ROB was a given, he saved the industry
Wii Fit Trainer was a given, Wii Fit was a phenomenon
Cloud was a given, Final Fantasy 7 is the best game ever.
Joker was a given, Persona in Smash was, like, gonna happen since Brawl.
Can't we just admit we don't know **** for once lol
As it should be. So far, Smash doesn't disappoint when it comes to cool surprises. Some people pick out boring character choices because they're predictable, easy, "relevant" and cash-magnets, but fail to give some of the darkhorses and improbables their limelight. Is
any character expected? Only some are, but not all.
Despite that, it's important to remember that unexpected character choices aren't mutually-exclusive with surprises. Some are unexpected because of character notions and/or the "not popular enough" argument, but once that character gets into Smash, you can justify their inclusion with reasoning. If not for Joker, a Persona rep would still be in the cards.
There are more promotional picks in Smash than there are occasional Wild Cards (inb4 Persona protagonist joke), but I feel like our most recent addition is a hybrid of the two. Joker comes from the Persona series, which is a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series. He's the most recent addition in the Persona series, and will most likely not be the last one we see.
The expectation-half of Joker's inclusion is that the Persona series is not as niche as some make it out to be. The franchise has been long-running even before Pokemon (especially if you count the novels they were based on). It's perfectly reasonable to assume we would get one at one point or another, and we kinda have Sega to partially thank for. Remember the freak-out back then? Ahaha, I was one of those people too...
Shin Megami Tensei as a whole is a very historical RPG series and its demon system is a staple of the franchise. To treat Joker's inclusion as someone entirely weird and out-there would be a
huge disservice to him, considering what he brings to the table. Nintendo saw this and decided to capitalize on it, because there is merit to the character. We need to stop treating newcomer choices as if they make no sense.
My biggest pet-peeve with this fandom is that whenever a X, Y, or Z is announced, people go overboard with their inclusions. False Equivalency abound. Examples:
"OMG, NO WAY! JOHN DOE MADE IT IN SOMEHOW! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE NOW, RULES DUN EXITS, BRING ON OMEGA TOM HANKS!"
"Ugh...I thought this was Smash, not MUGEN. I guess Goku and Spongebob are going to happen sooner or later..."
"Wow, Sakurai did it again! Master Chief, Goomba, Metroid, Octoroks, James Bond, and Kratos are locks, guys! I know this because Piranha Plant made it so that anything can happen!"
No he actually was wrong. He stated numerous times the Squenix rep would be the first pick.
He doesn't deserve to be attacked at all obviously-but he was wrong.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: There is a ton of misinformation post-launch. Verge isn't purposefully wrong about his info, because he has good reason to trust his sources. However, one of two things is happening: Assuming he's correct about the Square character, he was merely wrong about
when they would be announced.
Alternatively, it's red-herring info that was fed to his sources this time around, since DLC is a different monster altogether. Is this the Grinchleak 2: Electric Boogaloo? No, of course not. It's more to do with the fact that
no one knows the line-up and we have absolutely
nothing to go off on. Verge (and Hitagi) are likely as confused as we are.
