Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Link respects women, performs sexual assault on Lucina and dates Simon all in one video.
Honestly, my guess is it's an accidental weird thing as a result of Lucina's animations being so heavily based on Marth. They probably didn't feel the need to reanimate Lucina specifically for that purpose. As for Simon... I'm going to guess body proportions that would make grabbing Simon's chest weird.

Try explaining that to an SJW (pro tip: many of them are as ignorant as the racist trash they (claim to) detest).
If this conversation turns into a SJW Vs Anti-SJW nonsense, I'm done here lol. I can't stand it frankly.

Donkey Kong was an opponent in the Punch-Out!! game on Wii, after Sandman. They're both the two toughest opponents in the game. That's why that's the fight.

I don't understand how it's supposed to be racist.
I think it's the assumption that Sandman was black and there was a time where referring to a black person as an ape or a monkey was a common means of denigrating someone. It's a pretty old stereotype that I don't think the vast majority of people even really remember. Regardless it was a lot of jumping to conclusions based on assumptions that were made about sandman's ethicity.

Shi I hate to say "well the mob says otherwise" but you are literally the only person I have seen say a Persona character, let alone Joker, was obvious
That makes me feel it really wasn't
Joker has been on my DLC bingo sheet since September, lol.

The funny thing is I've heard how good Simon and Richter are yet they are the two that I've struggled to figure out how to play properly. Maybe it's just a me thing but it seems I either constantly miss their attacks or gauge distances wrong. Maybe it's just that they're too different from other characters I'm used to play lol.

You have a DLC bingo sheet?

I'd like to see that lol.

Anyways, I don't believe Joker was likely at all. In the event that we got an Atlus rep it was likely, but it was still possible that they'd go with Yu Narukami or Flynn instead. And even then an Atlus rep was far from confirmed, as it'd mean that Sega would get a third unique rep.

Well there we are, a 2nd person who felt that way. Wasn't aware of that.
Still though; he just...I don't see how he was at all obvious.
Nah, I get what Shish is saying because I've felt this way for years. The community only believes a character is obvious if the community at large thinks they're in. But the community is wrong 90% of the time. The writing was on the wall for Shin Megami, but the franchise isn't popular in this community so nobody cared. Same thing that happened with Cloud (who I defended for years before he got in) and Simon (pre-Verge, where it often felt like I was the only one who ever talked about him). This community sucks at figuring out who will be in.

Are you used to technical characters? If not, that might be it.

My brother was someone who played Mewtwo, Pikachu, and Mario primarily, all straightforward characters. He wants to main Simon, though, and struggled quite a bit with him initially because it's so unlike any character he's played with.

Whereas I picked up Richter, coming from a background with R.O.B., Samus, and Mega Man, and I learned him quickly.

The mob also called Isabelle unexpected even though all the signs were there from the start.
Atlus being a big supporter of Nintendo means they'd get a character in eventually.
From what? Persona is easily their most popular series, so that.
And who? I vouched for Yu back on base because Joker wasn't eligible(his game wasn't even released during the project plan and PQ2 was nowhere near coming to existence) but Joker became the obvious one for DLC due to being the most recent.

Given all the reactions I've seen to Joker, I don't think may people did see it coming. I was definitely caught off guard but that probably because the extensive SquareEnix character discussion had lowered by guard to other possibilities lol.

I admit to playing more characters that are more melee oriented and spacing related as I prefer wide range with a bit a wiggle room. Usually swords characters like Marth and Ike... the most technical I've played a lot of is probably Shulk.

Perhaps in retrospect, but certainly not beforehand-at least for me. I get what you're saying tho.

I wanted an SMT rep, didn't think the series was large enough to get in, glad the DLC is going for more "medium sized" games this time, makes speculation way more open.

Honestly at this point I care about what's gonna go down with Sylux and Porky more than who the Square Rep is.

He was though. Maybe not him in particular but a Persona rep was only a matter of "when?" for a long time.
Brah. Even when I suggested Joker might get in, that was on the idea of him promoting Persona 5 coming to the Switch. Of course that was met with mass doubt and I can easily understand why.

But let's be honest. The mainstream were expecting a SMT character. Not a Persona character. Kinda like how when it comes to FF, while he turned out to be the most voted for of the series protagonists, Cloud wasn't expected.

In that case, that might have something to do with it. Simon/Richter's specials are very important tools, and their strength rests in a very specific spacing due to their whip. Despite looking fairly straightforward, they're fairly unique among the cast.

My brother was playing Simon like he did his other characters a bit, which was his problem. It wasn't until he learned to start using his specials that he got the hang of things. Especially since Simon has really good specials; I'd say they're about as important as his whip. So just learn how and when to use them, and it should make a difference.

I had a similar experience with R.O.B. a while ago. I've mained him since the early days of Brawl, but it wasn't until two or three years ago that I learned how to use his gyros better. I'm still not a master with them, though. Projectile attacks aren't always very intuitive, and need to be used in specific situations to be most effective.

Black/creole here. I’m just saying...I’m not offended by it.

That’s the same to me as this:

It’s kinda funny to see but it’s just some dumb spirit battle.
This one I think they picked because of the purple shirt, Villager wasn't black in the E3 demo, so they probably forgot.

Sakurai praised Persona 5 and admitted it directly influenced the design of Smash Ultimate's UI. And Reggie basically confirmed after Joker's release what I was already suspecting: Sakurai was including himself when he said "Nintendo" picked the DLC. He simply meant they weren't taking fan requests this time. Joker is such a Sakurai pick that I'm honestly surprised so many people were this shocked by his inclusion.

I think this sudden wave of guessing every random character is misguided, given that it's really obvious why Joker was chosen, even if you disagree that it was obvious he would be chosen.

So then who do you think is the next most likely third party if you don't mind me asking?

Dragon Quest? Monster Hunter? Minecraft?

I think it's hard to gauge a Dragon Quest character based on what Sakurai has said, he's obviously a huge fan of the series but I don't think it's up to him.
It feels notable that Horii announced DQXI:S via a Sakurai blog though.

People need to stop acting like puritans about their "precious Smash not being tainted by eroge games".
Unlike what most of you seem to think, porn isn't something condemned by mature adults. A series isn't going to be seen as less just because there are canon ******* out there, ESPECIALLY in Japan where many artists, including those working at hgh-profile games, make a living out of doujinshis.

Besides, FSN's eroge content has been so disconnected from the actual franchise since its inception that current games get a T from the ESRB, so it's not like that even needs to be anywhere near the game.

"But think of the children! What if they find out about the eroge scenes through Smash!"
There are content warnings for a reason, future rereleases also completely cut out the badly-written porn and replaced them with MANA TRANSFER DRAGON. We have other M rated characters in Smash too, but no one is worried a kid will get into Persona or Metal Gear because of it.

Joker is certainly not a "you'd mever see it coming" character in the current state of third parties. What was surprising about his reveal is that there was any reveal at all.
If people who advocate censorship get up in arms, consider this factoid as well: Rule 34 exists, of characters not associated with porn in any way, shape, or form. If Saber is playable, her history in the eroge industry is no different from your typical kiddie fan who accidentally runs into furry porn and Peach hentai. Seriously, whether something is canon in a series or not, the fact remains that nothing is innocent and kids learn about this **** on their own eventually.

Orange is one of my favorite colors!

But well, these characters are all part of my life as a Video Game player
I love how there's a fun little pattern behind your list:
-2 human characters
-2 animal characters
-2 from Western developers
-2 from Eastern developers

I think it's hard to gauge a Dragon Quest character based on what Sakurai has said, he's obviously a huge fan of the series but I don't think it's up to him.
It feels notable that Horii announced DQXI:S via a Sakurai blog though.
To be fair, Nintendo provided a list of candidates for him, so he had a certain degree of freedom. According to Sakurai's tweet wording, it's implied he got to pick 5 if he thinks he can make them work.

I was already suspecting: Sakurai was including himself when he said "Nintendo" picked the DLC.
I mean, he did clarify already, the situation. Nintendo got a list and he chose from them. In regards to Persona 5's Joker getting on that list, Nintendo themselves have plenty of motives for that themselves.
Sakurai praised Persona 5 and admitted it directly influenced the design of Smash Ultimate's UI.
By that logic, Phoenix Wright wouldn't be unexpected just because Sakurai has spoken fondly of the series or that Geno is guranteed because Sakurai apparently loves the character. It's not really that simple.
think this sudden wave of guessing every random character is misguided, given that it's really obvious why Joker was chosen, even if you disagree that it was obvious he would be chosen.
Well no duh, in retrospect there motivation behind the choice might seem obvious, but that doesn't change the circumstances pre-reveal. No one really saw it coming. And Nintendo really doesn't have a reason to sugar coat things with PR so specific, unless they mean it.

I mean, honestly, it takes more to build a case on the idea that this wasn't a massive shock against the fact as Reggie describes with Joker, it was highly unanticipated, new to the Smash series and blindsided the masses on par with Cloud Strife.

No way Joker's in, you morons. Stop being stupid.
Now, let's talk about the Square Rep.
Yeah. Joker? Not gonna happen.

Now that Grinch Leak, that's a real thing if I ever saw one.
