90% of the people who play Smash are broke.

I suggest we do a super good players fund. Basically try to send just the best players in the USA to Europe. if we can pay to bring people in I'm sure we could pay to get them out.

Edit: I've heard that Finland also has a surprsingly big community so I wouldn't be surprised if they could get more than those 12 people on the current interest list. Maybe compensate for all those american people we all know will flake, lol.
10 of us have booked tickets already and there are 9 people on the interest list who haven't. There are 170 registered users on the finnish melee forum, although only handful of those are active in the scene.

Also, the stalin-hitlerist antiamerican socialist system invented by satan himself is also in place in all nothern countries afaik. I get paid +550 dollars a month and my rent is 270 dollars which includes everything, even internet.
Reading Massive's post I now understand better how much harder it is to fly from America to Europe assuming one is a student (as most smashers are). Come to think of it, as I'm studying in english one third of my class are american...

170 is still sooo many if they are legit users and not bots
I remember a finnish player saying that you get like 40-50 people at your tournaments though? Isn't that true anymore? :)

Either way it sounds like you guys will have more people going than we even have in Denmark :urg: (such a small community we have, lol. But at least we're close to Sweden )

Edit: I'd probably donate a little to such a good player fund by the way. Need to find out what american top players are able to go (if they get a fund) first though.

Last national we had gathered around 40 finnish people (excluding the swedish), most of the northern players missing due to an unfortunate incident. So pretty much 40-50

Clearly we're broke, yeah its a great game, but were playing a game professionally thats 11 years, some of us love the game, some just cant afford to play something else. I hope its the first one though XD

I think we should send Canada to Europe.

Or, PPMD, HBox, Mango and KirbyKaze.

In the US, you have lower taxes, but everything also costs more (except the stuff that are higher here because of those taxes). When you're young, you have a really hard time getting by without a job, and before you finish your studies you really can't afford anything extra.
Here it's much more evened out. Pretty much everything's for free. Education (everything up to and including uni) (not only is it free, you get paid), health care... I see it as money borrowed from the future, where I start paying those big taxes.

Europeans are also more willing to spend money on travelling than Americans. Different priorities I guess.

If we actually were communists, we wouldn't be posting here right now. Ask China.

And high taxation is good anyway.

Airfare is also comparatively cheap throughout Europe.
It is very hard to find a fare to anywhere here for under $150.
For example, a flight from Kansas City to St. Louis, a very easy 3.5 hour drive, costs $148 and probably takes longer than driving with all of the Airport rigamarole.

You might be surprised to find that pretty much everything else is substantially cheaper in the US, save Internet Service and (maybe) Rent. This is averages across the country though; housing in Kansas City is less than a third of what is in Los Angeles, for example.

That socialized medicine is pretty fancy. I have good health insurance here, but I still have to pay a sum to go to the doctor and/or get any tests done. I'm willing to bet my medical expenses are still far less than what I'd pay in taxes over there though.

Well as I said, most things you pay taxes on are more expensive here.
Looking at that list, restaurants look a bit extreme, but since people can just eat at home instead, and they do, it's not a big deal.

Then we get things like cheap and fast internet (which you mentioned). I mean, 3G here is way faster than the fastest 4G I've seen in the US, and then we also have 4G, which came years before everyone else. Fiber connections are everywhere and are practically free with no caps (didn't know caps existed before I checked out what americans had).
Tap water is top tier. It's so good that even tourists can drink it, or are actually encouraged to do so, instead of buying bottled water which is likely even lower quality.

Call us socialists all you want, but there are things that everybody needs and wants that might as well be paid by taxes so that the poor (including students) also have access to them. Costs are simply transferred to other things.

I could go on but this is going very off-topic... =).
edit: I don't think Sweden is perfect, some things have unnecessarily high taxes and some allowances are just stupid, but I personally think it's better than the American system.

You Swedes should use that money you get for University and help the entire US smash community over for this tourney you're talking about.

Just sayin'

Show me one person who plays competitive Melee because he can't afford anything else and I'll sell you my left arm.

ahh the healthcare debate. All I know is our(american) healthcare is as broken as Fox on Great Bay, and not in a good way.

But back to topic, crimson brings up a good point. Some really good, but maybe not epic tourneys are planned RIGHT NOW. As a community all we can really do is SHOW UP.

I, for one, am looking forward to attending my first national this year. If you are normally a local/regional guy like me, make an effort to go to a big tourney this year. Attendance is really the only way to catch the attention of TO's and sponsors, imo.

Having a bad matchup isn't the point. Too many lower tier characters had an unwinnable matchup against metaknight. At the sametime they have bad but not hopeless matchups against other top tiers. Metaknight does invalidate characters.
Examples? If anything, DDD's matchups against DK, Mario, Luigi, Samus, and Bowser are the only thing close to an invalidating match-up in that game.

The Fox analogy doesn't sand up, since Fox isn't broken and it's debatable if he is even the best character in the game. It would be more like banning by Shiek, if she had Jigglypuff's recovery.
MK isn't broken either.

I'm sure Europe can make a fund to bring quite a few players over...also, once the precedent is set for Americans going to Europe I'm sure it will be more common (see: Japan came to Genesis 2, and then came to APEX and now Mexico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, etc joined the fray). Just make a good player fund for a few players or something. Americans did it for internationals before so no johns :)

Also please stop ****ting up my thread with Brawl talk

Metaknight vs the bottom 1/3 of the cast I think suffices as an example.

And MK may not be broken, but a character doesn't need to be broken to be unfair. MK as a character is simply too good.

such an arbitrary line to draw for him to be "too good"

MK has a +4 match-up against two characters, Ganon and Zelda.
Zelda has a -4 match-up against Olimar
Ganondorf has a -4 match-up against Falco, ICs, Olimar, and Sheik.

I don't see MK having a match-up that really invalidates a char when they weren't already invalidated by other characters. I only went through the "unwinnable" +4/-4 because -3/+3 would take too much time and I don't need to to make my point.

As far as the topic goes, look at the top left of any page on this site, then add RoM5

What's funny is everyone in Europe seems to understand why people here just can't fly over there and smash it up.

What's even funnier is how Everyone in Europe doesn't seem to understand why people here just can't fly over there and smash it up....:smirk:

All I can say is that I'd be more than happy to donate if some pros from there would like to come

Also the number of "I'd like/loved to come but" phrases in this topic is TOO DAMN HIGH
