Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Steve is one of those characters where he could just about do anything. The only limit to his moveset potential is your imagination IMO.

Even Ridley made playable, I doubt unconventional designs are a problem anymore.
if it took us years to get ridley working in smash it will take years to have steve's model look good doing anything besides walking

I didn't know Sakurai was continuously working on Ridley since Melee.

Plus, it's not like we don't have weird looking or ugly fighters, already.

Minecraft isn’t just crafting and a pickaxe. And Mario isn’t about jumping on turtles. Seriously, if Steve wouldn’t have crafting what would he have?
I’d like to see a moveset based around terrain manipulation rather than based on crafting, since, what other characters in Smash would have that? Just imagine the strategies it could bring + the kinds of interesting games one could make up with it when playing with friends.

It might be tough to get the blocks to line up since stages in Smash aren’t grid-based, but PAC-MAN’s hydrant (plus Kragg in RoA) shows that adding terrain to a stage does work.

Then again, there might be moderation-related concerns with that being used online... :/

Just did the Buzz Buzz fight.

It was over in two seconds after I one-shot him with Inking's Fair. I laughed so hard at the tiny G&W representing Buzz Buzz, lol. That was amazing!

Played 10 or so minutes of Quickplay for fun, and I gotta say, Quickplay is dumb. It threw me into two Two Stock Item matches and one of them even changed my character color for some reason. I'm honestly considering just using Arenas. Also, why on earth is the GSP you earn from single player used in an online ranking system? Just...why?

The way I picture Steve is him using the Pickaxe as the main weapon for his normals and building blocks for his specials. Other tools such as flint and steel, the axe, the hoe, Ender Pearls and so on and so forth could also be used for some of his normals as well.

His Neutral B would be used to cycle through Sand, Dirt and Cobblestone blocks. Sand blocks are the quickest to build but are affected by gravity and easy to destroy; Dirt is the balanced type; and Cobblestone is the hardest to destroy but takes considerable more time to build.

Side B would have him build two blocks in front of him in quick succession, one on top of the other, creating a wall in the middle of the stage the same height as Steve. In the case of Sand, if used in the air or on the ledge, the blocks will fall and deal damage on hit. Each block can be destroyed individually and there's a limit of 5 blocks at a time. Building a new pair will make the oldest ones disappear.

For his Up B, he'd put a block below him to act as a platform. Only one block can be put this way until he touches the stage again, however, he can still use his Side B, meaning he can use it in conjuction to build a sort of staircase back to the stage. This block is included in the same count as the ones from his Side B. Destroying the block Steve is standing on will make him enter freefall. You can still use Sand block to recover but you have to be quick about it, though you could use this as an edgeguarding tool as well.

Down B would be a TNT Block that Steve puts in front of him. This one is separate from the others and only one of it can be placed at a time. It acts much like the Dirt block in that it isn't affected by gravity and is quite quick to build. The catch here is obvious, instead of being simply destroyed, it'll begin to detonate, much like in Minecraft, it takes a few moments to explode but just wait a little and boom. During this time, it'll be affected by gravity too so it can be used to attack opponents trying to recover. Any attack with fire property will make it enter detonation mode instantly. Be careful though, this can also hit you as well.

For Steve's Final Smash, a portal to the End appears below him and sucks him and any fighters nearby, making them be attacked by the Ender Dragon in a cinematic finisher.

Steve is a blocky lego man. He'd be strange in comparison to the rest of the cast.

Game and Watch is flat but his features are still in line with the rest.

No one bothers explaining why Mr. Game & Watch can be excluded from the "wonky animations" complaint, or why Steve would be bad other than "he just would".

Being a featureless 2D character helps. Steve would be fully modelled and in SNES-tier graphics to stay on point.
I just don't think it would look good. Even in Smash Flash he'd look off.

I mainly don’t think Steve is happening because of the fact that all 3rd parties so far are Japanese created.

Not necessarily meaning Steve can’t or won’t happen, but i’m also not really a fan of the idea.

Tbh if characters like G&W and Wario can have strange movement, so can Steve. Not to mention, while not fighters, we have various assist trophies that absolutely break the aesthetics of the game, like Akira and Andross. I don't see the issue, really.

No one ever makes a good arguement against Steve other than I don’t personally want him.
I don’t have anything against Steve.

But i fear a dissapointment towards the stage he would come with.

I want it to work like Mario Maker at least.

Not until you step into DeviantArt.
I prefer questionable fan art/fics to aggressive behavior I've seen in other fandoms, tbh.

You don't need to pull the discussions to same stuff you keep repeating. Just saying. You said you don't want to be disappointed by a potential Minecraft stage already like four times this day at least.

This is weird, considering he intentionally has a weird movement, with low frame-rate in his animations.
I always saw him normal, and it seems like a good thing from what i can gather reading these posts.
2019 can’t get here early enough
Here are some of the things that i am looking for in 2019:
-Metroid Prime 4.
-CTR Nitro Fueled.
-Piranha Plant.
-K.Rool amiibo.
-Avengers Endgame.
-Captain Marvel.
-New Fantastic Four comics.
-Godzilla:King Of The Monsters.
-Mortal Kombat 11.
-Yoshi’s Crafted World.
-Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for 3DS.
-Animal Crossing for Switch.

Even Ridley made playable, I doubt unconventional designs are a problem anymore.
The comparison doesn't really work since Ridley's issue was his proportions and Sakurai's interpretation of the character, where as with Steve it's the artstyle and lack of flexibility in the character's design that people view as the issue. Ridley's inclusion doesn't just magically make everything else possible, the issues that unconventional designs bring with them always lie in the nuances, so pretty much any unconventional character will bring issues with them that the Smash team hasn't had to tackle before.

Not that it matters much in this example though, because Steve can definitely be put into the game, the things people bring up against him are nowhere near enough to actually bar his entry into the game. The character design is limited in that it can only really work one way though, so any skeptics are unlikely to be won over by his hypothetical Smash version, although I'm sure Steve fans won't (and shouldn't) care one bit about that.

Game and Watch is not limited in his movements.
In fact, he is the least limited character in the game since the 2D cartoony style allows him to do ANYTHING from the Game and Watch games.
It's not the same thing and you know it, please STOP using this argument.

I don't understand the argument that Steve can do anything, he has a game to represent, you can't do EVERYTHING in Minecraft.
There's moveset potential obviously but it's odd people keep saying this.
(And no, block building would be a disaster gameplay wise, if he's in you better hope he can't do this.)

Perfect, our plan is working...
Why do you think I'm advocating Steve?
I'm not gonna lie, I *really* like Minecraft already, but back in April the thought of Steve being in kinda repulsed me a bit. (Not that I would throw a fit if he did because I'm not 5 years old).

But as time went on and more doors were opened I became more open to it, and now I'm mostly curious as to how they'd pull it off.

I also can't take "but it's ugly" seriously

EDIT: To be clear, everyone bickering at each other right now are silly and I'm feeding off of it
