's like someone starts talking > loses stock right after and then reminds himself to be quiet and focus again =D

During tourney matches I'm usually dead silent unless my opponent is talkative, but I always make an effort to talk to my opponent before/after the match just to socialize.
During friendlies I'm always talking/joking/laughing if I'm not asking for advice about stuff.

I'm so used to talking during friendlies that it hardly effects my play. The only time talking makes my play worse is when its a serious conversation or I'm super tired.
